One Question Microsoft

Will full retail version of windows you have the ability to transfer the license to another computer. I believe in recycling my copies of windows as I go to a new system. So will you allow me to transfer the license to a different computer?

Re: One Question Microsoft

I'm going to guess that they'll allow you to deactivate the old copy of Windows and re-activate on a new PC.

That, or they won't allow it flat-out, hoping that they'll have Win9 out by the time you want a new machine.

Keeping with the MS cycle it's best to wait until Windows 9 before upgrading.

hahaha "deactivate the old copy"... that doesn't happen. While they DO ask that silly question "how many computers is this product activated on" and everyone ALWAYS says "1..." that question was about as good as when the airlines would ask "did you pack your own bag?"

The automated system will recognize a key that's been activated too many times, or too many times too quickly and will route you to an operator.. or now even the system will just ask you to enter the number on the phone. However, there does come a point where microsoft will simply DEACTIVATE YOU.

Even as a Microsoft Certified Solutions Partner (Gold) here, they've deactivated some of my keys for activating them too many times. they love to play games with their agreements. While it clearly says in writing that you have 10 CALS, they will argue that they say it's 10 activations, in certain licensing. They NEVER unblocked my keys, rather, they had to reissue me new keys.

Re: One Question Microsoft

Actually, they CAN'T. by design once marked invalid, it stays invalid. Replacement is the only choice that system allows.

Re: One Question Microsoft

Can't unblock a key.
The system was design so once a key was marked as bad, it was permanently marked as bad, forcing the user to call in and request a replacement.
The idea was to prevent some "master reactivation key" being leaked or hacked, and forced a direct one to one request for replacement each time.
It was easy to track patterns of who repeatedly requested replacement keys.

I don't believe I said they unblocked a key. I do believe that I stated that I had to have keys re-issued. So I'm not sure why you replied to my post the way you did

I have transferred the license to another computer. You may have call the special number. You just give the new number then they will ask how many computers have been used with the cd key. I just said one. You just input the letters in as they say the letter. Takes about 5 minutes.

That doesn't "transfer" the key.. That's just the activation process. If it were to actually "transfer" the key, you wouldn't be able to remain "genuine" and you'd be blocked from updates, and the software would go into reduced mode. Eventually they will stop the "how many computers" game and just refuse to activate you any more.

When you buy an upgrade (as opposed to a full retail) version, the license in effect is for the prior version that the update requires/updates. If the update comes with its own serial number and license it voids the prior version's serial number and license. IOW: If I have Version X, I can transfer the license (and I am no longer allowed to run that Version X copy). Once I use Version X to install a Version X+1 upgrade, I am no longer allowed to transfer my Version X license. If the upgrade does not delete Version X as part of its install while you can still run Version X, it is a gray area if you are still licensed to do so (unless the Version X+1 Upgrade License explicitly voids the X license).

I do normally try to reuse windows even if I rebuild a PC with new parts. figure no need to rebuy the whole OS when the computer it was on before is parts in a box now.

Do Telcos Need More Tax Dollars to Fund Broadband?

I just love the comment under the article by some misguided soul:

First of all, USF is not a tax: it does not raise revenue for the government. It's a cross-subsidy: it supports connecting high-cost subscribers by a charge to low cost subscribers.
So now we are going to mince words about whether it's a fee, a tax, a penalty, a subsidy...this sound a bit like what the definition of the word "is", is. (For those that don't remember, Google Bill Clinton definition of the word is.)

If a government entity takes money from you, it's a tax. I think the SCOTUS recently confirmed that everything can be viewed as a tax.

The government taxes gas so it can give money to non-government companies that build highways. What's the friggin' difference between charging a USF or CAF fee on your phone to give to non-government companies that build a different kind of highway?

I must admit, I do look a it differently than tax or fee, I view it as corporate welfare.

Well said! I pay it and I live in one of those rural areas. Basically I pay the TAX for my high cost obsolete copper phone line.

It is a tax, regardless of how it is collected or redistributed or what label you place on it. It was licensed and mandated by the government, and you can't maintain service without paying it.

The trouble is, we're all debating "how much" of this tax is appropriate, instead of examining whether it was a good idea to begin with, and maybe, should be retired.

Why don't we return that $7 billion annual to the consumer, and let the individual decide how to spend it, rather than having politicians play Santa with other people's money?

Windows 8, offer...

... I wonder if they'd offer to just not force this tragedy into market. I mean, I don't mind they release it because it means a while before they put Windows 7 into EOL.. but Windows 8 may be great for a tablet, but on a PC it's a joke.

The $39.99 price also reminds me of their pricing model for Windows ME.

Sounds to me that MS isn't confident the market will receive Win8... and further, it's not going to see adoption into the corporate world where they make a huge chunk of money.

They should have just launched a tablet edition of Windows, like Windows 8T or something. But for the masses on a PC.. good luck. It reminds me of an apple OS concept, and to this day there's a reason why most users still use Windows.

Bad move MS

Re: Windows 8, offer...

hahaha.. funny. Ummm yea,.. Having 'Microsoft Certified Solutions Provider (Gold Status)' I'm sure I haven't tried it.. and this hater just is just another hater. Further... you seem to think that M/S put so much time and effort into this just to not care if people like it or not. You do realize that when M/S releases this joke of an O/S (which by the way, most people in the industry believe it's a joke already) and then a real operating system such as 7 is EOL, then yea, ... just don't use it.

At a price point of just $39.99, I'm sure M/S is also just as confident in this pile of dung they call an O/S.

I'm going to go on record and make yet another prediction, which like most of my other calls, which will come to light. M/S is either going to spin out of this and launch a different version of Windows 8 "for business" which will encompass the old desktop, or they're going to quickly offer packs or enhancements to mod the current version. The metro design isn't going to cut it.

because haters keep hating on it and haven't tried it or are Apple/Linux fanbois. The VAST majority of those that have given it a FAIR shot like it. Of course 1/4 of all idiots out there or even more think XP is just fine and dandy so their onion means squat.

Dude.. it's not a popularity competition.. an I don't think you're illustrious survey or study to find that "the VAST majority of those.." statement was a very scientific one. You are what most people out here like to call a "sheeple".. you clearly just like to go with what ever is shoved down your throat, and you should like it just because it's up next. I also find people who use terms like "fanboi" (by the way, look up the word boi and see if you still feel good about using it) themselves are just, how do I say this.. morons at best and really offer nothing valuable to the conversation anyway.

Your facts are non-factual and pulled out of thin air. And your take on it is trivial and contained in your own mind, at best. Do you have any REAL hands on experience or data to back up your opinion?

Fanboi? I've used several operating systems, many from Microsoft. I had no issues with Windows XP or 7. I did have several issues with Vista and 8. If you're familiar with a more "tablet"-style interface then Windows 8 would be for you. If you enjoy your desktop and laptops (like me), then Windows 7 is awesome.

As for the Windows XP is fine and dandy, it depends on the task at hand. If you're just doing basic email, web searching, and running Office.. Windows XP is just fine.

..and yes, I've been running Windows since 3.11 on an old 286 with 4MB of RAM. I've been running FreeBSD for 14 years, and Linux for 7 years.

Oh, and for the "haters" part, that definitely tells me your age range (teen or early 20's).

Proofread before you spout off.

(for the record, I've used everything from windows 3.0 up, OS/2, various macs, linux, sun, BSD, irix, MS and PC DOS... I'm not a "fanboi" of any OS, but I've noticed that every other version of Windows since windows95 has sucked... )

I disagree. The only good versions of Windows was 95 (rev C), 98SE, XP, and 7. The only ones that absolutely sucked was Windows Me and Vista. Windows 8 is TBD.

Ahh.. I missed the actual 98FE. Ya, that one had issues.

..although there are levels. I think Windows Me was the biggest disaster of an OS I've ever seen.
