Google Fiber Seeking Sales Manager in NYC

Google recently stated they were considering expanding Google Fiber to a list of 34 cities in nine metro areas. While New York City wasn't on the list, Geek.com has noticed that Google Fiber is advertising for a Google Fiber regional sales manager for the New York City region.

"As a Google Fiber Regional Sales Manager, you will manage multiple teams that evangelize Google Fiber services to MDU (multi-dwelling apartments and condos) and large SMB owners," notes the listing. "You will hire and manage a team that proactively reaches out and and articulates how Google Fiber Solutions can help make their work more productive."

So far, Google Fiber has targeted low hanging fruit -- or markets where competition is particularly stagnant and next-gen telco options (like FiOS) aren't -- like Provo, Utah. They've avoided entering major Eastern cities where competition historically has been a bit more vibrant and logistics can get immeasurably more complicated.

New York City is a curious potential market, however. While there's more intense competition in the suburbs, the city proper is dominated by Time Warner Cable, who has been lazy about serious speed improvements for years (they're only now promising 300 Mbps in NY and LA just as Comcast looks to acquire them). Verizon meanwhile has lagged on its promise to deploy FiOS to the majority of all five boroughs.

A Google Fiber entry into New York City, though unlikely, would be an entertaining kick in the pants to both companies, or to Comcast should their acquisition of Time Warner Cable be approved.

Update: Or not. Google sent us this statement, which suggests that NYC residents shouldn't expect Google Fiber to come to town anytime soon:
quote:
Don't read into the job listing; we've had a full team of folks working on Fiber in the New York office (and other locations around the world) for years. We don't currently have any plans to bring Google Fiber to New York. We're entirely focused on building out our networks in Kansas City, Austin and Provo, and on exploring the possibility of bringing Fiber to the 34 locations we announced in February.
