Google Fiber Construction Begins in Atlanta Friday Jun 26 2015 09:08 EDT Over the last few weeks Google Fiber has given updates stating the company has started construction of its Google Fiber networks in Salt Lake City, Charlotte, and the Raleigh/Durham region. Now Google says the Google Fiber team has also started building the company's new gigabit network in Atlanta. As with these other new markets, Google's still not stating when users in these areas will be allowed to sign up for service, or when the first gigabit connection is expected to go live. "Since we first announced we’d bring Google Fiber to nine cities across metro Atlanta (including Decatur), we’ve been hard at work designing our fiber network,” the company states. "Now that the design is complete, we’re ready to begin construction starting today. We’ll start in Atlanta’s midtown area and expand construction to all nine cities over the coming months." According to Google, they'll be doing work in Atlanta, Avondale Estates, Brookhaven, College Park, Decatur, East Point, Hapeville, Sandy Springs and Smyrna over the coming months, then will notify users when it's time to sign up. In Google Fiber launch markets, $70 a month nets you a symmetrical 1 Gbps connection with no added fees. $130 a month nets you a symmetrical 1 Gbps connection and TV service. Users also have the option of a free 5 Mbps tier if they're willing to pay a $300 installation fee (which can be paid in installments). » twitter.com/googlefiber/ ··· 27948289 |

Progress by GoogleI know this post is about Atlanta but it seems Google is picking up steam once they get final approval by the cities.
About two weeks ago Durham gave Google Fiber agreement the go ahead as part of the consent agenda with 40 other things in a single City Council vote. Funny part, Durham also consent to building a city wide fiber network owned by the city, much Chapel Hill built a few years ago to run traffic systems, schools and other stuff.

If governments and the 1% keep building private fiber networks who will bring fiber to the out-premises of the great unwashed?

Re: Progress by GoogleNobody. The great unwashed -if lucky- will get DOCSIS cable service. If your not blessed by the Comcast/Charter-Warner you must pay up for the Verizontal/Eyteatea LTE.
The miserable washed will continue to gorge themselves on profit until their bellies explode, possibly taking the whole rotten financial structure with them.

Dunwoody?I wonder if Dunwoody is being lumped w/Sandy Springs; They're right next to each other and have higher incomes than Sandy Springs. I can only dream! I can't wait to start seeing the fiber being laid down. Sandy Springs is literally 2 minutes away. Twin Cities if you will.

Re: Dunwoody?I said/hope/thought the same thing about Vinings (right next to Smyrna)

I have a friend who lives in Dunwoody and they've been running fiber in front of his apartment building. They dug up the street in front of his building which they have been working on for roughly 3 months. He finally asked them after his morning jog what they were doing after seeing construction there for so long and was told it was for Google Fiber. So I'd like to say it's a good chance you may see it.

Marietta FITLIf only they could lease/buy out the fiber laid by bell south, all they would have to do is extend the fiber about 10 feet to the side of my house. Especially since att no longer wishes to provide service to legacy customers.

Re: Marietta FITLAT&T's desire to replace IFITL with GPON FTTH is clear - they've been filing regulatory notices to make it happen, including in Georgia

Google FiberWhen are they coming to New York City? I used to live in Atlanta but I moved back to NYC and now live in Brooklyn. And I know Google will be welcomed in Brooklyn, we're sick and tired of Verizon.
