Google Phone Rumors
Patents filed for the phone that knows all
by KathrynV Saturday 10-Mar-2007
Rumors have been flying around the internet about the possibility that Google is planning to make a new mobile phone, but no one has been able to confirm whether or not the rumors are true. However, researchers interested in digging deeper found this patent which was filed in 2005 and indicates that a Googlephone has at least been discussed by the company. The latest rumors say that the Google Phone, if it does indeed appear, will be a know-it-all phone which “will take into consideration your past habits and patterns and make suggestions and prepare maps based on your current location, predilections, and the decisions about the past searches.” Head over to Crave Talk for a look at the rumors that led up to this one.

VOIP?

Why doesn't Google start offering VoIP. Since they are so well known I'm sure they would excel.

I don't think I'd buy a mobile phone though just because it's Google's.

Sounds like a computer in a phone

And another example of how stupid patents are these days. Nothing new here, except for the packaging.

A know-it-all phone?

Great, based on my "past habits and patterns", it can call in my posts to forums before I even knew what I wanted to say.

Not yet

I am not yet ready to have my phone habits tracked and have it recommend things to me based on my habits.
If people want that, why are they so upset that the FBI is monitoring their calls?

my mother This Time! Need to call Googlephone about the way it's making calls for me instead of calling who I want!

Foreign Filing?

The researchers found a patent application, not a patent. The thing hasn't even been examined yet.

From public pair, if you look at the file history, you can see that Google initially filed a petition to keep the application from publishing. But later, they rescinded that petition.

So initially it looks like they didn't want anyone to know about the patent application, but then changed their mind since publication is a necessary precursor to filing one or more foreign patent application.

Possibly they want to have the ability to file in those countries in which all the major cell phone manufacturers are headquartered.

Maybe they do want to take over the world!

oops, just checked. They did file a PCT application.

Just as a side note, this patent application is related to an earlier application that was filed in 2004.
