| really? Comcast in my area, for a package with all the channels including premiums is about $5-$6 a month cheaper than a comparable package with DirecTv plus I get Video on Demand. Satellite is really only cheaper on the lower tier "hook" packages. | |

Your argument is flawed as you are not comparing apples to apples. A much better comparison would be if you were to amortized the cost of wiring a house across the life of the infrastructure as well as cost savings by doing the upgrade. If you compare THAT number to the equivalent number from your local cable provider laying it's copper as well as it's HFC network upgrades and associated equipment from a decade ago, I bet the numbers will be a lot closer.

I've used DishNetwork for 2 years before I moved to TimeWarner cable (Austin, TX) and used their Digital Cable. DishNetwork digital TV was much better. Apparently, it is not about technology, it is what the service provider choose to do. It looks like DirectTV is cramming a few more programs on the available bandwidth...
Dish looks better but I really miss my old Voom service - looked waaay better than anything else out there. Alas, they did not get the business model right to make it profitable. Technical supriority does not always translate to successful product. Market timing is important as well. | |

| Like Satellite TV! What they are preparing you for is to be charged for every TV like Satellite TV. IPTV will need a set top box at every television just like satellite, and not only that, you may have to rewire your house with CAT5 to be able to get it everywhere you want.
There are some set tops that can control up to 3 TVs, but I don't think Verizon is looking in that direction. Thus, your $49 per month for basic turns into a $69 if you want it on 3 or 4 TVs.
Also, since everything is basically over a high speed connection, you may only be able to watch 2 TVs in your home with HD since HD takes up about 20M.
As far as apartments go, I can't wait to see what Verizon's play will be on that. That will be a wiring nightmare.

Verizon expects and HAS THE ABILITY to offer a hundred channels or more if they wanted in HD. Basically they could put every channel on HD and handle it. Right now there just isn't "enough" HD to provide a worthwhile selection over twenty. Twenty is more than most if not all cable/satellite companies in the USA. Plus the picture quality should be great since it won't be as compressed as satellite.
Basically when you bring a fiber into your home you are going to get the best tech there is today, you can't compare the capabilities to cable/satellite. Verizon will offer 2000 ON DEMAND movies per month, at least 20 HD channels (as of now) and a ton of channels at a cheap rate.

| FIOS TV .. TO early to say The fact is the jury is still out. New York is a really heavy sports area, and therefore YES/MSG/FOX/and the new METS channel. are really key in this area. Verizon hasn't dealt with Disney and ESPN, and trust me ESPN will be asking for a lot of money. HBO is not going to be an easy contract for Verizon.
Verizon has no content of its own, putting it at a disadvantage.
The Jury is still out on the FIOS TV area. Right now as it is nothing is earth shattering. Also the key is the price of set top boxes that Verizon will charge for additional sets.
I've noticed that set top box price is one of the big issues, and its starting to be a more equipment oriented business.
Getting the NFL is a big thing for verizon. However many deals are left to be made, and how there on demand is will probably be at big issue.
Verizon TV is a work in progress. I don't see in roads until 2006. Although Verizon promotes heavily early so getting in initially might be to your advantage.
Be weary of contracts though. Remember Cable doesn't sign you to a contract, and verizon does in most cases.
It looks to me like Verizon is offering Hybrid programming between Cable and Satellite. Because verizon is a new network it has some advantages.
DVR is also very interesting issue. Will you be able to skip through those commercials?? | |

As soon as it is available, I'm leaving Time Warner. My phone, cell phone, broadband and TV will all be with Verizon. Hopefully with all these products bundled I will get some break. Then to sit back and see how Time Warner responds.
