From VoIP to VoIM Combining voice and IM features People who love instant messaging are finding that they can combine it with VoIP technologies to get the best of voice, data, video and file-sharing services. The merged product, dubbed VoIM, seems to primarily be of interest to enterprises but may intrigue some residential users who spend a bulk of their time engaging in online communication. "VoIM is catching on fast. According to the Radicati Group Inc., there will be more than 1 billion IM accounts in use by 2009. Whats more, a high percentage of those accounts will have direct access to VoIP within the same time frame. As the number of accounts grows, usage is expected to increase to 46.5 billion messages per day by 2009; 39.5 billion of those message will be sent on public networks, while 7 billion will be sent on enterprise networks." There are some security concerns with VoIM which companies working on the technology are trying to address with built-in protective features.

A friend of mine used to call me using one of these IM proggies wayyyy back, before 6meg DL's... It was laggy, but it also was a free long distance phone call.

I remember back in '95 when they had TCP/IP clients (some windows 3.11 program, don't remember the name now) to do this as well. It worked great over a 14.4 modem connection, no long distance bills. I use to talk to friends over it to save money when long distance rates were insane. Back when a lot of those mom and pop dial up ISP were around.

I wonder how long before someone sues about a patent? Quick I better patent VoIM and wait a few years before going on a lawsuit rampage.

This is new? I think what is new is that several companies are now selling this to the business enterprise marketplace. And the companies want to make sure it integrates with their existing systems and has heightened security.

Despite varying features, the one thing that these solutions hold in common is the promise of greater security than that currently provided by public IM networks.
Fortunately, enterprise-grade VoIM solutions from vendors including IBM, Microsoft and Effusia offer built-in security features such as 128-bit SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption to safeguard against intercepted messages and IM-based viruses. Another safe alternative is for companies to turn to IM-management vendors such as Akonix Systems Inc. and FaceTime Communications that provide security and compliance services for corporate use of IM and other real-time communications. When it comes to marrying two hot technologies like VoIP and IM, youre better safe than sorry.
