Google: Big Plans For Google Voice In 2010
Expect more telco, cable attacks on search giant as a result...
by Karl Bode Wednesday 30-Dec-2009 tags: competition · business · alternatives · bandwidth · Google
We've discussed at length how what Google Voice is starting could significantly alter the telecom industry, even if there's still a significant number of people who don't understand why (or what Google Voice even does). While 2009 involved lifting voicemail, contact management and other functionality off of the phone company and delivering it to the user on a server (aka the "cloud"), 2010 will be about integrating Google's acuiqistion of softphone operator Gizmo5, and making Google Voice increasingly like Skype -- and then some. Says Google's Bradley Horowitz to eWeek:

"What we're trying to do with telephony is give people a seamless experience that frees up their telephony communication from the silos where it's lived for the last decade. Voicemail, my contacts, all of those things have been segregated from the rest of my Web experience. We have big plans to do a better job."

Of course as Google (and inevitably a flurry of other more limber companies) begin doing a better job with the network GUI/Voicemail/call mechanics and user experience than the phone companies, companies like AT&T and Verizon face the possibility of being little more than dumb pipe providers. This utterly terrifies all cable and phone executives. To stop this, and the obliteration of dying cash cow business models (wireless "minutes," SMS come to mind) companies used to generations of pampered monopoly are going to have to do two things they're not exactly known for: innovate and quickly adapt.

So far, AT&T and Verizon have done neither. Instead, the baby bells have done what they do best: use lobbyists and smear merchants to attack Google's credibility. AT&T and Verizon's policy folks tried very hard in 2009 to paint Google as the worst sort of evil (See: AT&T's claim that Google hates nuns, or AT&T/Verizon funded Scott Cleland's fact-optional claim that Google's a evil bandwidth-sucking monster that doesn't invest in infrastructure). If the phone companies want to beat back Google in 2010, they're going to have to stop whining and actually start competing -- and that's good news for consumers.

i have 3 invites. send me pm, first come first serve.

I've enjoyed GV since google acquired them from grandcentral. I loved how i can block calls and give them the "not in service" message. I use it more on the outbound end now since it has an app for the blackberry (has it for the iphone and the droid of course)

Love it!

I use GV and I like it a lot. I love how when someone calls, it rings both my cell and home phone at the same time. I also like that I can switch the call from my cell to my home phone without hanging up the call. The only thing I don't like is that it's easier for people to call you than it is for you to call them but that's ok. Looking forward to the improvements..unless the telcos and cable companies find a way to ruin it all.

It is only for incoming and to do the transfer, press * on the phone you are speaking on.

Your other phone will ring, you answer and then can hang up the first call.

This doesn't seem to work for me. I called my GV # (forwarded to me cell) from another line, and pressing * on the cell (after the connected call) does nothing.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Is there a place I can read more about this feature?

There really isnt a network to support it. HSPA+ is the first , aside from wifi. Once LTE is the standard, i see alot more SIP based phones become more common.

Yeah I got like 10 because I have 3 google voice accounts. The first was from an old phone and didn't like the number, one for my regular phone and a out of area one for my business phone.

Gave away all my invites from messages after posting this thread. Sorry.

No surprise...

...that the incumbent monopolies are willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on false advertising, FUD, and lobbyists/paid shills posing as public interest groups/other deceitful tactics. These fools will never learn, until they are buried. INNOVATE, don't litigate.

Unfortunately for Google, 2010 will likely be "the year" where scrutiny of them and their ever-expanding reach comes to high fruition. Privacy advocates are already going nuts and with that will come the inevitable hearings, investigations, etc (no doubt spurred on by the $$$ lining congressional pockets from Ma Bell and company) but it shall be interesting indeed to watch as Google shakes everything up!

Google Voice is Very Nice

Google Voice has been a wonderful thing for me. I am using it combined with my MagicJack phone service. Why ? Because here in 585 area code land I can only get a Batavia,NY number for my MagicJack which is long distance for some of my friends.. Google Voice gives me a local 585 number that these same folks can call me at with no long distance charges.

VZ ...innovate or google eats your lunch

Been using GV for at least 2 years. Got in in the olde Grand Central days. What a great product. How innovative. I wish Google would get into the "dumb pipes" biz and put vz out of their misery. I have been harassing vz for over a year to get me FIOS digital voice. I already have fios but the FDV is supposed to be more "GV" like in its features. I have given up and am sure I will be disappointed. The little innovation vz does well it has to gouge for to feed its union workers and hungry shareholders on wall st.

Re: VZ ...innovate or google eats your lunch

Interesting how some like Google Voice when the same features and a lot more have been available for years now. Asterisk does more than GV though it doesnt do voice transcription, and there are several web-interface providers. No, I'm not talking about high priced but feature poor lock-in vendors like Vonage, or other proprietary vendors like Skype, I'm talking about vendor lock-in free SIP and IAX2 providers whose only shortcoming is that they don't advertise as much as Google.

Re: VZ ...innovate or google eats your lunch

Because for most folks, SIP is more hassle than it's worth. Most just want to be up and running and go, hence why Skype and Vonage are both rather popular options. Who wants to spend hours configuring arcane scripts and config files? Asterisk is a great product, I'm not bashing it, just saying too much for most.

Works Alright Even With Reduced Functionality

I've been using GV for a while now. Having only Canadian phone numbers for myself though, I've only been able to use it for so far is SMS, vm over internet and some voice over a friend's MagicJack. That said though, it seems like a really good idea and if they introduce SIP functionality I think that will make it a huge competitor to cellphones and landlines.

EDIT: I also have 3 invites for anyone that wants to try it. PM if you want one.

Karl, can you put together some yearly

numbers about how much AT&T and Verizon spend on these smear tactics rather than improving their networks?

Seems like once a week I read about these companies spending millions through idiotic lawsuits or contributions to politicians or some other useless way to spend money rather than on the customers

Why no direct SIP connectivity?

The thing I don't understand about Google Voice is why they don't make their service truly useful, by supporting SIP endpoints (whether they be actual hardware devices like IP phones or Linksys PAP2's, etc., or software SIP clients such as Zoiper, X-Lite, etc.). Even if they only offered support for incoming calls in this way, it would make their service far more useful to many people.

You used to be able to achieve this effect by going through a two-step process of using a Google Voice number and making the destination a Gizmo5 account. Gizmo5 was the ONLY SIP-based service they supported (I could never understand why) but then Google did their usual trick: They bought Gizmo5 and promptly shut off registrations for new users (fortunately the rumor mill gave some of us a day or two's advance notice, but most people had no idea it was going to happen). I could never understand how Google can consider themselves "not evil" when every time they buy an arguably useful net-based service, they shut off new registrations for a year or so… but I digress.

Anyway, I always wondered why we had to do the Gizmo5 two-step in the first place, and why Google Voice couldn't simply offer SIP connectivity. Seems to me it would be far cheaper for them than having to forward calls to the PSTN (and pay terminating charges to every large and small phone company that they send calls through).

As an example, right now you can go on their site and make a call - they call you (and most often the call goes though the PSTN) and then they call the person you want to call (again through the PSTN) and bridge the two calls together, so you are talking on their dime, and they are paying for two outgoing phone calls. Why not try to make it as easy as possible to keep at least one leg of that connection (the caller's end) entirely on the Internet, whenever possible? It just doesn't make sense to me.

This has been discussed in a few threads. As I recall, they don't want to be considered a telephone company and thus be subject to the regulatory apparatus that governs all or most of what a telephone company does. By requiring the end user to get voice calls via another provider's cell phone or landline, they have calculated that this argument will work.

In other words, before they make this leap, they are waiting for regulators to adjust to the new reality of a post-POTS world.

It is. It's called Google Voice for BlackBerry. I've never used their web app to make a call.

As for me the killer app on Google Voice: SMS via email (which means I can text people without incurring SMS charges). Absolutely imperative for me. I just can't justify paying 15 cents for a text message given how small the footprint is on the bandwidth used to send it. I also remember when you got free incoming calls and free incoming texts - until the phone companies got greedy. Thank goodness for Google Voice.

GV is just asterisk for the masses

I mean it's interesting and decently navigable by non-tech people or people just not willing to set one up, but it's just a front end to a proxy sip server, with free incoming calls already set up. If you have an asterisk server, you've probably been doing all the stuff in GV (and more) for ages.

But like someone else mentioned in the thread, it'd be much more useful if GV just went with a SIP interface; that would just throw the gates open to interoperability with the ubiquitous SIP servers and providers all over the place, probably facilitating the transition to a full VOIP based network.
