| Opera releases latest test version of browser "10 Alpha"
»tech.yahoo.com/news/nf/20081205/tc_nf/63429
Opera Software has just unleashed the first public preview of its next-generation browser for personal computers and Internet-enabled mobile devices. Called Opera 10 alpha, the new release is not intended to show off the full feature set of Opera 10.0, which the software maker says is still "a while off." Instead, the download is intended to give Web designers some initial hands-on experience with significant Opera 10 improvements Opera press release has link to download page: »www.opera.com/press/releases/2008/12/04/
Not overly impressed. It's claim to fame is it passes Acid3 rendering test. | YouTube now doing REAL HD without link kludges
»www.techcrunch.com/2008/12/05/di···or-real/
After teasing us for a year with the option to watch "higher quality" videos that weren't quite high-def, it appears that YouTube is making the switch to HD, at least for some videos that have been uploaded in that quality. Earlier this month, there were reports of YouTube testing this feature, but this morning it seems to be more widespread. (This comes after YouTube adopted a widescreen format for all of its videos last week).
There is nothing on the YouTube Blog yet, but people are starting to notice the new feature on Twitter this morning. You can find a bunch of HD videos on YouTube by searching for "HD." For videos uploaded in HD, in the lower right hand corner there is now a link that says "watch in HD" instead of "watch in higher quality," which is what it used to say.

I'll have to wait for the review on that one, but it brings back memories. I used to play a Ghostbusters game in the 80s on my Atari 800XL. Or was it the 400. I forget. Think it was the 800.

| Socially acceptable check cashing time...
As someone who does 99% of his financial transactions of any kind online (which means I write very few checks), what is considered to be a socially acceptable time frame for a person to cash a check I wrote and handed right to them?
This check happens to be for a local business. FWIW, today was day 23, finally cashed. 17 business days, if you don't want to count weekends.
My guess is that's a little on the long side, right? -- "Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy." - George Carlin

If it doesn't clear right away you're making money on it, so what's the big? Nothing is the matter really. It's all entered for, and recorded properly. I'm just amazed that a business doesn't appear want my money. I'd hear a lot of complaints if I waited nearly a month to a cash a customer's check. I think checks kind of suck anyway. They're getting pretty archaic. When I get them, they invariably get misplaced and I forget to cash them right away.
My credit union just started a cool feature, though. You can scan the checks on your scanner and deposit them online. Truely awesome feature, and I've not misplaced any checks for quite some time because of it. -- change | bobrk

The right thing to do if you find a check that you have not cashed and it is several months old, just return it to the maker with an apology. It doesn't make sense to try to cash it. The maker might even be dead by now.

Had it happen once. Very annoying to say the least. Now you have to keep accounting for that stray 40 dollars. Oh man, that would honestly keep me up nights for the simple fact that it's on my mind, and when something is on my mind, I don't sleep well. That hasn't happened to me yet, but if it did, I might even cancel the check and call the recipient. -- "Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy." - George Carlin

| I've had checks go that long before being deposited at the SAME bank (different branch) from which they were written. I even mentioned the fact that the check was still outstanding but it still took some extra time to get it deposited. Granted that this was a check written to a non-profit and everyone is a volunteer, but a month is a long time to have a check outstanding in this digital age. | |

| Christmas Spirit and Charity Normally I don't shill for charities. However I have found one that is well worth it. The name is LBEH.ORG. It stands for "Let's Bring 'Em Home". This charity takes money and airline miles and uses them to bring our soldiers home to spend Christmas with there families. So lets help out servicemen and women, who give so much of themselves, and protect our freedoms, to have a merry Christmas with their families. | |

| Can someone tell me... Why the "Big 3" shouldn't just go into bankruptcy? It doesn't mean that they have to stop doing business, right? It allows them to renegotiate their contracts, and that's exactly what needs to happen if they're going to survive.
It makes me laugh when I hear the head of UAW on the radio say that they're now radio to make concessions in order to assist in this hard times. O RLY? Seriously? You're the reason that the Big 3 haven been going down the $hitter in the first place...and now they're finally willing to do some more negotiating? I am not saying they auto makers weren't idiots to offer them some of the deals they did to buy out some contracts, but good lord...If I were the Big 3 I would drop into bankruptcy so fast it'd make their head spin. The greed of the unions has put them in this predicament and you almost get the feeling they're going to act like a parasite and ride this thing until its dead, rather than take a step back and realize they can keep getting what they're getting until the well runs dry in less than a year, or take less, but continue to receive SOMETHING? (Last I heard, I believe GM is paying 2 grand for benefits for every car that rolls of the line, while Toyota is somewhere in the ballpark of $700. How are you ever going to compete with that?)
And....AND....they're going to retool and make all kinds of nice, green cars that they don't even know if people want?? So, were also going to have to drive what the government tells us (by proxy of the automakers asskissing?)
AND...even with the bailout, it will only delay the inevitable, their business model is friggin borked, period.

1 edit | 2 things just want to say that we are loving the xm-sirius satellite radio thing; the choices there are crazy. also, on the checkbook thing, i'll be on record that every month without fail i balance all of our checkbooks to the penny; responsible fiscal management is predicated on this. not to do this speaks to mediocrity that is so normal these days. i'd strongly suspect that the greater part of america these days has no idea HOW to balance a checkbook...
