Re: Currently where I'm livingOne analyst said that KC metro was selected because Sprint, ATT and UUNET/Worldcomm's internet backbones mostly converge into KC and they have more engineers per cap than any metro. I could see video streaming services like Amazon and Netflix setting up data centers there. Any company that needs tons of bandwidth will probably at least consider KC as a top 5. A big deal for KC.
|
| | | |
Re: Currently where I'm livingAs opposed to where they are now, where bandwidth is not a problem?

Re: Currently where I'm livingI wonder if this is a precursor to Google buying Sprint, which is based in KC metro. So is Garmin.

Re: Currently where I'm livingThis is only in KCK though not KCMO or Johnson County, KS. It's in the DOT and who the hell wants to live in the DOT? Not very many people who live in the DOT can probably even afford this. Wyandotte county is the brown eye of the metro area. Well one of them anyway.

KC, Lee's summit, Overland park is like the crossroads of backbone fiber is the US. That, realitively low construction cost, and easy access to burnt ends make KC a go to place.

Re: Currently where I'm livingI used to live there if I moved back there I could most likely pick up the connection. One problem is high rent and high utilities which I cant afford Thats why I moved here 4 years ago. The connection isn't worth the stress.

Why would Amazon and Netflix need to locate datacenters there?
Netflix doesn't even run datacenters, they farm out their server and bandwidth needs to other companies like Akamai, Level(3), and Limelight. So that their streaming service is closer to their customers, and thus faster.
Amazon does the same thing with their cloud service being spread all over the country, putting their data closer to their customers.
I see no reason for them to locate anything in Kansas City other than maybe getting a CDN in the area so they are closer to new Google highspeed fiber customers.

Ha lucky you!
To bad it was not in Canada's east where it would crush since all ISPs have pathetic limits with insane costs. UBB would have made many many people change providers fast not to mention speeds that are not congested to nothing during peak hours or throttling.
|
| | |

Re: Currently living in Kansas CityThe more I read about this, it's not just about a big pipe. Google is building a framework for future internet applications and chose a city to test it... a high speed network to the home is just one piece of the puzzle. It's really about future Google services on high speed community networks, not just about the pipe.
It's also about hospitals connecting to the home - a major hospital in KC is tied to the project. Cerner is based in KC, the largest developer of medical software. Already mentioned KC has Sprint, Garmin and a bunch of internet backbones that converge into KC.
Something smells like Google buying Sprint.

Re: Currently living in Kansas CityMore good news for KC. Very is building a 100Gb backbone and KC will be one of the segments. They are also doing Chicago to NYC. A KC to Chicaga link would make sense for next rollout. » news.cnet.com/8301-11386 ··· 1_3-0-20

I live in KCMO, so this is both good and sucks. Hopefully they will expand it over to Overland Park or this side. Though my company (Cerner) is building a brand new office building at the Legends in KCK right next to the Kansas City Sporting stadium (which we own). Hopefully I get moved out there

Almost certainly it will be better than TWC. Slime Warner along with ATT sit on their behinds collecting money while not really rolling out their next generation services.

Obviously. Generally, I have had good service with TWC. However, their push for anti municipal broadband is nonsense here in NC. Time to leave them in the dust too.

Google doesn't want to be an ISP...For now but if they could find a way to do it in an efficient and extremely profitable way.... I don't doubt that they won't jump at that chance. However, I am glad to hear that they are going full speed ahead with their fiber project.

Other ISPs......have got to be #hitting themselves - especially if Google does eventually become an ISP.
I kind of wonder how much they will charge for the service, though. If they really want 500,000 subscribers or more, they'll have to price competitively.
On another note, I'm glad that I'll likely be working in Kansas City after graduation from college.

LOL! Like At&t is going to allow it...» Municipal ReportFiber optics to only one community? I've heard that story before... Either Google will be in court for some dumb reason facing off against At&t and TW or those two will just buy out the state legislature and make it illegal for any company (or subsidiary) that rhymes with "oogle" from building anything in the state.

Google in CellPhone MarketThere were all kinds of rumors, like Google not making it's own cellphone. Android is here. I wonder what other expansion plans Google has. Maybe develop a means to manage the mega fast network? Dumb terminals connected to local Google cloud? Possibilities seem endless

Re: Something I'll Never See!Living in Canada isn't that bad. I'm with Telus and at least they don't harp on you if you go over, and so far no overage charges. Its listed on the site, but they don't care if you go over, just so long as you don't go over by hundred gigabyte++. Soft cap is 80-100gb, so pushing 150-175gb doesn't cause problems. I'll admit we need better upload speed though. I have a 15/1mbit connection (which is extremely consistent at 13.5mbit/850kbit). In the cities Telus is already rolling out VDSL2 equipment for 25mbit/2mbit connections (which faster speeds to come), But being that I live in a dinky small town a couple hours away from a major city means we'll probably be last to upgrade. Just got ADSL2+ earlier last year, so that was nice to go from 3mbit/1mbit to 15mbit/1mbit. Western Canada isn't as bad as Eastern Canada. Go Telus!
|
| | |
Re: Something I'll Never See!I guess I was referring to Eastern Canada since that's where I hear all the complaints coming from. 15/1 isn't bad at all.

Google fiber the end of it's users privacy? This is the only drawback having Google now deploy their own network. An ISP sees and knows everything about their users. What an ISP does or doesn't do with that information is key though. Considering Google's current privacy policy on every Google service is pretty shaddy compared to others in the industry this has got to be a concern.

Getting my popcorn and soda ready.I'm sure this is going to be quite the show. I want to see what the other companies are going to do in reaction to this. Millions upon millions in lobbying efforts to prevent or slow down this fiber? Or maybe an astroturf group that'll come out of nowhere stating they don't want it? Threaten to pull out of the state to remove jobs (and lobbying money)? The possibilities are endless...
