Execs opine on recent cable speed hikes
(old news - 12:14PM Sunday Nov 02 2003)
tags: bandwidth · cable
While at least five US cable providers have increased downstream speeds in what several claim is an act of "customer appreciation", there's hints that upstream increases could be in the works as well. According to this Cable Datacom News article, Jeff King, president of Road Runner and executive vice president of Time Warner Cable Network Services, notes that the company is "looking at 512 kilobits per second (kbps) upstream." King also notes that the organization "never considered a price increase." A good thing, since the cost impact of providing higher downstream speeds is fairly insignificant, and gives them an edge in DSL competition. One Adelphia exec opines in the article that its "good to be on the offensive again" in relation to speed increases.

Now if the executives would realize that a large portion of their current and potential customers would love to see prices fall (or the elimination of soft caps), we might be getting somewhere.

We Can Only Hope

All I ask is to double the speed from 365 kbps to around 750.
Then I'll be happy.

512? Sweet! This'll almost be like when I first got roadrunner when it had 3500/1000 caps.

I'll be happy with a symmetric connection 3000/3000.
I'd even be happy with a slower download to get a faster upload 2000/2000.
At least give me half the upload speed of my download 3000/1500.
This 3000/384 just isn't cutting it, but most people only care about download, so that's what we get.
They may as well make it 3000/1.

Re: Sure

Good thing about this is that Time Warner has never ever ever ever sent me a letter about my bandwidth usage. Does this mean that there are no caps? Probably not, but when my bandwidth gets excessive (200 gb or more) I still haven't hit the caps... which is fine with me.

adelphia is offensive alright

with adelphia jacking up my total bill in the vicinity of 30%, they could have kept their upgrade from 3000/128 to 3000/256. its not like i can do anything to take advantage of the bigger upload like run a server. all it means is when i attach pictures to my posts here they go a bit quicker. oh and they added about 8 redundant channels to my cable.

Might wanna relook at your agreements. unless you have roadrunner extreme, you have a 40gb bytecap.

Caps depend on your area. RR Extreme isn't offered here in upstate NY and I haven't received any letters from Time Warner about exceeding any caps (knock on head...er...uhm...wood). My usage HAS to be in the 60-70 gig/month range.

Hehe.. me too. Cable gives you a (usually) fast pipe to often crummy routing, and latency that could be just about anything from minute to minute. Someday folks will understand that there's a lot more to a quality broadband connection than just the potential maximum speed of the "last mile" connection.

My 6000/600 DSL connection costs more than cable, but I know exactly what I'm getting for my money.

Re: Yay

thats exactally why i went with dsl. also because too many people in my area have roadrunner/insight/time warner so the speeds at the times i use it are 800-1.2 mb/115-135(my neighbor has it and it sucks) up and is $50 plus a month so ill stick to my reliable unchanging but Sometimes slower(and cheaper ) dsl.

Customer Appreciation!!!!!!!

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.......

Raising speeds is all for ONE reason. MONEY!!! I have said it before and I'll say it again.... These companies are only increasing speeds so that each subscriber will reach their alotted monthly bandwidth more quickly which means they can start charging more money for more gigabytes.

We've all read it here before... Comcast sends out these warning letters to people who have supposedly used up their (as yet undefined) monthly bandwith and face having their accounts suspended.

These companies are just in the testing phase right now to see if there is some kind of "average" usage among households. As soon as they establish a base reference, they'll come with a dollar amount and begin charging.

Just remember when it happens.... You heard it here first.

*coughs*

In my area there are two ISPs. Rogers Cable and Aliant Telecom. Rogers offers 1500/192 and the phone company offers 1500/768. I only have rogers cause of it's 10 bucks cheaper because we have cable tv too. I would lover Rogers to increase it a bit. Especially my lantenty. It is always at least 300ms. I hate it!

Give me a tier that allows servers over down/up speed increases anytime. I don't need much bandwidth; I just want to host my DNS server and personal web pages on my home connection, instead of somewhere else.

A properly run server will not have those problems.

On the other hand, there are many more non-server computers that *are* exploited that currently exist on cable networks.

Too bad hundreds of "properly run servers" were downed at Continental Airlines and thousands of businesses where the IT guys aren't stupid in the past years flush of viruses.

a properly configured server can still be hacked. haven't you noticed the rise in net scanning over the past 3 months.

there is a simple rule of no servers becuase you don't pay a heavy fee and because the service is for residential users. Go get a cheap webhost.

I'm not going to debate server configurations here and whether or not they can be hacked.

Fact is that comcast users *non-server* computers (clients like Windows) are hacked all the time.

So it wouldn't make a difference, would it. And since I'm willing to spring for the cost of the tier, it'll be just that more worth it.

Your way is just sticking your heads in the sand. Sorry.

Yeah, this is great news for the few people that can actually get cable. Until cable companies expand their service areas to anywhere near DSL availability, the point is rather moot.

Uh, what? You can't be serious. Last time I checked, Cable was available in a much wider service area than DSL. I guess this depends on your locale, as with all other things.
As for the increase in upload, I wish others would see the light and follow suit. There is one company in specific that has introduced tiers that seem way off base compared to what the rest of the industry is starting to offer. The cable co's are losing customers to DSL SLOWLY but SURELY. I am not pro-cable or pro-dsl, I am just all for competetion. I think it's good for business and it's good for the consumer. These increases by TW are very nice. IMO, it makes up for the price gap in between cable and DSL. Cheers to RR.

cable = no server?

I thought cable won't let you run a server. What will an increase in upload do for you without a server? This just means if you are running a server and constantly use up the faster upload they will see it and cut you off.

I haven't seen any cable companies that actually allow servers in their TOS. i know that speakeasy DSL explicitly allows for servers (even on residential accounts). there may be other DSL providers that allow servers as well

Well there are many uses for UPLOAD speed and i sure hope the ones using it for hosting websites will be caught. There are many webhosts for that, and cheap too. Broadband is mostly for entertainment (personal not business accounts). I'd like to use my upload speed i get more for playing games decently and yes host a private game or 2, but not be a webserver lamer (you know who u are).

By the way one can argue that you hosting a game will use as much if not more bandwidth than a personal website.

Your post illustrates exactly why I'll never consider cable as a viable alternative to DSL. I don't need to be thinking "Gosh golly jee, I must be ruining some guy's CS game down the block" every time I decide to use my upload.

Charter Can't/Won't Keep Up

I'd guess that Charter will be lagging behind -- both in terms of download speed and speed to market. 2M/256 just doesn't cut it when others are offering 3M/384 or better for the same or LOWER prices. Time to play catch-up, Charter!

Excuse for B/W Shaping?

RR has just started advertising "3000 Kbps download". Interesting to note that two weeks ago I was getting 6/1.5 Mbps regularly on the speed test here. Now I'm seeing less than 600/384 Kbps. Latest today was 400/360 Kbps.
It appears that RR has implemented shaping and is advertising it as an increase.
