| Microsoft may buy RIM & the Blackberry franchise
»www.electronista.com/articles/08···buy.rim/
The recent plunge in Research in Motion's shares may help trigger a takeover by Microsoft, Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek says. The financial expert believes that Microsoft has a "standing offer" to buy out the BlackBerry maker at a value of $50 per share and may do so if RIM's recent share decline leaves it significantly below that mark. The company is said by researchers to be independent but potentially open to a deal if made under friendly terms.
Such a move would immediately alter the smartphone industry. While Windows Mobile is significant with about 18 million devices sold using the platform between mid-2007 and mid-2008, a Microsoft buyout of RIM would give it approximately 20 million BlackBerry users plus any additional growth in the future, giving the company a much larger stake in business phones than it has today. In the US, Microsoft is below the top five in the mainstream user space, which has lately been dominated by the iPhone and BlackBerries. | Re: Microsoft may buy RIM & the Blackberry franchise As a user of various Microsoft products and a BlackBerry, I hope RIM will find a way to stay independent of Microsoft. I would be more comfortable sourcing these products from separate vendors. Can't see benefit for the end user in consolidating these businesses.

| Google still trying make a profit from YouTube purchase
»ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iXap···93LTBE80
Online video leader YouTube has opened up its version of a home shopping network in its latest effort to wring more revenue from its massive audience and justify the $1.76 billion that Google Inc. paid for the site two years ago.
In the new service, unveiled Tuesday in the United States, there will be buttons under YouTube videos to offer viewers a chance to buy music, movies, TV shows, concert tickets and other products featured or mentioned in a particular clip.
When one of the links is clicked, the YouTube viewer is taken to another Web site like Amazon.com or iTunes that's selling a desired song or other product. YouTube will receive a commission for each completed sale. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page Ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?

| If CA wants to get serious about broadband development, the state ought to do away with the regional boundaries of Bell operating companies, and force Verizon and AT&T to share space in each others C.O.s. Let's put FIOS and UVerse in direct competition in every locality. They could even re-institute line-sharing among ILECs and CLECs (if there are any CLECs still in business, that is). | |

| Re: California passes bill to expand broadband deployment Ross, I can understand how the government, by decree, can impose line sharing by CLEC's, and, possibly, how the government can order AT&T to allow Verizon in their area, and vise versa.
However, how do you order a company to overbuild another company's facilities, which you are demanding by putting U-Verse and FIOS in direct competition. That requires a significant expenditure of money to do so, and is a really poor way to achieve competition. In this situation, I would foresee service levels dropping lower than they are now as the companies try to find funds to deal with a government fiat.
The expenses are numerous to properly maintain telco outside plant, especially those installations of "new" technology, such as VRAD's, RT's, etc.

The expenses are numerous to properly maintain telco outside plant, especially those installations of "new" technology, such as VRAD's, RT's, etc. I want to see the much ballyhooed competition that AT&T and Verizon refer to constantly be made at least a possibility, if not a reality. Besides, there is no competition between FIOS and U-Verse; FIOS wins, hands down! I would like to have access to FIOS, but I live in an AT&T service area, five miles from FIOS, so will never see it. In fact, U-Verse is not only over-priced, but spectacularly unavailable, and, when implemented in two to three years, will remain a lagging, third class service long into the foreseeable future. AT&T is sub-standard in every way, except, possibly, for billing.
Verizon wiring up my area for FIOS would be no more expensive than in any other typical urban area. Cheaper, in fact, because there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of miles of dark fiber already laid down during the DotCom boom in my area.
Maintenance of the current AT&T monopoly in my area, in an era where AT&T screams to be free of tariff rate controls, is not conscionable, IMHO. Furthermore, the F2 cables servicing my neighborhood of $1.5M+ homes are as old and decrepit as a rotary dial Bell telephone, probably much older. No upgrading has been done in the 30+ years I've lived here, period!
