Music downloads as marketing
(old news - 11:04AM Tuesday Dec 23 2003)
tags: Fileswapping · business
We've already discussed the semi-abusurdity of having carbonated sugar-manufacturers in the so far unprofitable digital music business. Now apparently 2004 will be the year of "free digital downloads" as a brand recognition mechanism. According to buymusic.com founder Scott Blum, 2004 is going to be the year of "lots of free music given out via third-party companies". "It's not going to be Apple and iTunes driving the business," says Blum to Reuters. "It's going to be companies like Pepsi and other third parties that are promoting digital music on bottle caps and on labels." Apple has apparently struck a deal to give away 100 million iTunes via Pepsi beginning Superbowl weekend. Since the big-five labels make 99% of the profit in most of these distribution models, it appears that companies are getting creative and using downloads as a form of digital advertisement.

What about RIAA

I wonder what RIAA will think of this form of advertising. The price of soda will now go up a dollar since we will have to pay royalties for the download.

even worse.....

don't you love when you go to the movies now, when you pay 10 dollars and you have to watch 5 minutes of television commercials before the previews? well how about when you download a song from a soft drink company and before you hear your song you have to listen to the company song like the Pepsi theme song.... you watch it will happen.

Re: even worse.....

Yeh, they will just bombard us with excessive ads no matter where we turn. Also, we will probably be limited to what we can get. Everyone doesn't like rap or country

What are you talking about? That and pop-punk are the only forms of music that have ever existed? Sheesh!

This is a good thing

I look at it this way. As you know the RIAA has been trying to kill streaming radio for years. Their argument has always been while music played on broadcast radio is promotional, by their twisted logic, doing so the net is not. and thus they want more then their pound of flesh out of the net broadcasters. With companies like Pepsi
recognizing the promotional value of the internet the RIAA's argument will just not hold water.

Folks we are seeing the marginalization of the RIAA. As larger players start to see the promotional value of the
Internet the RIAA will be forced into the time tested business model of broadcast radio for internet radio. While on the musical front musicians in turn with the finally recognized promotional value of the net will find they no longer need to sign their creative lives away to a big studio, but instead they can market their creations anyway they want. Let's just sit back and watch the RIAA
go down the tubes they are hated by their musical talent, and their customers.

2004, How about 1999?

We have had free music since 1999, who cares that our free music will be legitimate in 2004?

Hah, we've had free music long before '99 I remember downloading mp3's on my 14.4k modem from leeched ftp sites many many years ago.

Re: 2004, How about 1999?

If you wanna really go back, I remember being able to play 10 second music clips using POKE commands on a Commodore 64 back in the 80s.

Good deal no matter how you spin it

No matter how you spin this news, it is a good deal to get FREE LEGAL music. The consumer product companies that will offer this spend money on marketing costs anyway. If they spend some of those dollars providing free music, great.

Re: Good deal no matter how you spin it

luckily for us canadians, it is legal to download music freely anyways (at least for now). so here i come suprnova (actually as Canadian law stands now, bittorrent is still illegal for copyrighted material. fortunately, that doesn't stop too many people).
