F-L-Y-E-R-S!

This reminds me of the Sabres back in the late '90s. They weren't all that great, but then they had Dominik Hasek. I really, really, really hope Biron doesn't get hurt.

How 'bout them Rangers? Taking the attention away from the Mets? Thanks for 2007!

2 new terms to hate: hactivism & hactivists

A distributed denial-of-service attack on Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty this week is the latest attack in a resurgence of hacktivism (hacking + activism) in the Internet underground, a security researcher says.

The attack knocked out or interrupted eight RFL/RL sites, starting with Belarus and including Kosovo, Russia, and Azerbaijan, according to the news agency's Web site.

At one point the Web sites were getting up to 50,000 fake hits per second from other machines.

Several weeks ago CNN's site was a target of hackers believed to be based in China, sites in France have been targeted, and a year ago Estonian sites were attacked, notes Paul Ferguson, an advanced threat researcher at Trend Micro who wrote about the trend this week.

"These things are generally grass-roots driven, either regional, cultural or national," and unlike most cybercrime attacks, they are not motivated by financial gain, he told CNET News.com.

Because the attacks are designed to limit the flow of information, they have more of a societal impact than other cyberattacks, Ferguson says. "I anticipate we'll see more of these over the summer, driven by geo-political issues" like Tibetan protests during the Olympics being hosted in China, he predicts.
Makes you wonder if the Ddos attacks on Dslreports were political based & instituted by hactivists or if it was a run of the mill shakedown for money.

Nah, the Russians DDOS attack on this site was predicated by Putin since Karl's avatar is Putin's. Putin was upset about the smoking part of the avatar and the scar on his bald head. According to Putin, "If this site were to feature classical music, I never would have told the KGB to whack it." -From Putin's Blog at russiansloveputinorelse.blogspot.com.

Likewise.

DSLR was the most intimidating target they could find, without wetting themselves. It's not like their stones were big enough to DDOS any of the online gambling interests held by the Yakuza.

Nor do I see these cowards trying to take down portals owned by the FSB or Mossad. In DSLR they felt big because a lot of security guys hang out here. It was like throwing a Molotov through the window of the bar where the cops hang out.

And then, of course, running away as fast as you can cause you can't take on the fight you pick.

Ugh, please let's not call it hactivism, it's the stupidest term I have heard yet.

What ever the case my be, cyber crime is on the rise, and this is no surprise as the IP protocols starts infiltrating everything up to the toaster. DDOS attacks are easy to create and controlling botnets simply take it up a level.

As the tools to cause a DDOS become more available and easier to use more and more people become part of this form of attack. Although the damage is not physical it's still intentional and does do a form of damage. No matter how many laws or stiff penalties are placed on cyber crimes such as these, they will continue to rise because they are easy and they are effective.

I wouldn't mind blocking all incoming traffic though from all peering points. So the moment a DDOS comes from China, all incoming traffic from all peering points are blocked, while US users still have access to their websites. This will essentially cause big problems on how the internet was intended to run, but this is one method of defending the WAN by splitting the internet by countries or even states.

US Senator: China Wants Hotels to Filter Internet

»news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/2008050···d/145430
The Chinese government is demanding that U.S.-owned hotels there filter Internet service during the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing, U.S. Senator Sam Brownback has alleged.

The Chinese government is requiring U.S.-owned hotels to install Internet filters to "monitor and restrict information coming in and out of China," Brownback said Thursday. "This is an insult to the spirit of the games and an affront to American businesses," he said. "I call on China to immediately rescind this demand."
And the question is will the US owned hotels comply - just like Goggle, Yahoo, etc comply on filtering their search engines?

Yes, they will comply.

US businesses in foreign countries will follow local laws because they want money--- not to take some stand on politics, freedom, human rights, etc.

They will either filter or suffer punitive action, so they will filter.

Same here. Wife had it 2 weeks ago now I've got it.
At least the weather is conducive to being sick - I hate it when it is really warm out and I'm not feeling well.
This way I get to light a fire, sit in front of it and enjoy the warmth on my face and the smell of the embers......

Would be nice if I had a fireplace, though....

You got it too, huh? I was good, all fall and winter nothing, now this thing. Yeah and this weather right now sucks. It's definitely condusive to sleeping in. I like this part of the year usually--when it's actually Spring.

If I threw a log in the fire right now, I'd probably start wheezing like an MF, so I'm going to pass on it.

Yup - I was not sick all year but a few days ago I felt that "surprise" in the back of my throat. That twinge that makes you realize that by tomorrow your throat is going to feel like you swallowed a box of imported glass shards.
Luckily my friend is a Pharmacist....

And I do have a fireplace but would not light it now cause I would not tolerate the smoke either.

:) If its a cold, nothing is going to work that well. Just ride it out with some OTC medications that you can take. If you notice deep yellows or greens, or if your "troat" gets worse, consult an MD. You'll want one of those things
that ends in cillin or mycin

WATER WATER WATER. Tons of it. I got up twice last night to piss...I usually sleep straight through, so thats when I knew I drank enough.

Google releases iPhone & iPod Touch versions of NEWS search

»googlenewsblog.blogspot.com/2008···our.html
Today, we're happy to announce that Google News is now available to iPhone and iPod Touch users in over 30 countries. This means that you'll see a full-fledged version of Google News on these devices, improved Google News results and, where available, relevant YouTube videos embedded with news stories.
It seems that the iPhone gets special treatment from all the big internet content providers. Will these providers also do code for other mobile platforms? Or will they all wait for the Android open source platform?

FCC caps payouts from USF fund to wireless cell phone co's.

The Federal Communications Commission capped a subsidy program that helps fund cell phone coverage in rural areas.

In a 3-2 vote on Thursday, the FCC said it would limit payments to wireless carriers seeking funds from the Universal Service Fund to help subsidize the cost of providing cell phone service in rural areas.

$1.12 billion last year to phone companies operating in rural areas. In 2001, the fund paid out only $15 million. The increase in funding has led to higher taxes on phone bills for consumers.
A good step. Now do the right thing and get rid of the USF altogether.

Some College Dorms Go To Co-Ed Rooms!

I graduated a little too late to enjoy this shit. Anyone here have a member of the opposite sex as a roommate in a college dorm?

I lived in a co-ed house in my senior year of college and in the year after, but that was a big house. This is a single doom room.

I have to agree with one of the mothers in that article; you'd have to be naive to expect that there wouldn't be some sexual tension after a while.
