Now a free new Web-based program for the blind aims to improve the situation. It's called WebAnywhere, and it was developed by a computer science graduate student at the University of Washington. Unlike software that has to be installed on PCs, WebAnywhere is an Internet application that can make Web surfing accessible to the blind on most any computer. The developer, Jeffrey Bigham, hopes it lets blind people check a flight time on a public computer at the airport, plan a bus route at the library or type up a quick e-mail at an Internet cafe.
To get WebAnywhere running, a blind person has to manage to get online, which can be complicated on a computer not already set up to give verbal feedback. But Bigham's research found that Web-savvy blind people often know plenty of keyboard tricks and when to ask for help.
Once online, a blind Web surfer can use the WebAnywhere browser, which can link to and then read out loud any page — as long as the computer has speakers or a headphone jack. The program can skip around the section titles, tab through charts or read the page from top to bottom.
Bigham says he hopes others will make improvements to his program, which is open-source to invite tinkering. He doesn't have a personal connection to the issue of computer accessibility — except through his fellow students who are blind — but recognizes the area as wide open for programmers. More info here: »webanywhere.cs.washington.edu/
You can try it out here: »webanywhere.cs.washington.edu/wa.php

No thanks, you can have it We are in the 80's to around 100 during the day here (Inland Mendocino County, Northwestern California), but the humidity levels are low, at night we get the cool, moist onshore flow from the Pacific (about 30 miles west) and it cools it down well into the 50's even on the hottest of days, and the humidity goes from the 15-30% mark during the day to the 60-70% mark at night. Here, hot=dry (daytime offshore flow), cool=moist (nightime onshore flow).
The hottest temp I've ever experienced is 118 just outside of Ridgecrest, CA, it's on Hwy.395 near China Lakes in the desert. I have experienced that heat and humidity in Baton Rouge and Washington DC, and I'm glad I don't have to deal with it. -- »www.amtrak.com »www.amtrakcalifornia.com »www.narprail.org »www.freighrailworks.org »www.up.com »www.bnsf.com »www.northcoastrailroad.org

Two weeks after Joshua Lipton was charged in a drunken driving crash that seriously injured a woman, the 20-year-old college junior attended a Halloween party dressed as a prisoner. Pictures from the party showed him in a black-and-white striped shirt and an orange jumpsuit labeled "Jail Bird."
In the age of the Internet, it might not be hard to guess what happened to those pictures: Someone posted them on the social networking site Facebook. And that offered remarkable evidence for Jay Sullivan, the prosecutor handling Lipton's drunken-driving case.
Sullivan used the pictures to paint Lipton as an unrepentant partier who lived it up while his victim recovered in the hospital. A judge agreed, calling the pictures depraved when sentencing Lipton to two years in prison. This clown thought he was untouchable. But do something in public and it can end up online and be subpoenaed by police.
In this case, someone else did him in. But so many people put their own data and pics online and that comes back to bite them later on - especially when applying for jobs.
The above link shows how others also got extra years in jail for ignoring their own defense attorneys advice to pull down web pages. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page Ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?

ThrowDemsOutIf you can't convince 'em, confuse 'emPremium join:2002-03-03 Mullica Hill, NJ kudos:4 | Watch out - P2P MP3s are being infected with malware
»news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/2008071···d/148603
A new kind of malicious software could pose a danger to Windows users who download music files on peer-to-peer networks.
The new malware inserts links to dangerous Web pages within ASF (Advanced Systems Format) media files.
If a user plays an infected music file, it will launch Internet Explorer and load a malicious Web page which asks the user to download a codec, a well-known trick to get someone to download malware.
The actual download is not a codec but a Trojan horse, which installs a proxy program on the PC, Emm said. The proxy program allows hackers to route other traffic through the compromised PC, helping the hacker essentially cover their tracks for other malicious activity, Emm said.
The ".mp3" extension of the files is not modified, however, so victims may not immediately notice the change, according to Kaspersky Lab.
Most savvy PC users are aware of the codec ruse, but the style of attack is still effective since many media players do need to receive updated codecs occasionally in order to play files.
"Users downloading from P2P networks need to exercise caution anyway, but should also be sensitive to pop-ups appearing upon playing a downloaded video or audio stream," Secure Computing said.
"I think that outside a minority of users who really know about all the dangers implied with Internet use, the vast majority of people have no idea that such a codec download could lead to a Trojan infection," Citay wrote.
Trend Micro calls the malware "Troj_Medpinch.a," Secure Computing named it " "Trojan.ASF.Hijacker.gen" and Kaspersky calls it "Worm.Win32.GetCodec.a." They are not really mp3 files but look like it to the uninformed and this trick will work on many people. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. | That is a very cool idea.... but.... the potential for error or mistake could make a small mistake become a very serious one very quickly.
You know, it occurs to me that if one plans ahead with building design, and built columns designed to attach to jacks, you would essentially create a building that could be raised (or lowered) at will. IE you could "add" floors if you needed more room at the bottom levels and not require structural reinforcements in the already usable spaces.
And when demolition time came around, you could use the same columns to take the building apart. -- "Regulatory capitalism is when companies invest in lawyers, lobbyists, and politicians, instead of plant, people, and customer service." - former FCC Chairman William Kennard (A real FCC Chairman, unlike the current Corporate Spokesperson in the job!)

So apparently no one got fired, but after a lot of yelling, pointing fingers and threatening the employees, they were all made to take private information management classes and had their laptop hard drives encrypted. Of course not all encryption went smoothly and quite a few people had their systems disabled, all their data gone. The more fortunate only had to deal with the performance penalty of the file system encryption on their already ancient laptops full of company spyware.
I guess a high employee morale is not a top priority there, might as well forget about getting a decent service from them either.

Give me a pocketbook and I'll give you as many Thinkpads as you need, with transparent encryption performance-wise (TrueCrypt baby!) and backup to a centralized server for what little employees have to put on their notebooks.
Let's see, you could even do backup on the fly as files are made...heard of AT&T Mobility? Same company.
So get reasonably modern laptops with HSPA built in, and TrueCrypt protecting the data, and you're all good.
And thank goodness AT&T info was stolen itself, rather than customer info...this way AT&T encrypts their computers before another breach happens, and nobody I know gets their uniquely identifiable info stolen...
