Search Giant strikes partnerships for mobile runaround...
(old news - 09:27AM Monday Nov 05 2007)

Google's previously mentioned "open phone" coalition will include Sprint, Motorola, Samsung and Japanese wireless provider NTT DoCoMo. Together they'll work cooperatively on a new Linux-based Google mobile OS overlaid with Java. USAToday notes that the primary goal is to end the "walled garden" domination by carriers. Guess who's not excited?

Noticeably absent from the Google coalition: AT&T (T) and Verizon Wireless (VZ). Both carriers are talking to Google about the possibility of allowing its applications to be included on devices, but they remain cool to the notion of supporting any device that favors Google over other providers. AT&T and Verizon are also concerned about Google's plans to use wireless devices as mobile billboards for a crush of advertisements.
Given that Sprint and Google are also teaming up to offer services for Sprint's mobile WiMax service, that partnership is certainly one to watch as the upcoming 700Mhz spectrum auction approaches. The new OS will be dubbed "the G System," and will offer "easy access to the Internet at PC-type speeds" the paper informs the world (as opposed to say, calculator-type speeds).

Name

I'd rather see it named the G-Spot. That way, if you loose your phone, you can Google the term "Where is the G-Spot" and it will give you a Google map of it's current location. Of course, some people still will have a hard time finding it no matter how hard they look.

Hmmmm

This just might get me into a cell phone at last. As a hamradio operator I have not felt the need for one any one I want to talk to is on the other end of a radio. We will have to see. One thing about this Google is like the 900 pound gorilla it can sit any where it wants, and there is not a damn thing the chimpanzees can do about it.

It took me until two years ago to finally get one. I used auto-patch when in the car and VOIP at home. However, after one too many frustrations of needing a working payphone and not finding one I finally bit the bullet and signed on with T-Mobile during a Labor Day promotion back in 2005. I have not regretted it.

Now if the Google phone mandates the use of SIM cards or their CDMA equivalent R-UIM's then it will be a fantastic package.

it's about time

samsung makes money on the hardware
google makes money on the OS and apps
cell service providers make money on plans

and consumers FINALLY get phones that
can do whatever the heck they want, and
American's can go back to innovating
the hell out of the rest of the World!

iPhones are nice, but a gPhone is what
would make me break a contract to get.
- when version 1.1 hits, of course

But will it run windows? All we need now is the M-Phone, ATTaPhone, and the V-Phone to make the circle complete.

We'll see how open this thing really stays once money becomes involved. Additionally isn't Google going to be putting advertisements on these things? According to the article at CNN they were.

The New G-Phone? We can only hope.

Just think what this would mean for Google. They can mostly by pass the major ISP's and their threats of charging Google for access. A place for them to place ad's, music services, etc, etc. If this comes about this is going to rock the wireless digital world.

Re: it's about time

That is one slick looking phone. Hey Steve.. hows your blood pressure?
Next question, will be be priced lower (199.99?) after rebates, blah blah blah.. Maybe it's just me but I seem to recall all the media blitz months before iPhone came out. Guess google doesn't have as much money allicated to buying air time to "push" their product down everyones throat like Apple did. But, gotta wonder what the deciding factor was for Google? VZW=Control freaks. ATT=Not only no but hell no, keep your iPhone. Sprint=Wimax, nice backbone that can handle the bandwidth needs.. oh yea. T-Moble=Spread the wealth (hey, the guys at google always did like the underdog)

The built in computing power of the Meiz phone is impressive. The Blog gives the target price range and it's straight price is cheaper, plug in discounts and you will really have a iPhone killer.

Google makes their official announcement - Android

A broad alliance of leading technology and wireless companies today joined forces to announce the development of Android, the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. Google Inc., T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm, Motorola and others have collaborated on the development of Android through the Open Handset Alliance, a multinational alliance of technology and mobile industry leaders.

Consumers should expect the first phones based on Android to be available in the second half of 2008.

Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt. "Today's announcement is more ambitious than any single 'Google Phone' that the press has been speculating about over the past few weeks.
Weird with the name of Android.

Here is the list of the companies in the coalition:
Aplix (www.aplixcorp.com), Ascender Corporation (www.ascendercorp.com), Audience (www.audience.com), Broadcom (www.broadcom.com), China Mobile (www.chinamobile.com), eBay (www.ebay.com), Esmertec (www.esmertec.com), Google (www.google.com), HTC (www.htc.com), Intel (www.intel.com), KDDI (www.kddi.com), LivingImage (www.livingimage.jp), LG (www.lge.com), Marvell (www.marvell.com), Motorola (www.motorola.com), NMS Communications (www.nmscommunications.com), Noser (www.noser.com), NTT DoCoMo, Inc. (www.nttdocomo.com), Nuance (www.nuance.com), Nvidia (www.nvidia.com), PacketVideo (www.packetvideo.com), Qualcomm (www.qualcomm.com), Samsung (www.samsung.com), SiRF (www.sirf.com), SkyPop (www.skypop.com), SONiVOX (www.sonivoxrocks.com), Sprint Nextel (www.sprint.com), Synaptics (www.synaptics.com), TAT - The Astonishing Tribe (www.tat.se), Telecom Italia (www.telecomitalia.com), Telefónica (www.telefonica.es), Texas Instruments (www.ti.com), T-Mobile (www.t-mobile.com), Wind River (www.windriver.com).

Here is the OFFICIAL web site for the handset alliance:

And Sprint's announcement of support for the open source mobile handset:
»newsreleases.sprint.com/phoenix.···=1072575

Looks like USAToday missed the boat on its inside info by quite a bit.

Re: Google makes their official announcement - Android

The Google Blog also has something to say on the subject of the new phone alliance:
»googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/11/···one.html
Despite all of the very interesting speculation over the last few months, we're not announcing a Gphone. However, we think what we are announcing -- the Open Handset Alliance and Android -- is more significant and ambitious than a single phone. In fact, through the joint efforts of the members of the Open Handset Alliance, we hope Android will be the foundation for many new phones and will create an entirely new mobile experience for users, with new applications and new capabilities we can’t imagine today.

Oh my

If I read the way this open source system is going to work any of you who might have stock in any of the pre-paid cell phone services should dump their stock now. The Android phone is going to kill them off. These pre-paid services have always been a total rip-off.

well it depends would there be a single Gphone or multiple phones that follow some kinda "Gphone" standard.

if they do this right it could totally trash the iPhone if it isnt made single network centric.

From my reading of the news release and the Google Blog, etc., it appears that there will not be some specific Gphone, but phones from multiple hardware vendors that will work on various wireless carriers(in the US to start at least Sprint & T-mobile). The phone will have a Linux based OS and the coalition will be providing a development toolkit that any developer can use to write open source apps for the phone. Google will, of course, have their own apps written for this open source cell phone OS. But any other vendor can write apps for the platform as well - say Yahoo or MSN search tools and not just Google's search tool.

The application development toolkit is supposed to be out next week. And hardware vendors will be releasing phones that the new OS can run on by 2nd half of 2008.

Don't know about this one, but normally phones are ported to GSM for ATT (old cingular, older ATT) first then since T is also GSM, they buy the same phones.

Truly open will be you go buy the phone on line or at WalMart, with a cable or blue tooth. Then program in from open source sites the way you want it, then contact carrier.

Some reporting on the new Android OS

A transcript of the press conference:

Overall, the technical press, as opposed to the general press, are not very impressed with Android and what it means for cell phone users having an open platform. Basically they feel that hardware vendors and ISPs can still create a locked-down phone - but one based on free software. While this may be a small step to open systems, it is a very small one and isn't the paradigm shift many were predicting about a Gphone shaking up the marketplace.

Exactly. And there's no way the carriers are going to allow an unlocked phone without a law requiring it. Google effectively announced an embedded software development kit. Big deal.

Exactly.... I don't see the value in a Google branded phone. If I choose to remove all of the Google apps on the phone then where does this benefit Google?

95% will not care

Only us techno nuts will see the significance of running Linux on a phone with Google apps. I don't see any more than a small percentage of users really being interested in an open source phone. Most of these will be power users like myself who would be more interested in the Linux factor than Google stuff. Call me a WM6 fanboy, but most of the nice applications these days are based on windows mobile platforms and will probably stay that way even after the linux phone is released.
