Getting $10 AT&T DSL Still a Pain?
Company says they've made it easier....
by Karl Bode Monday 20-Aug-2007 tags: dsl · prices · business · AT&T DSL Service
AT&T's $10 768kbps DSL service, required as a BellSouth merger condition, was quietly launched and isn't advertised (AT&T's CEO says users don't want it). The St Louis Post Dispatch complains that users are still having a hard time signing up for the offer, and in some cases, are being billed for higher-priced DSL even when they successfully sign up.

Dozens of readers have e-mailed or called us asking why the AT&T site wouldn't let them sign up for the cheap deal. A woman in south St. Louis County said the site told her she was not eligible. She called a company rep who said she was. But when her bill came, it was $14.99.

The company says they've redesigned the website to make finding the deal easier. On the side of a screen where they promote the same tier for $14.99, they now have a URL that says "DSL at even a lower price!" This takes you to the $10 order URL (requires zip, area code).

I thought that was specifically AT&T/Bellsouth customers. Should not apply to Sonic.net customers.

This is a common problem for users of rebranded DSL lines,
the line owner (AT&T in this case) can't cutoff an third party DSL user, and even if you call Sonic.net to disconnect that maynot show up in the AT&T status/order computer for weeks.
You might have more luck via the phone, but I this problem shift from a third party back to verizon, according to them I would have to quit the third party then wait one or more weeks before verizon to reinstall.
When they cut the DSL off they also killed my phone line for a 3 day holiday weekend, so I canceled the verizon DSL and bought a cable modem.

Just to clarify, this is NOT "rebranded" DSL - it is sold wholesale to the ISP. There is a difference.

User's don't want it?

Please, your average Joe is looking for a bargain. You're just TOO CHEAP to advertise it because you're not going to make any decent profit from it. You want to be a monopoly? Fine, but abide by the conditions.

Ok..here's my results..

Having seen this story posted, I rushed right on over to my friendly AT&T site. (lol..)

And, with breathless anticipation..I tried to order their 10.00 service. (we all KNOW I haven't had AT&T DSL before..right gang? )

Here's my experience with it.

First of all, I don't have a landline.

And so, after clicking that little linky thing down below..I get prompted for my address.

So..I enter it.

And it comes back with a list of addresses that COULD be mine.

Ok..there's one on there that looks like it's it..and their site tells me to enter it EXACTLY in the format requested.

So..I do that.

And..it then comes back with...

the same exact list of addresses it could be.

But no AT&T..really..I'm on this here list and I just entered it EXACTLY as you wanted me to.

And..doing it again just to make sure my morning coffee really did kick in and it wasn't MY Fault the first time around..it comes back and gives me..

the same exact list of addresses it COULD be.

Anyways..after 5 or 6 attempts at just getting past that very simple stage I FINALLY get a combination to work.
Mind you..it wasn't the combination Their site recommended..
I used my own RR..errr...Comcast rick ingenuity to arrive at that.

Anyways..BINGO!! It says..Rick..is THIS your address?

Wow..yea. Imagine that..it's the same one that was on your list before and..jeesh..i don't THINK i've moved in the last 10 minutes.

Anyways...Bingo again!! WE HAVE A MATCH!! Alarms start going off and balloons start dropping down!!

The page starts to refresh and....

We're sorry..DSL isn't available at your address...would you like to enter your email address and be informed when it is?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

No thanks AT&T...Really..I'll manage to live somehow without it!!

And..oh..btw..the really funny thing is..i live exactly 1 mile from your Central office..as in 5000 feet or so.

Trust me..It's available.

LOL!!!

Gawd..Comcast is going to put you out of business.

That much.I am sure.

Revamped Site

Yeah, I tried the link above and didn't get the $10 offer but the $14.99. I'm sure AT&T revamped their site to make it harder not easier to find the cheaper offer. I tried the link at the bottom of their page (which used to get your there), but no longer works.

as a stockholder

i want them to bury it and put as many obstacles they can legally get away with in front of this 'product'. it pisses me off that at&t allowed themselves to be hoodwinked into offering something so out of line with the market and is guaranteed to loose money.

I would have much rather seen them offer to wire up schools or give money to charity than this piece of work.

Maybe you should've thought twice before investing in the antiquated deathstar network.

fcc fine em

@verizon.net

let the fcc do it's job

file breach of merger complaints against AT&T, these are conditions of the merger between at&t and bellsouth.. if they re-neg or make it exceedingly difficult to subscribe, written complaints should go directly to the FCC who rubber stamped this fiasco.

Re: easy

Good luck with your first bill. I was charged 14.99 and called and said "I ordered $10 DSL". Their response? "We don't have $10 DSL, sorry". I spoke with 3 different people and even emailed the confirmation of my web order. All 3 REFUSED to correct this....I short paid my bill and wrote a letter explaining, as well as included a copy of my web order. Fingers crossed......

no trouble at my end

Look for the link below the 14.99 deal that that says how to get it even cheaper (1 year commitment.) I've had a cheap AT&T land line all my life so it was a trip through the usual online ordering hooey after 4 qualifiying questions. Equipment and service delivered within days. Everything billed to phone bill and equipment rebated.

One onerous charge - $12.95! for UPS ground.

Caveat: If not noted already on the left - I'm in San Antonio, TX. Home of the monster.

Make a real request.

Go to the Secretary of State in your state....most states put it on-line.

Locate the registered agent for the company and send them a letter making a request for service by registered mail return receipt.

That gets you a date and who signed for the request recorded.

Now, you need a copy of the merger documents from the FCC and the SEC. That will get you the details of the agreement to offer the service.

Document everything.

You may find that they will live up to the agreements...
If not contact the heads of the agencies that required the offerings and find out about enforcement provisions.

If they do not have a way to enforce the rules then the government is all BS and you need to think about what government is about when you vote.

I would suggest looking at Ron Paul as a real candidate.

I order the $10 line several weeks ago...it WAS difficult to find (down in the mice type).

Now it *IS* displayed pretty prominently and actually lists the $10 option FIRST.

So for it's working as advertised for me.

Offer being given incorrectly

This offer is supposed to be for a-la-carte DSL only with no phone line for $10 a month - but in order to get it you have to put in a phone number, so this offer is bogus and not working correctly.

Re: Offer being given incorrectly

You offer ten dollar DSL but not in areas that would be poor enough to need 10 dollar DSL. And you hide it too.

Thanks for being so great ATT.

AT&T $10 DSL Deal

When I saw this offer mentioned here a couple of months ago I went to the AT&T website, found the $10/month offer with no trouble (I think it was in the lower lefthand corner of the webpage), ordered it, got the materials in 2 days, got it up and running, performance is really better than I expected. The first bill included the full wireless router cost (with rebate to come), shipping, and $10 for DSL service. Next bill just arrived, again $10 for DSL.

I view this as a good deal, no problems. Not as fast as my Verizon FiOS service at our other house, but really not bad at all, and quite a bit cheaper.

$10 plus $25 in taxes and fees!

I didn't have a landlline, so I ordered a landline for $10.69 plus the $10 DSL deal. The bill arrived, and I almost messed my shorts when I was reminded that the federal, state, and local taxes are ridiculous on the landlines ... $25 in taxes for a $10 local phone line?!?! For Chrissakes ... shame on me.

Re: $10 plus $25 in taxes and fees!

I dont trust ATT anyway. Back when I had it in Springfield MO I had issues from the beginning. Asked for upgrade to Pro speed, got downgraded to something resembling dial up. Finally got my upgrade then 3 months later got down graded back to where I started from. They claimed they didn't know how it happened. Then lost DSL and they couldn't find where I was a DSL subscriber.

They are crooked people, so what they are doing here with the $10 dollar offer doesn't surprise me at all.

Business Customers only?

I do not have a landline phone service. When I type my address in at the "get dsl at an even lower price" page I get the following.

"This promotion is available to business customers only. If you are a residential customer, please call our residential customer service center at 1-877-722-3755 Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm PT to find out about the great residential offers we have available for you."
