User MxxCon writes: "Google finally added the ability to view satellite maps using their acquired www.keyhole.com technology to their Google Maps and Local search. excellent!" Just plug an address into Google Maps or Google Local, then click on the "satellite" link to receive a scrollable, zoomable bird's eye view. Also see announcement via the Google blog.

You probably have a 3rd party build of Firefox. I know stype's earlier 1.0.2 build had problems viewing GoogleMaps, but that has been fixed.

Re: Thumbs up!

Looking at construction in my neighborhood, I'd say within the last year. Maybe more recently.

Images tend to look better when taken during Winter - less tree cover and better contrast if there is snow. These appear to have been taken in warm weather. I'd say last summer.

Search Ability is Still Disappointing

Unfortunately, Google still can't find either of my home's addresses. Hopefully this will eventually be fixed. I think the Satellite view is pretty neat though, although the novelty might wear off after a while. Does anyone know how old the satellite images are?

It looks like the same images I had seen on mapquest 2 years ago.

I guess, it depends on where you live. Some of the images seem older then other ones. The area around my house includes a new cul-de-sac that was built about 2 yrs ago.

I think you should be able to zoom in more so I can see my house and school better.

Re: zoom

I agree it needs to zoom in about 2x or 3x closer. Terra server is still better IMO..closer zoom and larger image.

I agree it would be cool to zoom in to about 500 ft or so.

Go google!

I like being able to click and drag both the maps and the sat photots around. This is certainly a keeper in my book.

Nice, but better zoom please.

My house and yard.
I like how easy it is to pan around, but I wish it would zoom in a bit more. Also, how current are these images?

Re: Nice, but better zoom please.

Not a bad service but all of you guys are right, I think.

It needs to be up to date and more detailed( my area is very densely populated and there are new building gong up every day) and the click and drag feature is also pretty cool. other than that, my address came up right away no problems. I'll take it since it's for free.

My house and yard on TerraServer
TerraServer loses on speed/controls, but wins on overall image quality. You can almost tell which direction I mowed the lawn that week. Also, no watermark is nice.

Very cool - I do like the panning around, very nice. I'd also like some more zoom.

My area had to be taken a couple years ago, on a weekend in the spring (no cars at my work, cars at the local baseball field, no cars at the pool)

Want better zoom? Try Keyhole by Google.

If you want closer zoom, you'll have to use Google's other offering: »www.keyhole.com Use the 7 day trial, it's pretty cool.

Re: Want better zoom? Try Keyhole by Google.

Actually, I like the software NASA makes better than keyhole. It took me awhile to get the very close imagery, but it is just as good as Keyhole, and the interface is better in my opinion. »worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/

Terraserver still has better data

Click for full size
Terraserver, max zoom
Click for full size
Google, same image @ max
This is a nice toy but »terraserver.microsoft.com has better coverage, integrates USGS maps and uses the same USGS "Urban Areas" Color Ortho Image files (where available) Google does, but lets you zoom in, print, save and generally use the image. See above--both are the same image but Google won't zoom in further. Terraserver also has the Black and White USGS data to use inside and outside of the newer Urban Areas photos and tells you the date the photos were taken, and it's free. Google is trying to keep you from saving the image, and has a copyright watermark all over it.

Nice try, Google, but you've got some work to do...

For me Google is better! More up to date and it's colored and not to mention it has a lot more features and the SAME zoom as terra server!

I take that back, terrasoft got even closer than Keyhole for Staples Center...

keyhole has a better interface though, you can spin or drag the map in real time, no clicking and waiting.

Re: Terraserver still has better data

I like the other interfaces especially for casual use, but you can't beat Terraserver for utility, especially since they maintain proper scale with respect to the other views (topo and older B & W). They all have a use, but Terraserver gives the most bang for a free service IMHO. I use these a lot.

Thanks Google!

I used to be able to do this on almost all mapping sites, but then they started just offering graphical maps and not satellite imagery. Thanks to Google we now have an AWESOME FAR SUPERIOR graphical map + an AWESOME FAR SUPERIOR satellite imagery system! Not to mention it is free!

Good truly is taking over the world, but honestly I can't complain under this regime!

Anyone notice some of them zoom in very nicely at high quality, and then there are the blurry as hell green-tinted ones?

The images near my house are the nice clear ones thank god Seems these are over 3 years old; there's that new building OHS has had for the last 3 years missing, and where we have a new gas station is still a dirt lot.
