Google Purchases DoubleClick for $3.1 Billion
Plans for internet ad growth

CNNMoney.com has reported that “search engine leader Google is buying privately held DoubleClick, a top digital marketing services firm, for $3.1 billion.” That price is three times what DoubleClick was worth just two short years ago when it was bought by current owners, private equity firm Hellman & Friedman. The price tag should be worth the cost to Google which will be using the acquisition to improve its display advertising.

Actually, I have it from a reliable source he's got a substantial stake in the privately held DoubleClick. He couldn't say anything prior because of the NDA.

But now that it's official, he can get one of those fancy LCD monitors. »Home Office

He's just waiting for the check to clear.

Adsense

Will they be replacing all the annoying doubleclick ads with adsense ones?

NO. This is Google's way of getting in to the "Display Ad" business instead of the "search result ads" business. Doubleclick has a lot of clout with all the ad agencies that place these doubleclick ads.

But I think that they may be getting in to bad public relations here, because many users, me included, use ad-blocking software. And doubleclick is #1 on the list for blocking by every single version of ad blocking software out there. They just paid a whole lot of money to potentially not be seen by a lot of people.

Of course I use the Firefox "Adblock Plus" add-on, so I don't see any Google ads either.

Here is another take on why this deal might not be good for Google:
»blogs.business2.com/utilitybelt/···dou.html
But I've got another gut feeling about this move: It could actually be bad for Google.

On paper this is a great thing (though some might disagree given the $3 billion price tag), but it's not the price that bothers me. DoubleClick has a lot of mainstream media clients, including newspapers like The Wall Street Journal (DJ) and the New York Times Company (NYT), who might feel unnerved that so much of their online revenue will now be filtered through Google. They might just rush more eagerly into the arms of Google rivals like Yahoo, which is reportedly negotiating an ad deal with newspaper giant McClatchy (MNI) even now.

With luck, Google will buy Akmai, too, then I'll only have to forbid one domain rather than having to block "googleanalytics", "doubleclick" and "akmai" on the different sites.

Tracking Cookies?

Will this end the tracking cookies from doubleclick? I get tired of seeing a bunch of tracking cookies from doubleclick when I do a scan.

Wow

I guess that business must be worth a hell of a lot of money if Google is willing to spend that much. That, and they have 11 BILLION in cash, I guess less now, that they have to put to use. Too bad they can't just use some of it to make a GoogleNet to my house!

They Do!

Didn't you read about the Google TISP service (beta) launched April 01? You can have GoogleNet Now! Just sign up and wait for the install kit to arrive.

Sheesh. You have to tell some people everything!

Nothing but a store front.

Google has turned from a great search engine into nothing more than a shopping service. And from what I have read it seems the more you pay, or manipulate the system, the closer you are to number 1 on a search list.

Ads are easy to block/ignore but what I really hate is how spammers and other junk sites tend to get to the top of the search results.

Is That You, Darth Google?

So much for the great do no harm mantra Google debuted with. The more money they make, the more *evil* they become. Does anyone remember what Doubleclick actually is? It is a slightly reformed purveyor of spyware/malware. And had they not been stopped in their tracks several years prior via regulation by lawsuit, they would have no doubt beaten Sony to the punch with use of rootkits.

Google is starting to remind me of Anakin Skywalker. He started out altruistic and the more he saw of the world, the more he wanted and the more evil he became. Only a matter of time before Google transforms into its own version of Darth.

Uh yeah, I'm sure. Google may support NN (for now), but that can change just as easily and quickly as the wind blows. How does NN even enter into this discussion. NN has absolutely nothing to do with Google's acquistion of Doubleclick.

Consolidation?

Google's purchases seem to be part of a calculated plan to become the source of advertising, market and content on the net.

Google's corporate mantra has always favored free content financed by advertising. These recent purchases seem a logical extension of the mantra. Is that a good or bad thing? Who knows.

No DoubleClick for Microsoft

Wasn't there just a news story a few days back about how Microsoft was looking to buy DoubleClick to augment their ad services? This buy could be a defensive move to keep Microsoft's hands off of the ad network. (With the side benefit of bulking up the AdSense network.)
