With a PC and a Playstation 3, you can watch YouTube on TV

Google has announced that it has a new Windows application which makes it possible to access all of your Google content on your television using a DLNA device such as a PlayStation 3. It's named Google Media Server and works on any PC running the Google Desktop, allowing things like YouTube videos and Picasa photos to be viewable on your television. This has led some to suggest that the Google Set-Top Box could be the next big thing announced by the company.

Youtube

Youtube videos have been supported on the PS3 since...well...I think forever.

Re: Meh...

The Wii always could do this.

Unless the PS3 has some crappy browser why does it need something running on your PC to do this?

Good, another alternative

It's often difficult to use the PS3 to stream videos across a network with third party apps like Windows Media Player or TVersity. WMP doesn't have a very intuitive interface when it streams the media, and TVersity has some show stopping bugs. For example, certain encoded videos I have will crash the media server outright.

It will be interesting to see what Google brings to the table. Maybe the same on-the-fly encoding TVersity offers with more stability and supported formats?

I just wish Sony would open up the PS3 more to allow third parties to put XBMC on it. I still keep my old XBox around because that little thing will play anything I throw at it.

Linux DLNA server

If they only offered that, then I would be interested.

Ive been using Mediatomb on my Linux server for a while. It does a good job of transcoding flv files to mpeg.

PC Video on my TV

I've been watching PC Content on my TV for years...it's called using an S-VIDEO cable from my video card to my S-VIDEO input on my DVD Recorder.

This allows me to record anything to DVD from my PC as well.

Not everyone likes WMP. Another option. Can't tell how works because it doesn't work with the Xbox 360.

I'm not 100% sure how the 360 streams it's media, but I assume it's UPnP like most other devices (PS3, HD20 receiver, etc). From the article:
All you need is a PC running Google Desktop and a UPnP-enabled device

Now the google media server can SEE the xbox 360 the 360 canot see the google media server. I read on some other board that the only way to get the 360 to recognize the google media server is to trick it into thinking it was made by microsoft and the guy from google said the legal dept advised against doing that.

I also read where if you edit the .xml you can get it to work but when I did it I could at least get the 360 to see the media server but I couldn't get it to do anything else. maybe I didn't do it right.

Re: Many things out there do this.

Looks like you're right.

At time of development the only way to connect the XBox 360 to a UPnP
server, was to have a service that is only found on Microsoft services
(used for registering for DRM content) and for the server itself to be
claimed to be made by microsoft. Legal would not allow us to pretend
to be microsoft (although there are other servers out there that do).

Yep that's where i got my info. I tried the hack but it still didn't work. it did get the 360 to see the media server though. kind of useles if you can't access the actual media.

I use WMP 11 anyways, but I did want to compare to 2.

I used to stream off our two macs to our Xbox 360s with a program called Connect360. Basically it allows the Mac to become a Media server. You can see anything as long as it doesn't have DRM.

Decent video card

Get a video card with some sort of output(Youtube doesn't really require DVI or HDMI) and connect your computer to the TV.
Not only can you watch Youtube, but any thing else found on the intertubes or your HDD.

WTF is your deal? You are the one suggesting I spend money on a media server device when I can use free services with the equipment I already have. Are you arguing just to argue today? seriously. you're suggesting the solution to my problem of google media server not working with the 360 is spend hundreds on a dedicated media server. Does that make any kind of sense?

LOL!
You are the one that came to my post and started to argue, something about the computer in the other room and 40ft S-Video cables...
I and fireflier showed you that they do exist.

Not everyone here has a XBOX.
Apparently most here do have computers and a video card is WAY cheaper than a XBOX.
I never suggested you spend money on anything.

Your original reply to me was argumentative and uninformed. We pointed you to monoprice.
I showed you what a HTPC was - never suggested you buy one. Just showing that they do exist.
Tried to show that one doesn't need a console to watch some crappy Youtube video on the TV.

You are the one that wishes to continue arguing. I think it's funny myself.

So do whatever it is that you wish to do.

I would argue more people have XBoxes and PS3's near a TV than PC's. HTPC's are such a niche product and you're trying to espouse their use over already common household electronics.

Seriously, calm down. Both have their merits. Dedicated media systems like the 360, PS3, Apple TV, high def receiver (many can stream media) are cheap, relatively plug and play, and ubiquitous in homes that would take advantage of this. HTPC's are far more functional but are often either expensive or difficult to get running.

Do you even read? seriously. if you ALREADY have one of those why spend the money on the thing he's suggesting? or are you too obtuse to understand that?

let me put to you this way. Say you have a 2 year old car that is in excellent condition. The only problem is only get 25 MPG and I suggest your solution is to by a new hybrid that get 50 MGP. Sure you'll save on gas. The extra money you spend on the car is in FAR excess of the savings on gas though now isn't it. Same type thing.

So, an Xbox costs less than a $37.99 video card:
...and a $12.xx cable?
*I* own several computers, a video card(if I needed one) would be more cost effective.
I do not own a XBOX or PS3.
Last time I checked, a console cost $300+.

Wow! You're not a happy person, are you?

s-video?

OMG!! I think I will stick with the HDMI cable that connects my 52" 1080p LCD HDTV to my HTPC. The picture from its $130 internal Blu-ray drive looks alot better that way.
You would have to pry my HTPC out of my cold dead hands before you could ever force me to use a game console. That would be like replacing a Ferrari with a Yugo.

What's really sad is that most of the public is so blind to the benefits offered by an HTPC that they would actually buy a Google Set-Top Box. I just can't stop laughing about that one.

A) There are people that still have SDTVs and those don't come with HDMI. Personally my graphics card has dvi, vga and s-video. Only s-video would work as a connection to my Tv.

B) Appearantly you didn't READ the article. There isn't a set up BOX to buy you ninny, it's SOFTWARE and it's free.

Well that wont be for long, as soon as their TV dies they will have no alternative other than an HDTV as a replacement unless they want used junk or some tiny little screen. Nice how that works out and all.

Why would you even use Orb?

It's pretty easy to set up your own stream server, just install ShoutCast.
Just dont open any ports on your router for it, that way it will only be accessable from your home network (not the internet). If you want to securely stream individual selections "on-demand" over the internet you can use AIVMS.

Re: Why would you even use Orb?

I did have my laptop connected directly to my A/V receiver and accessed all my media stored on my Desktop in the other room over my wireless network, which worked fine until my laptop went belly up. I prefer that method. Guess I'll just have to wait for enough $$ to replace the laptop.
