Intel results show Post-PC era is really starting to happen

""Windows 8 and new designs did not provide the hoped and awaited boost..."

No sh*t sherlock. Have you seen Windows 8 in use in an enterprise environment? It is miserable.

Re: Intel results show Post-PC era is really starting to happen

I tried to test Windows 8 for at least a month but I couldn't stand it for an hour and re-imaged back to Windows 7. The UI is such a clusterfuck..

The biggest of many mistakes made with Windows 8 was to try and migrate the server products to a touchscreen interface. It would seem nobody involved with product planning has visited a server farm recently.

No kidding, the $40 Window 8 pseudo-Pro upgrade was the ONLY reason anyone bothered trying it. MS' only hope is to take Windows 7 completely off the market and force people to Window 8 through attrition.

I just gone done with a process documentation project for a Win7 migration at a Travelers insurance for 10,000 end users, now I am working for Cigna healthcare as a regular network tech but they are ramping up for the same migration along with outlook and office 2010. And from seeing this I am hoping win7 will become the replacement for XP so the end of life date will be a long time away so I don't have to upgrade all my friggin computers in 3 years because no corporation wanted to adopt the OS. But from what I have been seeing over the last year all the big Corporations now are running around like a chicken with there heads cutoff playing catch up but what else is new.

Isnt one big corporate issue is that lots of corps have things requiring IE6 on their Intranet apps? And Win7 does not have IE6.

It depends on the apps the lines of business need to run, but from what I see shimming the program right now is the band aide and or VM to keep it running.

Microsoft hikes Windows 8 prices, now starting at $119

I am still having trouble convincing people who recently bought Windows 7 Home machines that it might be worth $15 to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro.
But I'm sure they will be glad to pay $119 for the home version.

If they miss out on a deal then that's on them. Even for $40 it's deal. I just have both on seprate a partitions. So if I ever wanted to use Winods 7 I still can.

Actually, the Windows 8 desktop OS is perfectly fine as an OS. It is just the start UI, and user's opinions of it, that is killing sales.

Gigabyte broadband in every state?

What a farce! Install it in the largest city in every state. Bingo. He can now pretend he was successful. Guess what? There is just a little problem with this Ponzi scheme. 150,000.000 rural Americans will think 25 is supersonic speed, but the reality is . Most of us will feel exceptionally well connected with 15 as long as we don't read Karl's ISP News everyday.

Every state can already get gigabit broadband. It's just going to cost you....

Re: Gigabyte broadband in every state?

But "Gigabyte" broadband would be *Awesome!* (At least the FCC now has a new catch-phrase in "gigabit broadband" which, I guess, is better than the old "yes, 3000/768 is broadband" ...right?)

Let's buy everyone a Bugatti Veyron but leave the speed limit on the interstate at 70Mph!

SOPA will return via the side roads

last year they tried to drive it down the freeway in a double set of 53' trailers.

This year they will sneak in the back roads in vans.

basically the little bills, the ones they know will get passed. And the politically important bills like aid for Sandy.

bit by bit parts of SOPA will come in the back doors and back roads on the backs of bills that are political suicide to vote down.

After all sneaking shit in is how lots of bad stuff gets passed in Congress.

FCC Julius Genachoski wants all 50 states to have gigabit.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachoski is missing the point of Google Gigabit. You have to have relatively AFFORDABLE residential and business Gigabit service for a very large geographic area and a large enough population that utilizes it to create viable Gigabit communities that create significant changes in how that community interacts with each other. That is one of the problems with the Gigabit plan of the city of Chicago, Illinois, USA. It is to be centered on a special business district that engages in R&D. The rest of the city will be getting almost the same much lower data transfer rates they have today. So the application developers will not have a true community in which to test their concepts. Just other businesses inside the special geographic area. So Illinois will be able to declare a Gigabit "community" without having to really create one.

A better idea would be to create a truly competitive market for ISP services that goes beyond the duopoly of 1 cable ISP and 1 DSL ISP that many have to live with even in large cities. That might create affordable charges for the top speeds of today which would be significantly influential in driving application development. Getting the average cable ISP user to affordable 100Mbps down and 10Mbps up before 2015 might be a better goal. The technology already exists. Almost all the physical plant is in place for every cable ISP to move to that level of service. Even the older DOCSIS 3.0 4 channel bonding modems that are in use should be capable of delivering that level of service. But again the key is affordability. A coworker is cutting out cable television and keeping the HSI, but staying at the $53/month Cox Preferred 18/2 instead of upgrading to the $65/month Premier 36/5. He laughed when I suggested he might need to upgrade to the $100/month Ultimate 50/5 package now that all his video viewing will be internet based. I think his wife will convince him after several months to at least upgrade to Premier. That will still be less than 50% of his cable bill today.

Making the existing top cable speeds much more affordable would be of great benefit to a larger population of application developers in the next few years. The new applications could be put to use quicker than ones that depend on multitasking several applications using a Gigabit internet connection.

Re: FCC Julius Genachoski wants all 50 states to have gigabit.

Cable ISPs can do better. But they probably never will unless their competitors decide to do something. Being as most of them compete with DSL, the cable ISPs have little to worry about.

Great, so when do the movie studios and DOJ get throttled to 256kbps given they were all caught pirating content?
