Senate Commerce Chairman Introduces Bill To Apply Universal

Sorry Senator, now that our USF is funding free cell phone service for poor people lazy asses in addition to lining telco coffers, there isn't any money left. And I'd rather not pay more into an already broken idea.

I still don't understand USF. Who exactly is it helping? I want names, places, articles etc... How come such a great thing is not made famous on who exactly it's helping?
I just know my phone bills have it because phone companies don't want to really contribute so they pass it own to us.

It is supposed to fund telephone/data services for schools
And it is supposed to provide free cell phones and service to poor people.

The free cell service is the only thing we've seen any proof of.

     POTS service pretty much is ubiquitous, although in highly rural areas, that's often all that is available.

     Schools, I'm not so sure about.  While schools do tend to have fast Internet a lot of the time, I always thought that was financed through the school district's budget.  I don't know how much in USF funds the school districts get, if any.

Wait a min weren't the schools suppose to get wired with fast internet from when Clinton was president. That was a big joke too because I had someone tell me that yea they (meaning Verizon) was told to wire the schools but there was no provision in the funding to connect it to the actual internet.

i currently pay $30/mo for my POTS line. out of that, $10 goes to FED, State, County GOVTs. wooping 50% taxation on a stupid phone line.

My last landline was setup on the "metered rate service" plan, meaning I got the dial tone and incoming calls for free, but paid extra for even local calls. (which I never made) The "service" was $5.13, but after taxes and fees the bill came to $15 and change. Do that math.

I was told It wasn't available where I live(Yermo, CA), I had at one time had 6MB/768K(No Fire happened, But then It was not any faster than 3M/768K to Me), later 3M/768K(times are hard) and then the person said that's impossible. I'm pretty happy most of the time with the 1M/384K service I get now($21.99), Outside of the 2 times this month alone where I've lost either phone service and/or DSL, One day Dial Tone went and drowned Itself(rain) and shortly thereafter DSL went too, They fixed It, This morning I lost DSL for about 4 hours, Both days were a Friday(Lovely), I've learned to check My Netgear WPN824 v3 router and the Westell 7500 modem first and I know what to look for, As the 7500 will tell Me If DSL is down or up at a glance, Lovely, Wouldn't trade the 7500 unless I had to. As I can sometimes get an IP address, But no way can I get anything but lookup errors and It doesn't matter If the WPN824 is there or not either, weird.

Hopefully not the way MSN Music redefined it: "It's all yours until such time as we choose to discontinue the service, leaving you without the music you paid for and with no compensation or way to recover it."

I think you can do that now using Audacity. I can record from linein without connecting a wire from the speaker jack to the mic jack. It seems to be internal, capturing the stream before it's converted to analog.

The result sounds as good to me as the original iTunes song. If there's a loss of quality, I don't hear it.

Even if the stream was recorded poorly Audacity has plenty of tools to clean up the audio quality back to near original quality.

What if fo some reason someones net goes down, what if they cant get internet for that month, due to finances. What if the company goes under, what if the company and the idividual have a billing dispute. They lose that money they paid and lose the files.

they are dumb for relying on one form of backup. its ludicrous to ever only backup to one source and say its "backed up".

i have use dropbox.com and a flash drive to backup all my data. and my entire computer is backed up to an external hard drive. if i had any data that was really worth backing up that I could not get duplicated i would store it at the county recorders office. but thats just me.

cloud computing is for a certain type of person. its not for everyone. if you don't want to do it then don't. simple as that.

Pushing some stuff to the cloud does make sense, it's only truly dumb when users don't know the risks- unreliable or offline access, hosting companies that may not be around long term, security, etc.

If users can live with and have the same expectations for cloud access as webmail, then it should largely be a positive experience.

I think the real problem is that it's being pushed as The Next Big Thing. "Do everything with cloud computing! It's safe and Super Effective!" Nobody who's invested in its success is being honest and up-front about its limitations and risks, and those of us who are aren't being heard very well.

50 is a lot. Remember that Android is the Operating System, not the actual phone. So the fact that they estimate that there will be 50 different phones running the android O/S in 2010, that's a lot of phones.

A Mozilla official last week pointed Firefox users to the extension that adds Microsoft's Bing search engine to the list of the browser's search engines after Google's CEO downplayed consumers' privacy concerns.

During the interview, Schmidt was asked: "People are treating Google like their most trusted friend...should they be?" It was Schmidt's answer that motivated Dotzler to show users how to drop Google, Firefox's default search engine, for rival Bing.

"If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place," Schmidt told CNBC.

Dotzler fumed over Schmidt's comments on privacy. "That was Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, telling you exactly what he thinks about your privacy," said Dotzler on his blog. "There is no ambiguity, no 'out of context' here." Dotzler added that he considers Bing's privacy policy better than Google's.

Google is working on a hot new fancy HTC Android phone to debut on T-Mobile next year. But it will be unsubsidized and sell for full price.

Google plans to sell its new phone without getting a wireless carrier to subsidize the handset. But that doesn’t mean it won’t work with a carrier: The search giant intends to launch its phone next year with the help of T-Mobile, say sources familiar with its plans.

Google (GOOG) has approached multiple carriers about supporting its new phone, which it has designed itself and will be produced by Taiwan’s HTC, sources say. But so far only T-Mobile has agreed to actively help push the phone via distribution channels and support infrastructure, I’m told.

But sources say Google’s decision to use GSM came only after Verizon Wireless (VZ), which uses the rival CDMA technology, declined to help Google push the new phone.

Google doesn’t intend to sell its new “Nexus One” phone that way, sources familiar with the company’s plans say. Instead, it envisions a scenario where customers who buy the handset are provided with a menu that lets them pick a carrier, menu-style.
