Sweden could force Internet firms to name file sharers

More and more countries are jumping on the bandwagon. I hope the US passes a law forcing ISPs to boot users who pirate copyrighted music, movies and TV shows. Sweden is joining the UK, France and others in trying to rein in the thieves.

Re: Sweden could force Internet firms to name file sharers

Sounds like a good idea on face value, but ISP shouldn't have to be the internet police. That's like asking the road builder and maintainers to find the speeders. Piracy IS a problem, but ISP acting as "the police" shouldn't be the solution.

Re: Sweden could force Internet firms to name file sharers

I guess (using Sweden's thinking) if you get a virus it's the ISPs responsibility or if your kids see any porn it's the ISPs fault???

ISPs better fight this or they'll be opening themselves too lots of lawsuits.

Why do you try to turn every Friday Open Thread into a political piracy debate? Maybe you should post that stuff in »Current Affairs/Politics or »Filesharing Software.

It's the Friday thread; we should be talking about food, beer, sex, cars, and rock & roll! Yeah, baby, yeah!

Thanks. I keep dreaming the US joins the rest of the world where ISPs police the internet crooks.

Add Japan to the ranks of countries cracking down on illegal file sharing over the Internet. The Yomiuri Shimbun is reporting that the country's four Internet providers agreed to disconnect Internet connections "of users found to repeatedly use Winny and other file-sharing programs to illegally copy gaming software and music."

Can't say that this comes as a shock. The reaction against illegal file sharing, which began in the United States, has spread to Europe, and now, Asia. Chalk it up to a super-effective lobbying effort by well-organized copyright interests representing software companies, music labels, and the film industry.

Crime pays?

I've been thinking about the state of organized crime in this country, and it seems obvious to me that the last thing such criminals would want is the legalization of their "products". I mean, if the govt. started simply taxing and licensing all of those things that are "crimes" (yet still desirable to huge portions of the populace because they don't involve anyone being forced to do anything against their will with their own property), then all of that money would start going to the public coffers instead of those unnumbered bank accounts outside the U.S.; taxes could be lowered a little or a lot (?). And it makes me wonder... how much have they contributed to legislators and other such questionable groups in "lobbying" efforts to keep certain activities illegal that, perhaps, a majority of citizens would be just as happy with if they were legalized (fill in your favorite vice here)? Wow... that could mean the end of "organized crime"--what a concept!

And remember... no matter who you are or where you live, there are those who would happily toss you in jail for at least one of the things that you believe in fervently whether you actually express it or not. Everyone is a member of one or another minority group no matter how much you might see yourself as otherwise. There are even those who would do worse than simply toss you in jail... and some of them work for the govt.

i like your thinking, but it's too out there for this country. imagine legalizing prostitution or most of the lesser illegal drugs. "think of the children" screams would destroy your ears. religious folk would claim the end times are near.

I don't think you quite understand what organized crime is all about. It's more about business in general than illegal products. I think even if cocaine and heroin were legal in this country, organized crime would still thrive.

Meh37

@verizon.net

Re: Crime pays?

I don't think you quite understand that you've just contradicted yourself. It's not a crime to do business; if it were legal, then it wouldn't be a crime. The point--one of them--is that businesses pay money to the govt (taxes, fees, etc.) and "organized crime" doesn't (well, except for the bribes, which don't actually go to "the govt"). We're talking billions of dollars here. Taxpayers, however, are paying billions that are being used to prevent other citizens from simply trying to exert control over their own property (one's own money, one's own body, one's own life).

As morbo said, though, neocons will never understand that they do not have the God-given right to decide how someone else may use their own free will to live their life.

It's not the business they do that's illegal, it's the extortion, racketeering, and murder that accompanies it.

TiVo and YouTube to Deliver Web Video to TV

TiVo, the maker of popular digital video recorders, announced a partnership with YouTube that will deliver Web video directly to users' televisions.

With the YouTube deal, TiVo becomes the latest entrant into the marketplace for porting Internet video content to television. Apple introduced a new version of Apple TV with similar features in January. Although several companies are trying to merge the online viewing experience with the living-room big screen, no one product dominates the market yet.

The company's Series 3 and HD set-top boxes will support YouTube connectivity; earlier versions of the hardware did not support online video playback.

Sometime later this year — the company did not specify the date — a category for YouTube videos will be added to the TiVo interface. Users will be able to log into their accounts and gain access to playlists on the video sharing site directly from their televisions. The company also plans to enable users to subscribe to video feeds from across the Internet by using a software program called an R.S.S. reader.
Looks like a deal that could bring Tivo so more sales of their hardware boxes. And it also gets YouTube on to the TV easier.

Dam. I thought for sure Kate was going to wrestle a Commie Bear (not I) at the end. I'm betting she'd win..

Was also surprised no Hockey fights broke out during the whole 3 mins. Though that could be why the lights are turned down, calms down the players.

Good reminder. I've got to go visit some relatives deep in the heart of NJ Devils territory tomorrow. I'll be sure to wear my Flyers stuff.

A bit depressing, though. I remember her doing that live. Results were great. It's just that it was 30 years ago.

Hulu reviews coming in

»blogs.wsj.com/buzzwatch/2008/03/···news_wsj

Wednesday may be remembered as the day that the Big Media finally began to understand the Internet. The occasion was the official launch of Hulu, the new broadband video site created by the partnership of NBC and News Corp.

That's not to say that Hulu will ever supplant YouTube. On the contrary, I suspect that they will ultimately develop an interesting symbiotic relationship with each other, with YouTube being the home of the homemade, the obscure and the populist, with Hulu (or another site like it) aggregating the professional-grade productions from movie and television studios.

Needless to say, Hulu also has a very different business structure from YouTube. It is not a "free" site, like YouTube. Nor does it operate like iTunes in which you have to purchase content. No, Hulu is going the Third Way, the one the television world knows best: commercials.

So, the question is: Is Hulu any good? Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal, the leading arbiter on all products and services electronic, gave Hulu the kind of thumbs up he usually reserves only for Apple products.

Les Moonvies of CBS hinted that his network might try the same thing -- or perhaps even sign on to Hulu. Either would be a good idea for the Depends Network, but to my mind the smart move would be to join Hulu and keep pumping it up with content. This is not a time to compete with Hulu, but rather to turn it into an ersatz common carrier.

And ABC? Well, now we're talking about the Mouse. And Disney is in bed with Apple, so to speak. But that doesn't mean that ABC/Disney content couldn't be on both sites -- isn't that what multiplatform selling is all about -- and give users the choice between ownership-without-ads and viewership-with-commercials.
I tried out Hulu and I like it. It is very easy to use. The shows are good quality video. And if they sign a few more deals for more content, they could capture a large number of users..

I double plus agree. The video quality is really good for a free streaming service. I watched the big lebowski last night, and when you select the 480p higher res option on the movies it's pretty decent. Will be great when they start offering the movies in 720p streaming.

Ditto. Fancast is also pulling some hulu content as well as from other places (such as wherever the Star Trek shows come from), but hulu looks "smoother".

It is not just Hulu, I been using CBS and Fox's web page to watch shows. To me if this takes of it will make the argument for A La Cart TV moot.

"I mean who doesn't like Bruce Springsteen?"

quote:
A woman stabbed her de facto husband to death after he stopped her listening to her favourite Bruce Springsteen CD.

Karen Lee Cooper told arresting police she was sick and tired of Kevin Lee Watson telling her what to do during their two years of living together.

``I couldn't even play Bruce Springsteen on my stereo _ can you believe that, can you believe that?`` Cooper told police.

She repeated her claims in a formal police interview when she said: ``I mean who doesn't like Bruce Springsteen? I am 49 years old and I want to play my own music.``
