Too bad this isn't really an option, I wouldn't mind having a smartphone plan that *only* charged per MB (I could turn off the cellular data connection) and then use Wi-Fi for most of my data needs. -- "Net Neutrality" zealots - the people you can thank for your capped Internet service.

Available to people? Yes. Mandatory? No. Free Wifi is everywhere.

| Re: Wi-Fi Won't Squeeze Carriers, Ever Free wifi is not everywhere. The point of a smartphone is that it has an omnipresent data connection, regardless of if you happen to be near a wifi hotspot. This whole free wifi everywhere thing is a wonderful, warm, fuzzy idea in concept, but it has no connection to reality. Reality is mostly 3G/4G with occasional wifi offloading. | |

| Re: Wi-Fi Won't Squeeze Carriers, Ever It basically is in every halfway civilized place nationwide. With AT&T, I can drive through tiny towns and highly exurban areas and maintain a fantastic fake 4G connection. If anything, because of congestion they are worse in the cities. However, wifi would be even more scarce out in the boonies. | |
