Get Online Anywhere with Sony Ericsson's MD300`
First in a line of mobile broadband products
by KathrynV Saturday 10-Nov-2007 tags: business · wireless · hardware
Municipal Wi-Fi programs may not have given us the universal connectivity that people were hoping for but that doesn’t mean that you can’t connect to the Internet whenever you need to. Sony Ericsson has announced the release of the first-ever mobile broadband USB which connects you to HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE or GPRS networks. The MD300 is a simple USB modem which comes with all PC software included so that you essentially just plug it into the computer and find your connection. Mac users can download drivers for compatibility. Johan Tysklind, the company’s Mobile Computing Marketing Director, says that this is just the first product in an upcoming mobile broadband portfolio.

good

good for them. I have no need until tmobile gets 3g. Most people prefer these usb drive instead of a pcmcia card anyways for some reason. Maybe the desktop compatibility or the idea it is just like the other usb memory thumb drives.

Cool but...

...other than having a radio that's different from the ones in EVDO dongles, how is this newsorthy? Did I miss something?

Nice!

Seems like a nice device, having WiFi and EVDO together in one single device sounds like a good idea (sure, most laptops have built-in WiFi) not to mention the other bands it operates on. I think this device will sell very well. Do we know if it has an external antenna port?

WiFi?

EVDO?

Where in the press release do you see any mention of WiFi or EVDO?

The MD300 is all you need to get your mobile office up-to-speed, whether you’re on a HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE or GPRS network anywhere in the world.

Actually, it is just going around in a small circle. It will likely still be in the same place on Monday.

How does this device differ from something like the Huawei USB modems currently offered by many vendors:

Re: Nice!

seems like it would break off easily, just like a flash drive, but in use more often...

kinda flimsy looking to use on a laptop.

Re: so....

I don't see it anywhere that says everyone can get online for free, just that one can get online. Although it's NOT mentioned, presumably access other than Wi-fi is with an existing mobile carrier data account.

Anywhere, I don't think so....

The title of the article should not be what it is, anywhere means well anywhere (city to farm in the middle of nowhere). I hate AT&T's comercails they act like you can connect anywhere, ya in every freaken comercial they are talking about "CITIES"

Re: Anywhere, I don't think so....

well, you are just getting the definitions mixed up.

anywhere = city

nowhere = where you are at.

don't live in the middle of nowhere.

Anywhere?

Quote from cited article: "The MD300 is all you need to get your mobile office up-to-speed, whether you’re on a HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE or GPRS network anywhere in the world."

So it can access the network even when my cell phone cannot. What an amazing piece of hardware, I need to get one to use up at the cabin.
And to think that all this time I have been using an "access area limited" Bluetooth USB interface dongle to connect my laptop with my phones cellular data network. Dam thing cost me like $15 too..
