HTC leaks big, fast smartphone - Touch Pro 3

HTC has a new smartphone that will run Windows Mobile 6.5 internally called the LEO. But will evidently be marketed as a TouchPro 3(based on the photos of the back plate) following on in their line of Touch Pros(1 & 2).

The other Touch Pros are being sold thru Verizon & Sprint. No announcement yet as to who gets this smartphone 1st.

This smartphone has a very big screen(4.3") and a fast processor(1 Ghz).

Does it have a keyboard? If so, I might just have to wait out the whole Touch Pro2 thing.

No separate keyboard - an onscreen keyboard only.

World's nastiest trojan fools AV software

Seems like all I've been doing the last week is anti-rootkit-ing and treating malware infected machines.

Wait. That IS all I've been doing. I've had more rootkits in the last week than in the previous year or two.

I'd figure there'd be some tech coverage, as everyone I've asked today has come across the drive-by download in the last 24 hours or so. Lots of infections.

One that I worked on, was especially nasty; aspects of several different worms.

Most notable was it's inclination to launch out dozens of these hooks...

Mount point destination : \Device\__max++>\^

ComboFix was only minimally helpful, at first.
Took me a while to find that Win32kDiag.exe was the primary fix for the above. After that it was downhill.

Reguarding Zeus, I had trouble finding anything other than a reprint of The Register article.

Threatexpert.com came through with some real data on the bug. It was a good read.

»blog.threatexpert.com/2009/09/ti···hty.html

Interestingly, when I tried to download their Zeus-specific utility, my system blue-screened when the zip opened.

Hmmmm. Must be that Chinese Anti-Virus I'm running.

Well, here it is for you to have fun with..........

Any takers?

My computer had a nasty trojan on it last weekend that both Spybot detected and Avira detect. They offered to fix it. But they actually didn't. Showed up in a scan the next day. I ened up having to use combofix to remove it completely. I'm usually pretty solid in avoiding places that give out virus', but i guess we can't avoid them all.

The ad rotations that are delivering this stuff seem to be everywhere.

About half of my customers get it from places like Facebook or a click off of Yahoo images. But the other half are prudes and according to their histories are getting infected off of mainstream sites.

the ad sites are the main reason , the db's that are rotating those ads are getting compromised , the ad farms need to really stay ahead and try and head this off at the pass.

MS Exc: Vista in "less good product"

No Shit Sherlock Homes. Another example of how Microsoft only cares about consumers money not consumer satisfaction. Microsoft forced consumers to buy a "less good product" by withdrawing XP Home and sticking them with Vista, while IT Managers gave Microsoft the finger and continued to install Windows XP professional.

When given the choice, most IT Managers said, "what a wonderful idea, because Vista is such a resource hog, implement Vista and get to throw away most of you PCs". Big business had the power to tell Microsoft where to go while consumers wound up stuck with debugging a new less good Microsoft operating system.

If Windows 7 is as unreliable as XP and Vista was, when released, it should be shipped in a suppository. The sad part is that as soon as a Microsoft operating system is mature and reliable, Microsoft replaces it with a new unreliable operating system.

Re: MS Exc: Vista in "less good product"

I think MS did too good of a job with XP. It was pretty good to start (we'll overlook the nimda hole), and got pretty close to perfect by SP2.

Too many things changed in Vista are change for the sake of change. Win7 is a refined Vista, but it's still not something people NEED. Win7 should have been an inexpensive upgrade from Vista and is a slap in the face to people who bought Vista with the expectation that MS would refine it like they did XP.

If all of Vista's problems could be summed up in one sentence, that'd be it.

Here's a short list of Vista 'improvements'.

I can no longer drag shortcuts or files into a command window.

The advanced file search features are hidden, until after a search is completed. Why?

Right-clicking on most (My) Computer Icons now gives me nothing. I used to get a context menu with all sorts of useful stuff.

Most of my Explorer menu and other options are gone or shuttled off to other places less convenient.

But hey. I get a sidebar now. It's just more trouble than it's worth to transform into something useful.

And if I just removed the engine from my van, I'd get terrific gas mileage.

Just out of curiosity, which one of those things I mentioned brought me meaningfully increased protection from drive-by rootkit insertions?

Re: MS Exc: Vista in "less good product"

None, but your 'improvements' were highly biased to begin with. At the very least you could mention real improvements if you wanted, like added security, better memory management, and save the whining for windows 7.

Which if you old enough to remember, every time an OS comes out from Microsoft, people whine that it sucks until they get used to it... This has happened for every major OS I remember... And I used a commodore 64 at 4-5 years old (now 30).

Windows 7 is about to be released. I'm not sure why you guys are whining about Vista and still spreading FUD about Vista when it's time to do it for 7...

Here now. Let's just try this again. This time I'll use small words and diagrams.

djrobx offered

To which I replied
said by Noah Vail:

Here's a short list of Vista 'improvements'.
and then I listed some stuff.

With me so far? Good!

The topic is that too many things in Vista changed for no appreciable reason. I called those things 'problems'.

Neither djrobx nor I were trading remarks on security,
or fud,
or Windows 7,
or Wazoo (whatever country that's in).

We were simply discussing changes that resulted in reduced functionality in the OS without bringing any understandable benefit.

See?

So the reason our conversation didn't satisfy your requirements on the security aspects of Vista,
is because we weren't having a discussion on the security aspects of Vista.

There. I'm sure you're as gratified as I that we could get this little matter all cleared up.

Cheers!

Which IT managers gave Vista the finger? The ones in business with pentium 2's, or the ones in businesses with pentium 3s?

I love hearing bullshit arguments from people like you. You obviously have never stepped into the antique business world of computers, and seen the lovely pentium 3's with lcds.

The business world also gave the finger to windows xp too, and have only now switched from windows 2000 to xp. I guess xp is bad too, since it took 7 years to catch on?

A) if it's MY art then I have a right to charge you for it. If you ever develop the ability to create something you'll finally get that.

B) So movie studios are supposed to spend $150 mil making a movie the "share" it with the world for FREE? They're supposed to go bankrupt proving you with free entertainment? Where is the incentive to make more movies, music, TV shows etc? Do YOU work for free?

Re: word is in RIAA is trying to brainwash people

if its art you should not charge for it as since the dawn of mankind HUMANS have shared art and science and knowledge

are you saying that you wish to control knowledge and science and art and culture, buy way of making me pay fo rthe extension of human evolution and culture?

If so you sir are a sad case for a human being and i highly suggest you go BUY a copy of carl sagans "COSMOS"

and watch the last two episodes very very closely.
I want you to look up "maps of 1513" on Google and find out about a map made from "other ancient sources" that showed the antarctic free of ice to a precision that was not available technologically until 1958. Look up longitudes.

I want you to know of the library of Alexandria where the opposite of copyright was used to make many wonderful advancements, that because of religion and doctrine such as yours were burnt and NOT rediscovered for almost 1100 more years.

Tnaks to control of knowledge aka copyright were are fast entering another dark age of mankind and if you and your kind do not see that sharing is and of it self the best reward, then you are no worse then the Spanish whom destroyed the Aztec culture or the people that burnt the Alexandrian library. Like linux at first the new movies and music might not be full of grand quality but almost all of the special effects Hollywood can do I SIR CAN DO....given more time. IF your rational were true then Linux would not exist.

Perhaps it is time for the equivalent of open source movies and music to begin in a true form.

What does 50 year copyright do for the citizens of today but make for laziness. What do I or any artist truly need a distribution house for music and art. When we have the internet at our finger tips , charge what you can get , for ye shall get no more.

---------------
btw if you start out with the thought that money = prime motive for your art it cannot be called art, it is thusly called a product and if you can't sell it then it is worth nothing.
----------------
here is an example of the future of advertising as an example of open sourcing your ads to get more people to advertise similarly for example.

I could charge my guests for the air they breath while they're in my house but that's not practical. Since no one can control optics or sound waves DRM is fundamentally not enforceable. It doesn't mean you can't try -- it just means the people who get it for free are going to do it anyway. Why hurt your legitimate customers who want to give you money in the process?

B) So movie studios are supposed to spend $150 mil making a movie the "share" it with the world for FREE?
They'll have to adapt. Big budget movies still turn huge profits even with piracy factored in. We're mostly talking about theoretical profit being lost but that doesn't factor in the number of people who will download the content for free but would not otherwise pay for it. That's exactly why, despite huge piracy numbers, the US film industry isn't going bankrupt. Consumers won't change their habits until they see some real impact on the quality and quantity of media being produced. In the music industry there has been an explosion of content due to cheap production and easy promotion -- again despite piracy. The film industry will have to figure out how to work this new model or other people will develop extreme-low budget / shockingly high quality films and undercut them. We're already starting to see it with original online video. If it takes a few guys $4k to make a pretty good little short there's no reason it should take Hollywood $40M to produce a mediocre generic summer comedy. This movement is still in its infancy but I think we could all agree we've seen random $0 YouTube videos that were pretty entertaining. It's where things are heading for better or worse.

Piracy IMO is a correction to an industry that was out of control.

yes you can ask for 1 billion for you music, but as i and others have said culture is priceless and to that extent i would argue that your attempt at monetizing civilization to bankruptcy is not going to advance mankind. Let me put it this way, lets say tomorrow aliens land on earth are you gonna charge them for your tunes? HOW would they feel about us as a race for such practices of culture and knowledge.....

and as aposter above said with open source tools and some patience and a bit a skill i can do a ton of the high end special affects so whats the big dal with that 150 million $ movie when the 30,000 spent on the blair witch project made them a huge box office take.

entertainment, the only industry that can get away with never adapting and still survive. not asking for free media but when i see them do things like restrict what hardware we can view Hulu on for example i know they are dumb as a post because one would think when you have a legal method for people you would expand it not limit it.

Re: word is in RIAA is trying to brainwash people

When will the RIAA, ASCAP or the Girl Scouts and/or Boy Scouts of America sue the Value Voters for using Irving Berlin's music, God Bless America, without receiving permission from his estate or paying for the use of the music? Irving wrote it to celebrate how proud he was to be an American. If he were alive today he would not be to happy. What most people do not know is that all royalties for the use of that song and words go to the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. When are the Value Voters going to pay up and if they don't, when are the copyright control agencies going to take legal action for copyright infringement?

dont forget if you have a store/shop of some kind better just play the local broadcast radio. or you will have to pay Muzak for service or get sued by ASCAP for the high crime of playing a legally purchased CD in public.

Re: word is in RIAA is trying to brainwash people

The copyright control agency, shakedowns have been in use long before internet access was widespread. Under the copyright rules the only way a business can play a radio, without violating copyright law, is through the radio's own speaker.

If a business connects a tuner to their public address system for background music they must obtain a license (Usually for about $25.00 Per Year) from the station they are rebroadcasting.

If a business is discovered to be rebroadcasting music through their public address system or music on hold feature of their telephone system the copyright cops will send them a demand letter. The letter is similar to the ones sent to persons downloading unlicensed music via the internet. Most businesses would simply pay the fee and write it off. Unfortunately ordinary citizens cannot write off such settlements.
