Lexus' Trial Balloon On Car Spam

I could see Lexus giving you $5,000 off on a car if you except the spam. I could see your dealership sending advertisements for service. When it comes time for a oil change a advertisement pops from a Lexus dealer telling you about the service deals they have.

It seems more and more we are being bombarded with advertisements. Products that we thought would be free from advertisements are now getting the ad label. Pretty much you can run but you can't hide.

I have a Saturn and my OnStar emails me a report once a month that, among other status, lists my current Oil Life level and warns me when it is time to do an oil change (as well as providing a link to my dealer to schedule it). I have no problems with this and I have the impression that I will get an emergency email if needed if something can not wait until the next scheduled message.

I regard this as a service not a SPAM email since it is the only use they have made of my address.

The feature you have is perfectly fine and there is nothing wrong with it. Just as long as it's a choice and not a requirement. Your feature is limited in scope compared to what Lexus has planned.

What Lexus wants to do is on the upward scale. They are going to send audio messages to your car regarding a specific subject. They say it's going to be limited and optional but it could have the potential to go much further. It would be like you getting audio messages to your telephone with potential of spam being sent.

It's a person's choice if they want this feature. Like I said, it has to be a choice and not a requirement.

considering i will never be able to afford a lexus im not to worried for myself yet. but the car is a captive enviroment which is why i can see Marketing being too tempted to go the final step and send normal spam even as simple as "you are at 1/4 tank of gas, put a tiger in your tank and turn left in three miles for an exxon". and dont think they wouldnt think of mixing spam with GPS because im sure they have.

RE: P&F: U.S. Broadband subs will decline 12% in 2009

That headline is misleading. Broadband subscribers won't shrink by 12% in 2009. The GROWTH rate will shrink by 12%. But there will still be an increase in total broadband users in 2009.

Broadband subscriber growth will decline in 2009 by 12 percent, with only 5.7 million U.S. households signing up for new service this year, according to a new forecast by Pike & Fischer.
There will still be 5.7 million additional broadband users by year end.

RE: Verizon Wireless completes Alltel purchase, will begin

»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090109/ap_···n_alltel
The buyout is expected to result in the loss of many of the best-paying positions among the 3,000 employees at Alltel's Little Rock headquarters.

Verizon picks up Alltel's 12.9 million customers, though 2.1 million of them are in territory that will be sold. Verizon will have 83.7 million total customers after the divestiture.

Little Rock, Arkansas will take a sizable unemployment hit over the next year.

This also makes Verizon Wireless the biggest wireless provider in the US.

Re: RE: Verizon Wireless completes Alltel purchase, will begin

I'm curious about this: Verizon payed $5.9B for a company w/ $22.2B in debt. Are they going to be responsible for that now that they own Alltel? It would seem so to me (unless they're going to find a way to write it off!).

They will be responsible for the debt.

Well verizon now has what 16 million new customers from Alltel. If they say only make $10 profit per month per customer, that's $2 billion a year in profit. So it won't take long to pay off that debt.

This is on top of Verizon Wireless' rather substantial existing debt as well- Verizon (the parent company) actually got hit with a credit rating cut due to this deal.

To make matters more difficult, while in the past Verizon Wireless has focused very heavily on paying off its debt, they've done this instead of paying dividends, and Vodafone has been more and more vocal about their dissatisfaction with the loss of dividend revenue. One wonders where this will end up... I would think the credit markets would make it quite difficult for VZ to think of buying out VOD's stake at the present time.

if verizon want sot buy vodafone

They will get the cash , especially if its to pay off debt OR any way that allows them to continue that process, any bank that sees a company that is into that makes them a good risk and its not like Verizon will fold LOL.

It is strange they take a lessoned credit rating for gaining market share and while yes picking up a lot of debt they strengthen for the future, just not the as the greedy say IMMEDIATE FUTURE.
Seriously if these dissenters don't realize that there investment is long term then go elsewhere for short term greed, that is what got the USA economy into trouble in 1st place.

AND ill bet that after 5 years a debt paying there dividends will start flowing very sweet. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that, and if i had the cash i'd be buying into Verizon who is looking to the future not pandering to neo conservative greedy buggers.
( and yes i have a degree in business administration with major in information systems so i have some idea wtf i am tlaking about and yes i run a IT business )
