I suspect only 100 or 200 meg of data on their servers is actually legal.

I suspect only 100 or 200 meg of data on their servers is actually legal. There is much more than your claimed 200Meg of legal data on Megaupload.
As to backing up on DVDs, I am sure that there are multiple tape backups of all 25 petabytes already. Normal procedure for running a Server Farm is to take daily (or more frequent) backups. The problem is that if they pull the servers now (or purge the data off of the drives) it would be a major effort to restore it. Right now the data is static so there is now more updating of the drives or any purging of the content. Thus the simplest thing to do is just leave it there until the case is settled. As to paying for the hosting site to keep it there, the Federal Storm Troopers have impounded the assets of Megaupload. They can thus just take some of the impounded funds to use to pay to the Hosting site (those funds would have been paid to them anyway if the site had not been seized so this is not a misuse of the funds).
IMO: The site should be put back online in Read-Only Sign-On mode so users can get access to their files by logging in and reading their files. This mode would block any attempt to delete or replace files while preserving evidence of their content/existence while allowing the owners of the data to retrieve/recover it (if you do not prove ownership of that copy by logging in you will not have access). There are lots of collaterally damaged users whose data is being held due to claims that some of the other content is held for ransom by the Government and Media Mafia.

But they can't use any funds until MegaUpload is founding guilty. That will take years. Even after they, they need to hold the funds until MU has exhausted the appeals process.
They can't put it in read only mode as this defeats the whole purpose of charging MU... because they were making illegal data available! The govt is not about to do the same thing!

Please reread my suggestion. If activated in Read-Only Sign-On mode, ONLY the account owner can access the data to read it (or are you assuming that the logon info will be widely distributed to allow the supposed pirated content to again be distributed?). Thus is there no distribution of the content to anyone-else. This handles the returning of non-pirated data to the account holder in lieu of the illegal embargoing or proposed destruction that that Government is proposing.
As to the use of the funds to pay for the hosting, MegaUpload would have used the funds to pay for the hosting if it had not been confiscated so there is no issue with preserving it (to be returned to them if they win the case). The net amount of money would still be the same since any funds used to pay for hosting would have been spent anyway.

So I'll have access to the pirated Windows 7 OS I uploaded to MegaUpload and my reclaiming my pirated software will be allowed by the same organization that took MegaUpload down for this same reason?
