South Florida before year's end?
(old news - 04:35PM Tuesday Jul 10 2007)
tags: Video · competition · business · telco · TVIP · AT&T
AT&T's U-Verse will be coming to Palm Beach and Broward counties in Florida by the end of the year, an AT&T rep tells the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. AT&T was the first to sign up for a statewide franchise agreement after lobbying furiously to pass TelcoTV-friendly laws -- variations of which have now passed in 21 states.

A few months back, a leaked U-Verse launch schedule was revealed that's been largely accurate, though the Ohio launch was a tiny bit behind schedule. As it stands, Florida isn't on it -- the next planned launch location for AT&T VDSL and IPTV is Oklahoma City in early August.

Ummm

Shall we have a news link each time a new city is launched? The weekly Sprint EVDO updates was out of hand there for a while.

Please... they're so far behind that its not even funny

»Uverse buildouts... expect dropped line issues with POTS.

They still don't have power to the VRAD here, and this was a city launched May 1. The neighborhood adjacent just had concrete poured yesterday for its pad for the VRAD.

Re: Ummm

Well... it did have something to do with your original post... We see weekly AT&T updates (which is somewhat overkill), especially when they are months behind on cities that have been live for months.
I agree with your original post... the next post about AT&T I'd like to see would be a completion of something.

It took time for mine to become active too. It was sitting there probably since October last year, Houston was activated on November 30, I couldn't get service until February.

Re: Ummm

I disagree. I for one can't wait for UVerse to make it's way to northwest FL. Competition is always a good thing...no matter if the medium is copper, fiber, OTA, satellite, etc.

Good luck AT&T.. Everyone in Florida who's ever even had AT&T Broadband will likely stay away from them, given their bad experiences with the AT&T name... We'll see, I guess, but I doubt the folks here will jump at it when it first comes out. They will let others try it first. I am waiting for it to come to Jacksonville, just to see peoples reactions. So far, I have heard people say their reason for switching from Bellsouth, now AT&T, is just BECAUSE AT&T took over. Thats pretty bad when you hate a name so bad you switch carriers when they take over.

how can u have 3 HD boxes with U-verse...

Actually, I have to re-word that.

How can you have 3 HD boxes FUNCTIONING at the same time with U-Verse? What is the point if you can only have 1 stream?

Blah...

I'm not suprised they're going to Palm Beach. That part of the state is just rolling in cash and folks who'll pay for it without a second look. When I can get it in Jacksonville, then I'll be impressed. Otherwise, I'm just going to call this cherrypicking.

But those are also the folks who have multiple HDTVs which U-Verse can't currently support.

shame on them for trying to recoup some of their investment. they should of rolled out this service in Appalachia first, then no one would have accused them of cherry picking....
quit whining, it would be a very poor business model to pass up the wealthier areas and serve the not so affluent places first. EVERY BUSINESS THAT WANTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL OPERATES THIS WAY!

I'm not so sure we're rolling in cash here.

UVERSE

Did you guys know that UVERSE runs on FTTP in some areas?
Did you know that UVERSE over FTTP is subject to the same limitations as the FTTN? One HD stream at a time, 6/1 internet...
over FIBER TO THE HOME.
I'm not sure what their game plan is, but why not at least offer the more robust services in the area where they CAN? Cox in OKC is preparing for the UVERSE launch next month, and the offers they're throwing out there are very competitive with UVERSE. Not to mention, Cox here is 12/1mbps with Powerboost.

When UVERSE rolls out here in Oklahoma City next month, if UVERSE over FTTP is not what it SHOULD be...I'm jumping ship. What good is fiber internet if it's no better than the freaking DSL they offer? What good is IPTV if it can't even do things that Cable/Satellite could do YEARS ago? The only thing they have going for them is price, and the cableco's are really being competitive on price in UVERSE areas.

FiOS

So when can we expect Verizon to bring us FiOS now..? With our recently passed franchise reform I was expecting all of them to break ground. While I'm all about HSI competition in FL I'll pass on big brother ATT and their crippled FTTN.

From the report:

Elsewhere in Florida, Verizon also is making moves to beef up its cable offerings. The company applied for state franchises for Sarasota, Tarpon Springs and portions of Pinellas County, adding to a cable service area that includes much of the Tampa area.

In May, Verizon announced it would invest $500 million in its fiber-optic cable network, with a goal of reaching 1.5 million Florida households by 2010.

The company, however, has no plans to serve South Florida, spokesman Bob Elek said.

Thanks.. So they're still running down the west coast.. I don't know what their problem is. If they came over to the profitable side of FL they'd simply take over. I thought the state franchise reform would help them find their way. That move makes no sense and just further upsets me.. They've been in the state for years now but don't provide service to the east coast.. Even now after the franchise reform they refuse to expand their coverage. I don't get it.

I knew that but even with a statewide franchise reform? I mean I would think they'd jump all over South Florida.

I doubt that you'll see that because Verizon would have to build all new infrastructure in places that it doesn't exist. It's one thing to upgrade current infrastructure with minimal competition (i.e. cable and satellite), but it's another total can of worms to enter into a competitive market with another telco (in addition to cable and satellite). Statewide franchise is really irrelevant in that scenario.

They areas Verizon serves in the state used to be GTE. Verizon did not enter the state to compete in those markets.

What will this mean for Comcast customers.

I hope this means that Comcast will upgrade speeds to 10/1 or 15/2.

I don't believe it!

Bellsouth was in the middle of upgrading South Florida to ADSL2+ 12Mb/24Mb when AT&T only recently told them to halt further deployment of cabinets and upgrades to existing cabinets.

From what I understand U-Verse uses different Alcatel equipment from that which bellsouth was in the middle of deploying. I find it hard to believe that AT&T will manage to now upgrade all those cabinets to their flavor of Alcatel before year end and launch it. I think its a real stretch. Well, unless AT&T thinks that a deployment is one small neighborhood in each Broward and PB.

Knowing the way they handled the $10 DSL offer and the naked DSL offer it wouldn't surprise me at all if they pulled more shenanigan's!

Why the FCC allowed this merger is beyond me. AT&T/SBC whatever you want to call them is a fairly crappy telco. They've got the worlds worst customer service and I fully expect them to ruin Bellsouth's customer service in due time. And don't even get me started on wireless, whatever the name of the month is!

No, AT&T, the Iphone will not save you in the long run. Fixing your crap wireless network would be a good start!

Can you tell I don't like them?

But I still gotta tell you something; their VoIP rocks.

Overall though, ATT is not a "favorite" company of mine ( I use the quotes as IF there is one that is my favorite ALL the time)
