And Android Developer Challenge is still underway
(old news - 10:34AM Thursday Jan 31 2008)
tags: business · wireless · hardware · rumor · Google
There are rumors circulating that Google has partnered with Dell to create the first Android phone. It is believed by some that the phone will be revealed at the 3GSM conference in Barcelona next month. However, industry experts argue that the rumor is likely to be false. Google has designed Android to be a platform for development with multiple companies; partnering solely with Dell on the hardware would run counter to this plan as well as to Google’s history of partnerships.

As these rumors continue to make their way around the web, Google has announced that they are extending the deadline for developers to submit applications to the Android Development Contest. It is unclear whether this is because the new and improved SDK is to be released soon, because they didn’t receive enough submissions in the first go-around or due to some combination of issues.

Where is the reference?

"According to reports, Google is currently working with Dell to create the first Android mobile phone, bringing back the rumors that the Gphone is on the way."

The 'partnered with Dell' link above points to a blog which contains absolutely no real information at all. No references or even a source.

It's as silly as me saying "according to reports, BroadbandReports.com is currently working with AT&T to bring free high speed internet to Maine".

But the 1st link to the story above does have a link to another source that isn't a blog:

Re: Where is the reference?

True, but "senior industry sources" is not much better...although at least they don't sound like they are making it up, and are a legitimate trade rag who might actually have senior industry sources.

Just getting a bit weary of the self-appointed editors and the information vacuum they create. Thanks for the opportunity to vent, T.

Engagdets says this, "Stick this one firmly in the rumor category, since all the verbiage that's been thrown around about this story still traces back to one single source: a slightly ill-informed article done up in MarketingWeek in the UK."
I don't think this one is bloody likely.

Not to mention Dell doesn't actually make anything. They assemble pre-fabs. Dell might be branding and selling the phone with Google.

Re: Where is the reference?

Dell would be a good distributor channel though, with all of their business accounts especially.

Dell/Google deal could be true; just not exclusive

Just because Google might do a deal with Dell for an Android phone doesn't mean it is an EXCLUSIVE deal. So those who think it unlikely based on some exclusive contract could be wrong.

Re: Dell/Google deal could be true; just not exclusive

I think that is the most likely truth. Would make sense for Dell to bring out a phone on this platform, and somehow I doubt google is going to go exclusive, it really does not fit there style.
