| 2 new terms to hate: hactivism & hactivists
»www.news.com/8301-10784_3-993374···1_3-0-20
A distributed denial-of-service attack on Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty this week is the latest attack in a resurgence of hacktivism (hacking + activism) in the Internet underground, a security researcher says.
The attack knocked out or interrupted eight RFL/RL sites, starting with Belarus and including Kosovo, Russia, and Azerbaijan, according to the news agency's Web site.
At one point the Web sites were getting up to 50,000 fake hits per second from other machines.
Several weeks ago CNN's site was a target of hackers believed to be based in China, sites in France have been targeted, and a year ago Estonian sites were attacked, notes Paul Ferguson, an advanced threat researcher at Trend Micro who wrote about the trend this week.
"These things are generally grass-roots driven, either regional, cultural or national," and unlike most cybercrime attacks, they are not motivated by financial gain, he told CNET News.com.
Because the attacks are designed to limit the flow of information, they have more of a societal impact than other cyberattacks, Ferguson says. "I anticipate we'll see more of these over the summer, driven by geo-political issues" like Tibetan protests during the Olympics being hosted in China, he predicts. Makes you wonder if the Ddos attacks on Dslreports were political based & instituted by hactivists or if it was a run of the mill shakedown for money. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. | Ugh, please let's not call it hactivism, it's the stupidest term I have heard yet.
What ever the case my be, cyber crime is on the rise, and this is no surprise as the IP protocols starts infiltrating everything up to the toaster. DDOS attacks are easy to create and controlling botnets simply take it up a level.
As the tools to cause a DDOS become more available and easier to use more and more people become part of this form of attack. Although the damage is not physical it's still intentional and does do a form of damage. No matter how many laws or stiff penalties are placed on cyber crimes such as these, they will continue to rise because they are easy and they are effective.
I wouldn't mind blocking all incoming traffic though from all peering points. So the moment a DDOS comes from China, all incoming traffic from all peering points are blocked, while US users still have access to their websites. This will essentially cause big problems on how the internet was intended to run, but this is one method of defending the WAN by splitting the internet by countries or even states. | |

| Re: US Senator: China Wants Hotels to Filter Internet said by TK Junk Mail :» news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/2008050···d/145430 The Chinese government is demanding that U.S.-owned hotels there filter Internet service during the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing, U.S. Senator Sam Brownback has alleged.
The Chinese government is requiring U.S.-owned hotels to install Internet filters to "monitor and restrict information coming in and out of China," Brownback said Thursday. "This is an insult to the spirit of the games and an affront to American businesses," he said. "I call on China to immediately rescind this demand."
And the question is will the US owned hotels comply - just like Goggle, Yahoo, etc comply on filtering their search engines? I wouldn't filter a god damned thing. -- And so castles made of sand, slip into the sea, eventually.

Just ride it out with some OTC medications that you can take. If you notice deep yellows or greens, or if your "troat" gets worse, consult an MD. I graduated a little too late to enjoy this shit. Anyone here have a member of the opposite sex as a roommate in a college dorm?
I lived in a co-ed house in my senior year of college and in the year after, but that was a big house. This is a single doom room.
