If true, it could be good for the VoIP industry
(old news - 05:40PM Friday Apr 18 2008)
tags: business · VoIP · rumor · Google
Every so often, a rumor starts going around that Google will be purchasing Skype. That rumor is back in action again today; as usual, Skype has refused to comment on the rumor. Others are happy to speculate about it, though, and there have been some interesting arguments provided as to why it’s an acquisition that makes sense for the VoIP industry. The short summation of those arguments is that Skype has the potential to lead the VoIP industry, having been a central player in computer voice communications for years, but that it needs to turn a bigger profit in order to stay in business. An acquisition by Google would give Skype the potential to earn ad-based revenue and start making some real money. For its part, Skype has outlasted a lot of rumors about its demise, including a recent surge in traffic after predictions that the company would disappear in 2008.

Rumors seem to come only from Rich Tehrani ...

... the author of this linked news item.

Maybe he is just trying to goose interest because he hyped Skype as being this good deal for eBay. And we all know how that worked out. Maybe he hopes Google will salvage his rep.

Great idea

I think this would be a great opportunity for both Google and Skype. Skype is a great application to communicate with friends and family all over the world. Also, since Google is the #1 search engine, this will potentially accelerate Skype towards the mainstream.

Skype? Google? Not a Match

Sorry, but until Skype works standalone on a terminal adapter, not requiring a PC or proprietary hardware, it doesn't matter who owns them.

Re: Skype? Google? Not a Match

The part you're failing to see is that Google has the mean$$$ to make that happen. I use Skype on a daily basis and personally think that if this becomes more than a rumor it would be a good thing. Just think about it, with the Ad revenue, Skype In or Out can possibly become cheaper... or free.

Why does Google need Skype?

Why would Google need Skype to enter the VoIP market (well, more than what Google Talk offers)? Google is such that they could probably build their own userbase.

Re: But wait!

They did....but Grand Central by itself doesn't allow you to make calls. It still requires a dialtone at both ends, one for you, one for your end user.

Now if there were some horrifyingly masterful meshing of GrandCentral and Skype....competitors will fall.
