1 edit | Actually they are a lot different, in design anyway. It is true though that when you get a sudden break in the air lines anywhere in the train, the brakes go into emergency to prevent the train rolling away. It can happen when you are hooking up brake hoses (cutting in the air) on the train too, if you open the cock (opens and closes the air into the hoses, it's closed when cars are parked on siding, yard, etc.) too quickly, it can cause the brakes to go into emergency, no damage done (well, except maybe a slightly upset engineer lol), you just have to wait for the system to reset.

There is a TON of pressure in that line too, you have to stand right when you do that, or the hose and coupling can fly up and hit your "Vital Parts"  , or worse. It's fine if you do it right, and not dangerous, it's the guys who don't pay attention who get hurt. They show you how do to it right in training. | |
