Frontier Increases Modem Rental Fee
From $3.99 to $6.99 per month...
by Karl Bode Monday 23-Nov-2009 tags: dsl · business · Frontier Communications
Frontier users have been receiving notices that the company is bumping the cost of their monthly model rental fee for all DSL customers. According to a notice being sent to customers, the company has officially bumped the monthly modem rental fee from $3.99 to $6.99 per month. The new price point means users will now shell out $168 for a modem they won't own over the length of a two-year contract. Somebody has to pay for all the legal fees and ad campaigns focused on getting their Verizon deal approved, and it's apparently you. As our users note, some users can get Frontier to waive the rental fee if they get a modem elsewhere, but your mileage on this front may vary.

OOL

Optimum Online has been giving free modems for years. I joined up before that started so I had to purchase my modem. The nice thing is, cablevision supports it and has upgraded me once to a newer modem that I still own.

Re: OOL

DSL modem rentals? ROFLMAO! Even AT&T isn't that stupid.

You can buy they at local computer shops.

Do they charge a few for tech support too? $.99 a call. LOL!

Maybe AT&T gets a little better discount since they by a few dozen more?

where are the rest of the 23 comments. This type of increase would be an absolute deal buster for me.

Disclosure needed!

Will Frontier post a list of approved modems, that their technical support department will support? In view of the fact that when it comes to DSL service most Telephone Companies will only support the modems that they supply. If Frontier increases the price of their service can customers void their contracts without paying Frontier's outrageous early termination fee?

Re: Disclosure needed!

I have two of their modems I will sell to the highest bidder. But truth be told, I don't believe they will allow older modems/without the fee. In less competitive markets they will surely not allow a bring your own approach. On the other hand, in more competitive markets they will most likely relent to a BYO modem sans fee.
Either way, even my current provider Surewest, is charging a FEE of $3.99 relating to the internet, for what I have no idea.

I wouldn't count on a list of approved modems. Most people on contract would not see the price increase because you are on contract. If you do, let me know -- that would be enough to get you out of a contract with no ETF as it would represent a materially adverse change in terms.

A DSL modem is not that expensive. Renting one makes about as much sense as renting a landline phone these days.

Re: Fools

You can buy good DSL modems all day long on EBay for way under $100. I have bought brand new modems there under $50 and found them to work much better than some providers supplied modems.

Some Customers, But Perhaps Not All

Just a clarification -- I cannot say (and did not) this will impact all DSL customers. We've heard about it and seen it in our area, but prices can vary depending on promotion, location, whether you are on or off contract, etc.

Frontier's promotions are extremely variable. When I tried Frontier DSL this spring, they threw free local Wi-Fi into the mix, a $9.99 a month value, but it never got put on my bill properly and took several phone calls to fix, because CSR's couldn't figure out how I was offered the promo in the first place and didn't find a billing credit code for it.

On modem rental, I paid $3.99 a month, some other customers were paying $4.99 a month locally, and people in Cortland, NY to our east pay $5.99 a month. Then people in my neck of the woods started seeing the $6.99 price point in October: »soundbytes.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13117

and thats the problem with blogs. Everyone considers them to be the truth when they're NOT! And in fact this is just a fee that is not the same across the board. Just like everything else varies depending on the market.

If he changes the word "all" to "some" it becomes completely accurate. I've seen plenty of newspaper reports that are not always accurate either, so blog-slamming doesn't buy you much. Besides, unlike too many newspapers, the ability for people to respond and provide additional details, corrections, insight, etc., is a major benefit blogs have that the insular world of many in the press simply can't stand -- fact checking.

I also haven't seen anyone consider a blog or newspaper completely true. Hell, entire narratives in the marketplace of ideas have been built on the idea that the media are wrong/leftist/corporatist/rightist/stupid.

Re: Some Customers, But Perhaps Not All

surf this site and see how many people find blogs that are real. Your website for example; is a BLOG not a news site. As considering your self an editor? Not accurate.

Blogs only give people a place to vent and then go on, the same as you do on your website in trying to prevent caps. or as what has been said; defeated caps with TWC, which we know wasn't true.

not so easy

IIRC Frontier uses PPPoA for ADSL; that will limit the selection of customer supplied equipment.

Slow speeds, POTS taxes, outrageous ETFs, now higher modem fees... WTG Frontier, you just increased your churn rate a few more notches!

Re: not so easy

Pretty sure that most modems can still do PPPoA, though you'll hae to do it on the modem rather than the router.

Here are a few bunches of modems you can get, starting at $50 for a basic one:

Thanks for the links, I saved one of the links just in case this Verizon to Frontier deal goes through and My 7500 modem/router is deemed not welcome and the 7500 is Mine, I own It outright as I don't pay any rental fee here for My DSL. As to their free wifi? They can keep It, As I already have wifi @ 108Mbps that I paid for out of My own pocket, So why would I need Frontiers or Verizons?

Admittedly I'm in a different continent but BT prefers that you use PPPoA to connect, and there's certainly no shortage of modems available. I don't think the UK is unique in this, either.

Despite BT preferring that you used PPPoA, they will quite happily let you connect with oE if you like. Is Frontier not the same?

$6.99

...is a bargain compared to what my ISP charges.

I have Prolog in Pennsylvania, and they charge $10 a month to rent a cable modem. They've been charging this much for the past 10 years, at least.

I bought my own for about $60.

Glad to get rid of it

I am so glad I went back to Road Runner. Besides having more bandwidth and lower latency, it is much cheaper, too.

No charge at all....currently

Interestingly enough I've had a speedstream 5667 for years now that came with frontier never charged a modem fee. recently had to talk with tech support suggested my old hardware may be the issue the tech said stats all look fine but it could be replaced if i so choose. I let him know that there was no need i would probably just have to go to the trouble of bridging it then ending up with a modem rental fee. hopefully they don't expect to start charging a fee for this old 5667 or I'll let them have it back so they can just toss it due to age and go purchase a suitable replacement.

cast off verizon habits

you all need to understand that frontier is in cast off former Verizon land.. so there isn't any competition, therefore the only game in town (haha, dsl.. super dsl 2+, woohoo!) can nickel & dime the consumer... except that DSL modems are dirt cheap! for a rental of $7 a month, you could *BUY* your modem in under a year-- the rest is gravy to frontier if your *renting* at that rate. $168 for a modem is b/s, not for dsl!! TRY $40-60.. in some northeast states (IN REAL BROADBAND DEPLOYMENT ZONES) with verizon & cablevision you'll find them even cheaper at garage sales and being thrown away.. as dsl isn't used... FTTP & cablemodems are..
