Along the same lines, I'd love to work four, ten hour days instead of five, eight hour days.

Change the School Year

In Central and South Florida, the school year should end on Oct 31 and begin after the start of the new year.

When it's a billion degrees outside, some kids would rather be in the air conditioning; truancy may decrease.

Teachers would get time off when the tourist season would make more jobs available.

Families would be on vacation during the holidays when travel is more desirable.

Having an operational year same as the calendar year might be cheaper to maintain.

We already have hundreds of school districts on year round and other modified schedules so the differing district schedules is proven not to be a problem.

Planned Google medical records svc raises privacy concerns

»news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080228/tc_···lth_dc_5

Google Inc has unveiled a plan to help U.S. patients gain control of their medical records and is working with doctors' groups, pharmacies and labs to help them securely share sensitive health data.

The company's long-rumored entry into the highly sensitive field came when Chief Executive Eric Schmidt introduced Google Health at a health-care conference in Florida on Thursday.

Google's biggest rival, Microsoft Corp, has introduced HealthVault, which gives users control over who sees what. Among start-ups active in the field are Revolution Health, a company backed by former AOL Chairman Steve Case.

While medical providers are covered by U.S. privacy laws, there is little in the way of established privacy, security and data usage standards for electronic personal health records.

Google is prepared to resist fishing expeditions by lawyers seeking to subpoena personal medical records stored on Google Health. Last year, it went to court to defeat an effort by the U.S. Justice Department to request some Google search records.

Some privacy advocates were quick to criticize the effort. Howard Simon, executive director of the Florida American Civil Liberties Union, said storing medical records with consumer Web services raises data breach risks. "A breach of security would be catastrophic," Simon said. "It's very, very troublesome."
Given all the hackers out there, concerns over personal medical info out on the internet are legitimate. And until court cases determine how easy or hard it is to get that info subpoenaed, there are concerns there as well.

That does not make me feel secure.

Since no one can guarantee me that a security breach is impossible, I wouldn't rush to put my medical history online.

That being said, load up your favorite P2P application, and search for "health records" and I'm sure someone has unknowingly shared some health information in their My Documents folder.

That probably can be said about a P2P search for "Tax" related items as well. It's crazy what some people share (ie, their 'while' HDDs).

Try searches like "Bank info" and "Passwords" and "PIN Numbers" and so on and be amazed. And shocked.

Well at least Steve Case has experience that is relevant. Once you are diagnosed with something your online profile could notify you immediately - a-la:
"You've Got Leprosy"
or
"You've Got Herpes"
or You've got Renal Failure"
Just like the great job he did running AOL....

Fabricated Concern

If we hadn't been told for 7 straight years (without taking a breath) that we need to be terrified for our medical records,
would we even care?

Visit a bingo parlor or a public bus stop enough times, you'll get to know dozens of people's medical histories without even asking.

To jump through the HIPAA hoops is costing billions. What is the damage that HIPAA has saved me from?

I really don't have a concern that one day I might be one of the dozens who had an individual steal a peek at my medical history.

Government and Corporations are the only things that one day might cause me genuine harm from browsing my private records. These measures don't do a thing to slow them down.

The only people stopped by privacy laws are you and I. The same people who cause us real grief in our lives aren't hampered at all.

I think medical records are already highly regulated, mostly due to the HIPAA law that took effect 7-8 years ago. It was intended to standardize forms used by providers and insurers, and encourage electronic processing. Due to concerns over how electronic processing might be abused, privacy requirements were added to the law.

Without knowing what Google is planning to do, it may not be too much different than what WebMD began doing after HIPAA. They became a service provider of automated processing.

Re: Planned Google medical records svc raises privacy concerns

The privacy laws, there are plenty of exceptions, all your insurance companies, their administrator contractors, networks operators (PPO networks, etc), and processing contractors have 100% access to your records. Then drug makers have access to your records to see if you became sick, research firms (commercial and educational) get anonymized access to your records. All the govt agencies (DEA/FDA) get to look at your records to see if you've getting too much Vicodin. Any prosecutor can pull your records to have a wichhunt to find something negative to tell a jury, even if the case isn't about your medical care.

The only privacy you have is I can't pay $25 and get your records online.

Robot dog may be as good a companion as real dog

»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080229/ap_···neliness
A study by Saint Louis University found that a lovable pooch named Sparky and a robotic dog, AIBO, were about equally effective at relieving the loneliness of nursing home residents and fostering attachments.

The study, which appears in the March issue of the Journal of The American Medical Directors Association, builds on previous findings by the researchers that frequent dog visits decreased loneliness of nursing home residents.

And with a robotic dog, you won't have to feed it or clean up after it.

More Americans turning to Web for news

»news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080229/wr_···ews_dc_1

Nearly 70 percent of Americans believe traditional journalism is out of touch, and nearly half are turning to the Internet to get their news, according to a new survey.

While most people think journalism is important to the quality of life, 64 percent are dissatisfied with the quality of journalism in their communities, a We Media/Zogby Interactive online poll showed.

Nearly half of the 1,979 people who responded to the survey said their primary source of news and information is the Internet, up from 40 percent just a year ago. Less than one third use television to get their news, while 11 percent turn to radio and 10 percent to newspapers.

But Finberg said the study does support the belief among many large media companies that focusing on local issues is important to their journalistic and economic survival.
While much of the news on the internet comes from traditional sources like newspapers, TV, radio, and wire services, the delivery mechanism has thrown the traditional news outlets in to an advertising tailspin. They have to cut deals to get reimbursed for their costs. And that explains all the noise over copyright infringement. And why you see both lawsuits and out of court settlements and deals with Google and others to reimburse them.

I agree. I use Google Reader. Subscribe to about 8 RSS news feeds on various subjects and get almost all my news that way. I only watch news on the TV if it something really live and breaking like when that student was shooting up college students in Virginia.

UK News Site Gives Matt Drudges Street Address to Terrorists

At least that's what they tried to do.
Instead, they publish the address of the internet marketing company who handles advertising on the Drudge Report.

The UK Inquirer is attacking Matt Drudge for revealing Prince Harry was actively engaged in Afghanistan.

Here's a link to another site who covered the Prince Harry story, dated almost two months earlier.
»64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:VT···=8&gl=uk
There are still other sites who ran this story last month as well.

The Inquirer says their intent is to make Matt Drudge available to Terrorists.
Except that the street address they printed, isn't Matt Drudges at all.
It's the address of InterMarkets.Net, the ad company who handles advertising on his site.

Below is the release kit for advertising on Drudge's site.
I imagine it's where they pulled his address.

The Inquirer's actions don't expose Drudge at all.

But maybe if the Inquirer's wish comes true,
and terrorists brutalize the people
who supply services to Matt Drudge,
it'll serve as that pound of flesh they're looking for.

Drudge was wrong for printing the story and endangering Prince Harry and his combat team. And the Inquirer is wrong for trying to sic terrorists on Drudge.

Just goes to show that both groups have no conscience or class. But what can you expect from journalists - most are scum of the earth and would sell their mothers on the street corner if it got them a story.

You make those two things sound equal.

The Inquirer's stated goal was to expose Matt Drudge to Terrorists, thereby intentionally putting his life in jeopardy.

Matt Drudge's stated goal was to (one more time) reprint a story that had been circulating for nearly two months.

Given the security that would have been necessary for his deployment, he was pretty well protected; even if at a distance. Everybody sophisticated enough to have a chance to hurt Prince Harry, figured out he was deployed by mid-January.

Since governments are kept in check by news outlets, they'll jump at this chance to restrengthen their control and plant seeds of ill feelings toward the Press.

Not to mention it was Drudge who broke Newsweek's self-imposed moratorium on anti-Clinton stories and dethroned the he-Queen of the Liberal British Press; Bill Clinton.

The Liberal British Press has never forgiven Drudge for that.

Mercedes-Benz coming out with 2 hybrids starting 2009

Mercedes-Benz is claiming a major breakthrough in automotive battery development, announcing it will use lithium-ion technology in its upcoming S400 BlueHybrid that will go on sale in Europe in mid-2009. S400 BlueHybrid, powered by a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine in combination with an electric motor mounted within the gearbox casing, will deliver a combined 299 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque, good for 0-to-62 mph in 7.3 seconds. More impressive, however, is its estimated fuel economy of 29.7 mpg and low emission rating.

S300 Bluetec Hybrid that will combine a 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged, four-cylinder diesel engine with an electric motor. The powertrain will produce 221 hp, 413 lb-ft of torque and a whopping 43.6 mpg, Mercedes says.

lithium-ion technology has ... concern over its longevity and extensive heat build up in large applications, such as those required for modern-day passenger cars...Mercedes-Benz claims to have overcome these problems by integrating the lithium-ion batteries directly into the cooling system of the car to allow them to operate at an optimum temperature of between 59 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
If MB has actually solved the heat issue with lithium ion batteries, that will also allow them to be used as plug-in hybrids, where the batteries can be charged from a 110 wall socket and run for miles without the regular engine at all.

Re: Mercedes-Benz coming out with 2 hybrids starting 2009

I'm still trying to figure out why the heck you need all that horsepower to get up to 55/65/70 mph on the freeway.

My weak 4cyl vehicles take a little longer to get there, but I still get there. Maybe I don't get the rush, but still....

Just imagine the mileage they could get out of half that. 43.6mpg is impressive, but those who can't afford a car like that can get a small Honda and do better than that also.

I'd honestly be impressed with less power and more fuel mileage. But I guess if you can afford a Mercedes, gas prices or diesel prices are probably the least of your concerns in the first place.

You don't need all that horsepower, but the auto companies have been brainwashing everyone for so long that more horsepower is the same as more sex, that most buyers believe it is needed.

They also have been selling the BIGGER is better(safer) mantra to the soccer moms, so that most of them feel they need a 6000 lb SUV to drive 1 or 2 children to practice.

The question is what will they start pushing as they have to reach 35 MPG regulations from the EPA by 2020. The MPG goes up about 1 MPG every year starting 2011.

Interesting link.

To the best of my knowledge they are. Lots of awesome cars in there, ground to ceiling windows, even some cars outside.

Parked next to a $180,000 Maseratti yesterday. Gotta love it. That one looks to be the cheapest thing they sell there. Must be nice.

Nothing is funnier than pictures of animals pursuing human endeavors. Try putting a hat on a cat or dress your dog in clothes. Hilarious! And when it's a slow beer week, post pictures of animals with beer. Hilarious!

Comp USA Last Two Days

Not much left I might be doing some Vulture Capitalism but I thing all the Ebay newbies beat me to it often at a way to high of a price. Ebay newbies tend to buy high and sell low.
The big question is to buy Vista Home premium or not. I am leaning to it if it goes to %70 off. There were plenty of disk list week. The other item is Norton but they were keeping to price above Ebay selling price.

Re: Comp USA Last Two Days

My CompUSA is picked pretty clean. I tried to buy their track lighting from the home theater section but someone beat me to it

I did score some nice "home theater" style chairs for 60% off tho. And a powerful CoolerMaster 850 PS for $95, marked down from $250.

Monday!

Last Monday of the week, thank goodness now I can put to bed those 12-14hr days that never end. The upside, kicking the roosters off the perch at 4:30am ~Pay backs a bitch.

Now, if I could just convince the neighbours dog to SHUT UP, between the hours of 10PM and 4AM!

Vista 64

I was watching TV with the windows media center, open up IE, and it takes 40 sec! to open a web page. Normally it's .5 sec ... normal with WMC open it takes 40. I have to use the AverTV program to watch (which isn't as good, but doesnt dog my comp) TV if I want to surf the web.

Re: Air Force Buying French Tanker

The entire DoD has been using products that are definatly not American made at all for a very long time now. Only now do you get upset?

Half of my gear that your tax dollars are paying for has been made in Mexico. The only thing that is purely US made that I have been issued is my M16A2. Of course, it in reality was made over 25 years ago, so that doesnt even really count.
