First Verizon LTE Phone: The HTC Thunderbolt
One of six LTE smartphones to be unveiled next week
by Karl Bode Thursday 30-Dec-2010 tags: business · wireless · hardware
Droid Life has managed to grab some early screenshots of what's expected to be the first smartphone that operates over Verizon's new LTE network: the HTC Thunderbolt. Looking much like the Desire HD, the device looks to be Verizon's answer to the Sprint EVO 4G. The Thunderbolt is expected to be one of six LTE-capable phones Verizon will unveil next week at CES. Actual availability of these devices isn't expected until closer to the mid-year mark of 2011.

No dual core

Looks like a pretty sweet phone, but it's presumably still using ye old snapdragon. It'll b outstripped by the Tegra 2 phones within 2-3 months.

Re: No dual core

It is the second generation Snapdragon. Smaller process (45 nm) means better battery efficiency. Same CPU performance, but a much better GPU (Adreno205).

Re: Hurry up already

I need a new phone too. I'm getting tired of my original Droid. I'm going to hold out for a dual-core though.

Will Verizon make the LTE phones available to everyone or only people in LTE areas? I'm sure they'll still charge you LTE data pricing even if you can't get LTE in your area.

Do you know how much more an LTE plan will be?

No but you can bet on it that they'll charge more and have limits on it.

ditto but this phone looks amazing. i'm up for a new phone and eris is showing it's age even with custom ROMs and froyo. i cant hold out 2-3 months and im not overly interesting in the LG tegra 2 phone which last i heard was due this month as well.

I love HTC phones and dont want a physical keyboard. this is everything i want except the tegra 2.

hearing that this has a newer snapdragon with better GPU is a nice surprise, as well.

What part of LTE will these phones use?

Will it use LTE for voice and data? Or just data, relying on the 3G network for voice?

Re: What part of LTE will these phones use?

I'm fairly sure that LTE is data only for now, phones should still use CDMA for voice for awhile while the complete the transition to LTE voice, which is a ways down the road.

My understanding is they want to move to LTE for voice because it permits simultaneous voice and data, something their CDMA network doesn't do.

Re: What part of LTE will these phones use?

If this version of LTE is anything like Sprint's Wimax (4G), you might be able to use the CDMA for voice while using the LTE for data at the same time. With my Sprint HTC EVO, I am able to use data and voice simultaneously while using WiFi or 4G, which for me is everywhere in the immediate area.

They've both been saying that for several years and haven't done it yet. With all the focus on 4G I'd be surprised if they do it now unless its really cheap to deploy.

Re: I wonder

their is no evo tax... but verizons is priced to compete aka its same price as sprint with the 10 dolars for 5gb of 4g or 10-20 more for unlimited 4g.

That's Incredible!

Meanwhile, I'll continue to enjoy MY incredible for the next 2 years..or more. I plan on sitting on the fence for LTE fones for at least 3 years or more due to the fact that LTE won't be available in my neck of the woods until 2013 at the earliest. Sprint sells their EVO4G here(93401) and I LOVE the fact that WiMax probably won't ever be offered where I live. But, gotta pay that $10 month excise tax for 4G. Frack'in joke! Not to mention, what is the battery life of a VZW 4G fone going to be? Dual-core processor? Jeeze....had to root my incredible just to access certain kernels so I can adjust the cpu to around 650MHZ to preserve battery life. Oh, well....enough of my ranting here....bring on the VZW LTE phones!
