Ready to give Windows 8 a spin.

Guess I'll be a fairly early adopter this time. Traditionally I usually wait awhile for various Windows flavors to see how it goes, but I think this new Windows 8 concept is such a radical change I am actually interested in just digging on in.

Re: Ready to give Windows 8 a spin.

I have Mac with OS X Mountain Lion. I have had mac for 3 years and I don't think I will switch back. I have Windows 7 on Oracle VirtualBox but it runs so slow compared to dual camp conf which I got rid off because it was taking too much space and I did not want to reboot machine each time I need to lunch windows apps.

Re: Ready to give Windows 8 a spin.

did u comprehend my part of writing "compared to dual camp" - I meant it ran faster on dual boot configuration with apple drivers. It could be Oracle VB doesn't take much advantage of hardware optimization and there are better products out there. Its free open source. And its probably not as big focus for Oracle like SQL or Java.

Re: Ready to give Windows 8 a spin.

My experience is that you want to run just about any MS OS under Sun VB you have to run it on hardware that's got a lot of balls and a lot of memory and then you have to do a lot of tweaking. Linux seems to run on VB under just about any config. I tried to run a few Win 7 boxes on some sun servers and the we always a little sluggish. I recreated the same Win 7 hosts on VMware esxi hosts and they run just fine.

Re: Ready to give Windows 8 a spin.

I've got a Win7 VM on my MacBook Pro with 2 GB RAM and a single proc allocated running under VirtualBox. Once it boots (that can take several minutes), everything seems to run fine...at least better than my crappy HP work laptop. I don't really have any complaints. I also have zero desire to "upgrade" to Win8.

Buy Parallels. I have parallels 8 for my macs and windows apps pretty much run as fast as if I was bootcamping..

I've had the release preview running as my daily OS on my laptop. While I still am not completely fond of the Metro interface, if Microsoft would at least allow the classic 7 start menu functionality on top of Metro, I' be much happier about it. But I am not totally against it and can see some bonus functionality even on non-touch devices once software developers start to take advantage of it. But that will be the key part, IMHO, to determine whether it takes off or not. Getting developers on board to write apps for it.

A couple of things I really love about 8 though are some in-the-backgroun (so to speak) tweaks and improvements. Namely the cut/copy/paste dialog improvements, the new task manager, the sleekness of the new desktop UI, and boot/shutdown speed improvements. Still the same hardware with an SSD as the boot drive and 8 is substantially faster than 7 in this regard. And 7 is no slouch either. And the lock screen is a beauty and a nice advancement over previous versions of Windows.

You know they've had beta versions out for almost 8 months now. I've been using it since early March. It's different but one you learn your way around it's actually easier to use despite what the haters say. Considering one can upgrade for only $40 why not? If someone is not sure they can either install it on another HDD or another partition on their HDD.

Why can't they update windows without renaming and moving everything around?

You're not obligated to upgrade to windows 8. There are still people using XP. Seriously Windows 8 isn't as bad as the haters say. Of course many of them are actually Apple and Linux fanbois.

Re: Ready to give Windows 8 a spin.

I didn't care much for Vista but adopted Windows 7 early. I like 7 and will likely like 8 but damn it there is no need to move and rename shit. Personally it's not a problem but I get sick of getting calls from "friends" who every time they get a new computer because they don't know how to do something.

You need to do what I did. I still use XP both at home and at work. I tell anyone who asks me for help with Windows 7 or higher that I don't use I and cannot help them.

I wasn't a big fan of windows 8. tried it pretty early on. I'm not against paradigm shifts, but microsoft needs to put a bit more work into the OS in order for it to succeed. It feels like they are trying to force metro down everyone's throats. They have no gameplan. They are willing to sacrifice OS marketshare for tablet/smartphone marketshare. I ran it for several months, but gave up a couple days ago. It just didn't work or me. I went back to Windows 7.

Not me, Windows 7 isn't broken. Neither was XP for that matter. Change for change's sake isn't a feature.

Talk about delusional...

Comments from a c-neter The iPhone 5 has a revolutionary feature called 4G LTE. It makes the internet lightning-fast. Android users wish they could surf the web as easily and as quickly as the iPhone 5 could.

The iPhone 5 also has a beautiful and amazing feature called dual-core processor. It makes the phone run much faster overall than what an Android would be capable of. Android is still stuck on old technology while Apple is already showing us the future of mobile technology

Nah, they could just release it in black, and claim the white version is delayed.

It's Richmond CALIFORNIA!

Was there a big earthquake that shifted it to Virginia? revcb needs only look at the source: nbcbayarea.com. The closest open water to Richmond, VA is the Tidewater Area, not Bay Area.

iPhone 5 traffic volume already surpasses Samsung's Galaxy S

How is this determined since iOS6 runs on everything since the 3G-S? Does the browser user agent report the OS build number? That's the only way I could see them telling one iOS handset model from another.

Not only that but what sites are they getting traffic from? I find it very hard to believe that 5 million iphone 5s are using more traffic then 20+ milion s3s, unless these advertisements are for mac sites..

This news article was not very clear, only saying the more traffic from advertisements is going thru the iphone 5. No mention of what that traffic is, what sites, etc.

Re: iPhone 5 traffic volume already surpasses Samsung's Galaxy S

They did 5 million iPhones the first 3 days. Apple is still showing 3-4 weeks for shipment meaning they're selling them as fast as they can make them.

iPhone has always been a web hog in terms of traffic share. Back in July Netmarketshare reported that iOS was 65% of traffic and Android 20% of traffic despite the higher combined number of all the android handsets out there.
