Google Phone Talk Is Back
Do you want an ad-supported mobile web?

The Google phone rumors are back. Google has apparently developed a prototype cell phone which they say will bring Google Search and Google Aps to the mobile community, offering better web browsing than “current products” (a not-so-subtle threat to the iPhone). The Google phone is supposed to be available within a year and reports say that Google “plans to offer consumers free subscriptions by bundling advertisements with its search engine, e-mail and Web browser software applications”. Since it’ll be ad-supported, it should be low on cost but high on hassle.

Ads on my cellphone - no thanks

The octopus that is Google is sending its tentacles in to another field. Can we get an adblock add-on from Mozilla for the gPhone??

"The average adult who can afford a cell phone is not going to want to listen to ads. So this is mainly for teenagers, twenty-somethings, high schoolers or people who can't afford a phone," said Kagan.

Re: Ads on my cellphone - no thanks

Based on Google's request that the new spectrum allow devices that can be loaded with any applications the consumer wants to add, and that the same will be true with a Google phone, I would say we can reasonably expect to see and AdMuncher/AdBlock show up.

I'd much rather fork out $50 per month for an ad-free cell plan than have ads on my cell phone. If they just displayed on the screen it would be fine, but I imagine they will be audiable as well, such as before (or even during!) a call.

Re: Ads on my cellphone - no thanks

As much as ads on a cell phone sounds unpleasing, I'd take it anyday from shelling out $50 per month. But then again you may have another income than me. I am a soon-to-be college student working a part-time and income is limited.

See TCH's above quote from the article. You're exactly the target market.

I agree 100%...

Google is God if they do this.

Google is pretty smart about their ad business. I'd be shocked if they tried the audible ads method. Many a focus group would find that VERY displeasing. Ads will be displayed on the screen, and they will be able to target them geographically. So if a store nearby is running a sale, an ad will occupy the top banner of your phone telling you there's a store nearby with a sale going on. If ads are annoying they can have negative effects, which the people paying for them know, and google knows as well.

GrandCentral

I wonder if Google has plans to integrate its newly purchased GrandCentral service into this phone? hmmm..;)

It's almost like they have a strategic plan that they are following.

Google isn't stupid

When Gmail was coming out everyone screamed about the ads and at Google for "reading" our email. Then everyone shut up because the ads were discrete and people mostly stopped worrying about computers reading your email since real people do it anyway.

Don't dismiss Google so fast....

Google Search? On da cell?

YAWN! :-\
Uhm, even my $20 cell can pull Google to the screen...
Actually, I can pull almost anything to the screen.
Yeah it's tiny, but still... it was only $19.99!

Yeah, OpenWave browser on this thing... but $20! No bills, it's paid-for!

Yeah, BBR too!
Camera is having a hard time picking items to focus on, sorry!

EDIT: Oh yeah, it even makes crystal-clear phonecalls! Go figure, huh?

Dont like ads...

...but I'd take them if it made the mobile internet free. Problem is we're going to get ads AND the $30 a month cost anyway.

Re: Dont like ads...

$30 a month with ad's is better than the Canada plan where you are afraid to use it because you might accidentalkly leave it connected and have to sell your car to pay the bill.

Ads on a cell phone?

That could get really annoying, they probably take up the whole screen.

@comcast.net

?

I like google search and youtube, I don't use gmail or their IM product ..... I'm not sure a phone would be a good idea, sometimes you see companies try to please the investors so much that they lose sight of what the do best.

Audible ads. . .

Are downright annoying and some sites load the same audio"banner" click after click. like that annoying ipod nano one.
I for one wouldn't mind the ads if the service was totally free(no limit on minutes, free long distance within USA and canada) you just buy the phone.
