I do agree it is not likely the FCC will actually do anything that really benefits consumers. If this auction doesn't have protections to ensure the incumbents don't gobble everything up, broadband in the U.S. is going to be screwed for a long time. | |

Those that have the most to gain, who not so coincidentally have large amounts of cash to throw at the problem (generated of course from the stranglehold on the same market), just perpetuate themselves.

"Whoever wins this spectrum has to provide … truly open broadband network — one that will open the door to a lot of innovative services for consumers," Martin said in an interview Monday.
What this would mean in practice: "You can use any wireless device and download any mobile broadband application, with no restrictions," Martin explained. The only exceptions would be software that is illegal or could harm a network.
This still seems to go beyond Carterphone. I can't imagine Martin would overload the meaning of his quote so much as to leave a lot of room for distortion. I guess we'll find out. | |

I wasn't the only one wondering why FCC Martin had suddenly changed his stripes yesterday and came out announcing a seemingly (note: seemingly) Telco-unfriendly move that was pro-consumer....
... Turns out it was really just a sneak attack to derail REAL progress and maintain Telco dominance. Since this has been his M.O. all along, I would have to say that now it all becomes clear. I think this Martin is just another industry crony in this administration that should be thrown out on his ass.

| Disappointing All I have wanted to be able to do since 2000 was have a PDA/Tablet connect to a wireless network with bandwidth. I will add the VOIP software of choice, most likely under one form of Linux or the other.
Too bad I hope it doesn't become another abomination like the current cellphone services/systems available currently | |
