It's Friday, so take off your shoes, put up your feet, and empty your head into the comment section below. Here's a recent ad for a FTTH carrier from across the Pacific that might amuse you (and perhaps inspire Verizon's FiOS marketing department).

Given that this is a Japanese Commercial, I loved the use of a Sentai (Power Ranger for us in the USA) Team Members. I am not sure if they are Generic or actually from one of the Series (each year there is a new Sentai show and new Uniforms - we get to see the Disney Sliced-and-Diced PR version the next year unless we get the DVDs from Japan or Hong Kong to see the original during the year they air in Japan).

It's a Hong Kong commercial. The spoken language is Cantonese and the name at the end of the commercial is "Hong Kong [something]".

Good way to illustrate the whole FTTH speed advantage too . And who said the internet wasn't a series of tubes? It's just that bits flow through them, not water

Its not a tube, its a conveyor belt that runs whether there is anything on it or not. If you don't max out the bandwidth of the line then that the unused capacity is gone forever. You can't store megabytes on a conveyor belt, unless the conveyor belt is really long, and you'll have to wait for all the other boxes (which may or may not have data in them) to pass/loop infront of you before you can get your data again. By my math, a fiber optic cable at 1 gigabit can store 300 GB on it if you run it from earth to mars and back again (20 minutes 1 way latency).

Re: Awesome ad

Did you use the speed of light in a vacuum or in fiber?

Light in fiber is more than 30% slower.

Re: Awesome ad

Sorry, clarification: tubes where the liquid moves at light speed and diameter is the actual speed of data difference.

Also, some internet agency or other figured that there is more data than there is storage for it, meaning that, yes, there's a significant amount of data en route from point A to point B. Sorta like flowing down the tubes. A series of tubes connected by valves to holding tanks

And yeah you also have to specify how good your fiber is, I think the terms are single-mode and multimode. Light isn't really "slower" per se, it just bounces around more inside a "thick" strand of fiber vs. in a vacuum, whereas n a thinner "usable" strand, the light takes a more direct path.

@paxio.net

Re: Awesome ad

No, light actually IS slower in a medium like glass vs. vacuum. The relative dielectric constant gives you the ratio of how much slower it is. It's not because the light is "bouncing around" inside the fiber. Single mode fibers guide the light like a waveguide for RF.

In the spirit of argument, maybe they were comparing 6 Mbps DSL to 20 Mbps fiber. Or something like that Fiber isn't always ethernet-speed unfortunately...

Was that methane discharge inside the tube the secret behind Comcast's PowerBoost? It sure seemed effective at speeding the data up.

Congress may OK 'compromise' bill to derail spying lawsuits

»news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-99537···1_3-0-20
The U.S. Congress may soon vote on a new "compromise" spy law that would still likely derail pending suits against AT&T and other companies accused of opening their networks to the government in violation of wiretap law.

The latest proposal, which Republicans are touting as a "compromise," would shift that debate behind closed doors, allowing a secret court to dismiss lawsuits related to the president's warrantless-wiretapping program--that is, during the period after the Sept. 11 attacks and before then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales agreed to submit the so-called Terrorist Surveillance Program to the same secret court for review.

In order to dismiss the suits, the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, whose 11 judges are appointed by the U.S. Supreme Court's chief justice, would be required only to consider whether the attorney general's "certification" requesting surveillance assistance from a communications company was terrorism-related and legally authorized by the president. That's according to a draft proposal and summary provided by Sen. Kit Bond (R-Mo.)'s office and discussed at a press conference last week.

Aides to Democratic leaders told CNET News.com that their bosses are reviewing the proposal and haven't yet taken a position on it. But civil-liberties groups say they fear that, thanks to political pressure, they will ultimately accept much what they call a "sham" compromise.

What remains unclear is what happens next. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said he now hopes to call up a compromise bill for a vote sometime before Congress departs for its August recess.
Let's get this over with and pass something.

Google updates its ubiquitous icon

»news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-99562···1_3-0-20
The search giant updated its favicon, the eensy little 256-pixel logo that appears in browser locations such as bookmarks, URL location bar, and window tabs. The old icon, a capital G in a black box, has been supplanted by a cuddlier-looking blue lower-case g.

The little g doesn't make much sense. They're obviously watering down their logo for something; they want their company to disappear somehow. The old capital G in a box referred to stability. They don't want that now. They don't want us to think of Google as the place to go to for everything, the place to depend on everything for.

They've had a long time to think of a reason for us to not want to use them in some way that is to their advantage. Don't understimate how much this could mean, and the potential in today's baby-boomer-infected world for evil is so bad that I fear for it. Hopefully that's not the case, but it is hard not to be fearful of a company that delivers advertising that intends to not let you use the Internet, instead hijacking it to shove crap down your pipe.

END-to-END

They need to add another "layer" to the OSI Model; probably in the END-to-END Transport section.

Re: END-to-END

The whole layers concept of OSI has always been bogus. When they did it it was way outdated at that time. It's absurd to think the layers are completely seperate; they never have been and never will be. That's bloatware at its worst.

Of course, when they standardized layers, you had to refer to at least some aspect of layering in the code in order to interoperate, but it never helped make the system better in any way; they caused all sorts of problems.

They extrapolated the existing models in the wrong direction. Typical committee designs.

It's quite sad, really; it was an example of how bad OSI was to those of us who experienced ARPAnet type of activities. OSI, because of its incredible political power, did manage to sap a whole generation's worth of the best designs into their borg, and a lot of beautiful work went into OSI never to see the light of day because most working systems didn't use it and didn't let it flourish because of all the garbage OSI represented. The layers thing was just yet another example of that.

I don't doubt at all that if you agree to use layers that you'd find layering problems, including all manner of things, including missing layers. Every time I've read the OSI layers they've never fit the logic of networking to me. They're essentially bogus.

Some MAC address weenie might disagree, of course. "But we can track all your communications at NSA in real time!" Whoopie. Standarization at its best?

Verizon FiOS, is a rip-off!

I just left a Verizon store pissed off!!!

They wanted triple-play for about $140/mo and that was with the lower speed internet of 5MB/2MB.

And a two-year contract!

I could get a landline, DSL, and Cable TV individually for less than that. And they have fiber optics to my apartment complex where they can pump all those services down the pipe digitally!

What are they thinking?

Yeah I read about that, but it's one thing when a cell phone company does it. It's another thing when a cable company gives you a 21 meg connection and then tells you not to use more than 40 Gigs.
