»news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7389529.stm
Almost 500,000 people have been caught out by a booby-trapped media file, says security firm McAfee. McAfee said the fake media file outbreak was the largest it had seen for about three years.
Those running the fake file get bombarded with pop-up ads and risk compromising the safety of their PC.
The fake file or trojan has been widely distributed on the eDonkey and Limewire file-sharing networks.
The titles make the file appear to be music tracks, pornography and full versions of popular movies.
Anyone downloading the trojan and trying to run it is asked to install a codec that will play the supposed media.
Instead of playing the media, running the file installs a bundle of adware that plagues a user with pop-ups. --------- Here are some of the titles that download the trojan:

| Some FCC related info on the switch to digital TV next year
FCC to test out digital TV switch in Sept.
The switch to digital broadcasting, the biggest change for the television industry since color TV, will get a trial run in September in Wilmington, N.C.
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin J. Martin plans to announce today that the agency will run the test of the transition to digital to work out the kinks before most of the country's broadcasters stop transmitting traditional analog signals and upgrade to digital-only programming. Congress has mandated that broadcasters move to all-digital technology on Feb. 17, 2009.
The test in North Carolina, Martin's home state, is scheduled to take place Sept. 8, five months ahead of schedule.
The FCC will monitor the switch to digital programming at Wilmington's four commercial stations to get a better idea of the potential problems other markets can expect on a larger scale next year.
The FCC order on this can be found here: »hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/a···32A1.pdf

Appeals court shoots down low-power analog stations request to kill the voucher program.
»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080509/ap_···_lawsuit
A federal appeals court has denied a request from owners of thousands of low-power television stations to force a ban on government-subsidized converter boxes that can't display their signals.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia on Wednesday rejected the request for help filed by the Community Broadcasters Association.
The CBA in March asked the court to order the Federal Communications Commission to ban all digital set-top converter boxes that are not equipped to receive an analog signal, a request that had the potential to derail the biggest broadcasting transition since color television.
The problem facing the 2,600 low-power television stations represented by the association is that they are not subject to the deadline. Most of the converter boxes now on sale will actually block the low-power analog signal from those stations, while the full-power digital signals will display normally. You can go here for any low power stations in your area: »www.ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/LPTVmap.html -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

"derail the biggest broadcasting transition since color television."
Considering that NTSC color is compatible with all of the monochrome sets in use then and now, and considering that they didn't "shut off" black and white TV, that statement is outright wrong. Color TV was not a transition. It was an adjunct...a compatible enhancement.
As for the story it's in...the LPTV licensees could go ahead and convert to digital and solve their own problem. Nothing is stopping them, and there are already 210 licensed digital translators and LPTVs on the air with 1266 granted but not yet built construction permits and 403 applications pending. -- Toolmaster of La Grange.

| Colleges fret RIAA push for state anti-P2P laws
»www.news.com/8301-10784_3-994036···1_3-0-20
The entertainment industry's controversial efforts to get universities to be more proactive about policing peer-to-peer piracy have begun to spread from Capitol Hill to the states.
On Thursday, what appears to be the first such proposal in the country became law in Tennessee--home to Nashville, the country music capital of the world. A similar measure is currently being considered in Illinois. And California held an "informational hearing" last month featuring a Recording Industry Association of America representative, although no legislation has been introduced there yet.
It requires any higher education institution in the state, whether public or private, to develop and enforce a policy that prohibits its students, staff, and faculty from committing copyright infringement. It also requires schools to make "reasonable" attempts to prevent copyright infringement on their networks if they receive 50 or more infringement notices during a preceding year, but it does not explicitly define what those steps are.
Similar legislation is pending in the Illinois state legislature, except it appears to be stricter at this point. It would require universities to "undertake reasonable efforts to install and implement a technology-based deterrent system to attempt to prevent the infringement of copyrighted works" over its networks if it receives at least 10 infringement notices in a given year. If they can't get the feds to move the RIAA will battle it state by state. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

| Life Sux Last month, my reliable old XP computer, Monique, started acting up, the victim of a drive-by. I have done everything except nuke the hard drive (mainly because I haven't gotten all of the files moved yet - the damn thing keeps freezing every time I try...). Well, I was just wasting some time last weekend, pissing off the wife (retaliation ), and I found an Acer Aspire M5640 sitting on a shelf at Worst Buy. $377.00.
Hang on...$377.00?
Well, I couldn't resist.
Now I am finding out what a PITA Vista really is.
At least Media Center is already on it, and that is the main thing I wanted a new computer for, since Monique is, or at least was, still good enough for me.
Now the old lady (a.k.a. my portable dishwasher) is pissed because i bought me a new computer but I didn't buy her new kitchen cabinets.
Oh well....time for another beer.

If Intel making their chips cheaper it means more bang for MY buck.
This way anti trust litigation is ridiculous. Fist there nothing that prevented AMD to enter the CPU market and two I have a choice I chose Intel. Why is government going to do tell me I can not buy Intel or Microsoft products because both over sold their quota? Give me a break folks.

Too bad too, I like AMD And by that time nehalem with 8 real cores and with the serious upgrade of integrated memory controllers will have allready been released for a year. And then less then a year later sandy bridge with 32 seperate cores and a 32nm process will be released.
AMD better find some alien technology to reverse engineer, and do it fast. Intel finally putting the memory controllers on-die the CPU means AMD's only current one-up on Intel will no longer be so. Seeing how fast the Core2Duo allready is - and seeing how it still is limited much more so by the FSB - Nehalem will be an incredible upgrade.

| Started flying again After 5 years pounding the ground, I finally scraped together the money to start flying again.
I earned my Private Pilot's license back in 1995 when I was still a college student, enjoyed some time flying, and then adulthood hit.
I had to shelve my flying for a while. I got current, then 9-11 happened and shut down general aviation for a few months, and money got tight again.
Never really got current again after that. Bopped around here and there with an instructor, but until I paid of my truck last month (YOO HOO!).
So, I flew again for the first time in 4 years this Wednesday (by flying I mean at the controls, not as a passenger in an airliner). I was scared as shit until I got about half way through the pre flight.
About 15 minutes into the flight, everything started coming back. Got through stalls, steep turns, and slow flight like I never left the cockpit. My approaches need a bit of work, but that's part of transitioning from driving Pipers (low wing aircraft) to Cessna's (high wing aircraft).
After about 1.4 hours of dual, my instructor couldn't stop commenting on how well I flew the airplane, especially with 4 years away from the controls.
He told me straight up before we left the ground he wouldn't sign off on my flight review with only 1 flight, and I accept that. He wants to head up one more time before he clears me to fly on my own again.
I have no doubt when we fly next week (I'm on the schedule for Wednesday) he'll sign off on my flight review, and I will again be a current Private Pilot.
I can't convey the sense of personal accomplishment I derived from climbing into the cockpit after 4 years and flying the airplane to "checkride" standards. I expected a lot less.
It was great to be back at the controls, and I've officially been bitten by the aviation bug again.
With all that happened this week (this was the icing on the cake) this is was by far the best week I've had in years.
If the Flyers win, I'm buying some lottery tickets tomorrow.

| EA softens its draconian DRM measures after mass outrage I've submitted it for the news but apparently Karl didn't think it's worthy... anyway, here it is:
In the face of the public outrage they have caused with the announcement of the 10-day re-validation cycles, BioWare and EA decided to drop the idea:
quote: Q: If the game isn't going to require an authentication every 10 days, will it ever require re-authentication? A: Only if the player chooses to download new game content.
In other words any update including patches and error fixes will still require re-validation the game but if the player doesn't want to or cannot download anything (e.g. game runs fine or no internet connection), after initial activation of the game (s)he can play the game forever without any further hassle. Official comments claimed they have changed the validation system to address troops' concerns and while it is obviously part of the story - imagine the PR nightmare the studios and DRM industry would have to deal with when this would hit the Hill -, clearly the mass public outrage has worked its way up to the executive ears as well. EA also announced that similarly to BioWare's Mass Effect the upcoming evolution simulator game Spore, developed by Maxis, will not require re-validation either unless player wants access to new content.
More detail can be found over at Shacknews. --
