A distributed denial-of-service attack on Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty this week is the latest attack in a resurgence of hacktivism (hacking + activism) in the Internet underground, a security researcher says.

The attack knocked out or interrupted eight RFL/RL sites, starting with Belarus and including Kosovo, Russia, and Azerbaijan, according to the news agency's Web site.

At one point the Web sites were getting up to 50,000 fake hits per second from other machines.

Several weeks ago CNN's site was a target of hackers believed to be based in China, sites in France have been targeted, and a year ago Estonian sites were attacked, notes Paul Ferguson, an advanced threat researcher at Trend Micro who wrote about the trend this week.

"These things are generally grass-roots driven, either regional, cultural or national," and unlike most cybercrime attacks, they are not motivated by financial gain, he told CNET News.com.

Because the attacks are designed to limit the flow of information, they have more of a societal impact than other cyberattacks, Ferguson says. "I anticipate we'll see more of these over the summer, driven by geo-political issues" like Tibetan protests during the Olympics being hosted in China, he predicts.

The Chinese government is requiring U.S.-owned hotels to install Internet filters to "monitor and restrict information coming in and out of China," Brownback said Thursday. "This is an insult to the spirit of the games and an affront to American businesses," he said. "I call on China to immediately rescind this demand."

Same here. Wife had it 2 weeks ago now I've got it.
At least the weather is conducive to being sick - I hate it when it is really warm out and I'm not feeling well.
This way I get to light a fire, sit in front of it and enjoy the warmth on my face and the smell of the embers......

Would be nice if I had a fireplace, though....

Yup - I was not sick all year but a few days ago I felt that "surprise" in the back of my throat. That twinge that makes you realize that by tomorrow your throat is going to feel like you swallowed a box of imported glass shards.
Luckily my friend is a Pharmacist....

And I do have a fireplace but would not light it now cause I would not tolerate the smoke either.

$1.12 billion last year to phone companies operating in rural areas. In 2001, the fund paid out only $15 million. The increase in funding has led to higher taxes on phone bills for consumers.
