story category Google Offers Free Holiday Airport Wi-Fi
At 47 airports nationwide...
08:09AM Tuesday Nov 10 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: business · wireless
Google already announced they're offering free Wi-Fi over the holidays, and now it appears they've upped the ante -- announcing they'll be offering free Wi-Fi at 47 airports nationwide for the holiday season. "This is one of our holiday gifts to our users, and when you connect, we also hope you'll take the opportunity to try some of the latest Google products," says the self-proclaimed "not evil" search giant. You can find a full list of participating airports here. Unfortunately, some of the nation's busiest airports are nowhere to be found -- like all three New York City airports or Chicago O'Hare.

Washington airports aren't there either

Neither of the two airports closest to me are included either. They don't have free Wi-Fi, only for-fee access.

Re: Washington airports aren't there either

snarl!!!! Google is giving free WiFi at Airports, (the sound of things being demolished) Why didn't you think of that. Grrr!!!!
This big airports have for fee wifi access they sure would not want a free service horning in on what ever they are making money wise.

Mean while in the inter sanctums of M$.................

Re: Washington airports aren't there either

On the rail station for newark & linden (both cities have airports) they have the combo opt/comc wifi. Not sure about inside newark, i'll check if i end up going up that way friday. Linden i dunno, it's a much smaller operation meant for general aviation craft.

Not to great PR

I would rather see Google pay someones bills who have been out of work for over 1 year due to these tough economic times then to offer free services to those who can afford such expensive luxuries like traveling via airliner.

GeeWiz Google can't even give something away without somebody bitching about it......Oh Michigan, I understand now. The State's economy is trashed because of destruction of the Car industry caused by miss-management, the UAW, and the Federal Government. with the State left holding the bag. You have my sympathy

Yeah...perhaps like some people FROM Google...after kicking them to the curb when they buy a company and SCREW it into the GROUND.

Why?

Google is going around not being evil, and they offer this. Why? Because more people online at airports = more Google views. Everyone wins.

Google isn't the government, and I'm sure this is dirt cheap compared to paying even a dozen people unemployment...

It is clear you didn't quite understand the post.

Also, if you think those Mountain View clowns "do no evil", just keep drinking that Kool-Aid.

Re: Not to great PR

I didn't say they do no evil, but they seem to try more than the average company.

Again, Google isn't Uncle Sam. They have no obligation to do anything philanthropic if they don't want to. In addition, wiring airports is cheap relative to paying anyone unemployment, and it's also a logical Google thing to do.

Re: Not to great PR

OK I will explain.

Original poster...

I would rather see Google pay someones bills who have been out of work for over 1 year due to these tough economic times then to offer free services to those who can afford such expensive luxuries like traveling via airliner.

Me...with clarifications

Yeah...perhaps like some people FROM Google (who lost their jobs) ...after kicking them to the curb (the Do No Evil Google did the kicking) when they buy a company and SCREW it into the GROUND. (the Do No Evil Borg did this, where many of my former co workers are still out of work 7 months later Some of us who were lucky to find work took a 50% paycut in order to eat).

Hope this clears it up.

Your post "Google is going around not being evil". While the words "do no" are not in the post, the Borg does a substantial amount of evil...every day.

At no time did I ever imply that Google was Uncle Sam. I was being sarcastic regarding the original post I responded to. That adolescent romper room with no clue how the real world works does plenty of evil, but their brainwashed fanboys across the entire Internet trip all over themselves with this "but Google isn't evil" crap.

Re: Not to great PR

*shrugs* Companies buy other companies, and lay off people. Life sucks, but might be more efficient that way.

By the way, which company did Google buy and lay off people from? DoubleClick, by any chance?

Re: Not to great PR

dMarc Feb, 2006. Sold this past summer. Took 2 functioning products, currently working 24-7/365 and sunsetted them, for their "brilliant" system, written in Java, and so unstable, as week barely goes by without a crash. Products for mission critical environments that barely run 1 week. "Best and brightest" my @$$.

The Borg couldn't understand WHY the industry they bought into, just simply would not do things the "Google" way, just because, well, they are Google.

So they sell the business, and upset the lives of nearly 60 brilliant people...and if they had stayed the hell out of the business in the first place, we would ALL be better off.

No O'Hare

I will be flying back and forth from Seattle to O'Hare.
Seattle has it for free while O'Hare does not.

This is nice, but why skip the larger airports where people will have layovers?
ATL, ORD, EWR, and LAX should step up and match this.

Re: No O'Hare

I bet the airports already have contracts with some provider that would not be too pleased if Google came and started taking their business.

come to think of it I think a couple of these airports that I've been to had free wifi anyways.. meh

Yup, T-Mobile or ATT (forgot who) would probably be pretty upset if Google came in and started offering free wifi.

Mind you the customers would be happy but we can't have that. Especially at airports.

Re: No O'Hare

According to Boingo website all these airports ATL, ORD, EWR, and LAX have wifi access through Boingo.

I know for a fact that you can either use ATT or Boingo at the Indianapolis airport. If you have Boingo installed it will hide the ATT SSID from being shown to trick you into using Boingo. I used to have free Wifi with my ATT DSL and have used it in the Indy Airport. But anyways Indy is having the free Boingo Wifi even though ATT is there.

Re: No O'Hare

I think Boingo just aggregates hotspots, including AT&T and T-Mobile.

Re: No O'Hare

ATT and Tmobile basically set it up so they can accept Boingo logins, but the Boingo software will hide the native ATT or Tmobile SSID and only let you see the Boingo SSID.

If you are an ATT dsl customer and also use boingo, when running the Boingo software you only see the Boingo SSID and could be tricked into paying when if you knew it had an ATT SSID you could connect for free.

Re: No O'Hare

O'Hare doesn't get it for one very important reason....a free service does not have anything to kickback or skim to Hizzoner Daley or his cronies.

"Whad...free? Ya mean I don't get nothin'? Forgettaboutit!"

To the Chicago Aviation Department, airport WiFi is like a parking meter, merely a revenue source.

So says the Florida redneck.

In reality, AT&T and T-mo have contracts at O'Hare, and if you know what you are doing you can get free access from both.

Opti-Fi

Google teamed up with Opti-Fi. They're the company that manages the WiFi at these airports. Well what's left of the ones that pay Opti.

Last time I checked, SMF airport offers it free already.
