Google TV Will Arrive This Fall
Sony, Logitech and Dish all likely launch partners
Back in May Google unveiled Google TV, their Android-based platform they hope to embed in set tops, TVs, and dedicated boxes the world over so they can A, finally mainstream Internet use in the living room and B suck up the billions in potential ad dollars this market could represent. Google CEO Eric Schmidt took a break from making creepy Orwellian statements this week to note that Google TV will be launching this fall in the United States, with worldwide deployment next year. Based on existing agreements and trials, it should first show up embedded in Sony TVs, a dedicated Logitech OTT video box, and possibly integrated into Dish Network set tops.

I'm guessing Netflix will be coming once Netflix creates an Android client (which they're rumored to be working on now). Netflix is trying to get onto as many devices as possible, and Google TV is trying to be as functional as possible, it would be a win-win for everybody.

Re: Netflix

Just saying if I had the choice between Google and Apple, Apple would win because of the Netflix intergration. As of right now Netflix is the king of legal video streaming.

Re: Netflix

the king only due to they pay the extortion fee to the MPAA for each movie. That is why they're delayed so much and will keep getting that way. As far as Apple's product; it will be a hit. Their fanboys will buy it and it will be the next best Apple product since slice bread came out as with all of their products.

RedBox hasn't even designed their streaming system yet and you're already in favor of NetFlix being tied in. I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. Especially since RedBox/CoinStar has plenty of $$$$ to really do business with NF.

Extortion? Content costs money, plain and simple. Their content, their terms.

I've been in the beta for months

It's a great service. Beta is a little choppy on the Android, but I think it's a 3g thing. It's fine on wireless. I've handed out invites whenever I could.

Not for my TV. That's wireless/ethernet. On the android though, it's 3g/wireless like every other app.

It's been great for me too, even with my *ancient* Android phone.

no cablecard or tru2way support = dead in the water

most people want to replace their crappy and slow cablebox with a dvr that does all of this stuff..... not add another box inbetween that will make it even slower to change the channels.

It is a method of removing the cable box, and the service. Tru2way was dead before arrival.

Really? Show me how you get nickelodeon for the kids, Mad Men for the wife, and Monday Night Football for me. Until then, it's no replacement for MOST (e.g. not the posters here) TV viewers.

A lot of the content you mention is available online, legally. My point is its not trying to be a cable box replacement or a fancier DVR (a la TiVo), its meant as a supplement or for quite a few, an alternative.

Mad Men is available via iTunes and Amazon. If you visit the AMC TV web site, they will give you a list of all available sources.

Football? No clue.

The first Sony XBR TV supported CableCard. It would be great if Sony brought Cablecard support back with the new model. With Android it would be a killer app.

LG + Plex: A Better Approach

Frankly I think the recent announcement by LG that their upcoming 2011 TVs and Blu Ray players would include Plex is much more interesting than the Google TV plans.

With an app like Plex or Boxee built in, you'd have full access to Netflix and most of the key video content on the web.

Google TV is pretty lightweight and far behind Plex and Boxee now. The TV makers appear to be paying more attention to the Google brand than the video content. A big mistake.

Re: LG + Plex: A Better Approach

It really depends on whether Google TV will be modular in a similar fashion as to what Plex is. If so, Google TV will be expandable to available content, just as Plex has been over the last couple of years. The real trick for Google will be to minimize the intrusiveness of its ads. Right now Plex introduces no additional advertisements beyond what the content distributors deliver. Much more than that may not be received well by consumers.

I'm wondering how what you mention is different in any way from google tv's offering?

Full access to netflix, amazon vod, pandora, all web content, etc

What more is offered on the plex or boxee?

Re: what about a software release?

Doesn't appear to be coming any time soon. Not too sure why Google has to work hard to release the code...unless it doesn't belong to Google.
said by google.com :

Q. Can I download Google TV? When will it be open sourced?
A. No, Google TV is only available pre-installed on Sony TVs and blu-ray players, as well as Logitech companion boxes. We are working hard to open source the code for the Google TV project, and hope to release the source code next year.

Not me, sorry...

With Google's recent anti-consumer turnaround, I'm weening myself off of Google's services. That means, I'm avoiding Google serivices and dropping development for Google Maps for all of my clients - quite a few Fortune 500s and they support this. I'll be using Google for what they've done best - search.

Why still use google for search? Shouldn't you boycott that since they make the most money off the ads on google?

Ever use gmail? Youtube? Chrome? Android?

Good luck trying to avoid google.

Canadians Miss out again

"with worldwide deployment next year", ya we'll see if that includes Canada. No one, other than the stupid providers already blessed to be able to provide content in canada... seems to be able to come to any agreement to carry content here. Our CRTC seems to know whats good for us here in Canada and will not allow these other options here.
I guess they wouldn't want to expose the poor Canadian people to the content in the USA.
Its really time for the CRTC to wake up. We're tired of hearing of all these other options for content (Hulu, Netflix etc...) and then finding out "this content can't be accessed outside the United States) Its pathetic!

Boxee Box

I'm more excited for the release of Boxee Box rather than Google TV. Boxee is designed to replace cable TV (and a monthly bill) rather than accommodate cable TV.

The only bad thing is that the Boxee Box will not play alot of my HD content. I have a few hundred BD ISOs I use from the BD titles I own. Then add the funky shape of the boxee box. If it was shaped like a nice rectangle that would be ideal, but the shape they chose only wastes space.

?

Does this work over broadband? Or what? i'm confused as to how this will function

Edit: Ah nvm.. Have to have broadband to use.. With lack of deployment and upcoming caps.. What is the point of these features? I"m not gonna pay what i'm guessing will be 5 dollars per gigabyte to download shows that i can get passively through satellite for one cost.. And if satellite gets on the per show band wagon, screw it.. I'll go without..

mobile data in North America

Generally speaking, mobile data in North America is not at a point where we can start affordably watching television programming on these devices. Were a ways away yet from cell-co's beefing up data packages to enable this kind of content on a regular basis. Right now, its more of a "our network can do it" kind of state.

What will it deliver ?

TV service consists of content and delivery.

Google may be able to deliver. But until it announces deals with major production companies and/or TV networks, it won't have much to deliver on its fancy service.

Apple just unveiled its scaled down AppleTV with TV program rentals for $0.99. But only ABC and Fox agreed. No NBC or CBS programming available.

And Apple will then have to negotiate in Canada with the rights holders to be able to offer the service. When Global and/or CTV buy exclusive rights to air a US program in canada, they really mean it and will prevent any other company from making that content available over the internet. (this has nothing to do with CRTC BTW).

Google will have to do th same negotiations everywhere, UNLESS IT STARTS TO FUND ITS OWN PROGRAMMING. And Google might have the money/clout to do that. If it becomes the rights holder for a programme, it can have its own worldwide distribution rights and use its content delivery paltform.

And if Google were to produce a real hit, it would provide a lot of motivation for people to buy Google enabled boxes to watch that program.

Google TV = Internet Collapse?

Remember all those bit-torrent users complaining about being throttled by their ISP's?

Imagine what will happen when everyone starts watching TV over the internet... Not a problem as long as you will be willing to pay $5 or $10 per gig.

Say goodbye to the fast, cheap and flawless internet. Hmmm, toll roads seem to come to mind...

google tv is a killer app

Google TV is a genre buster service, especially as provided by logitech. the Logitech box is going to make it possible to browse the web, can provide an overlay to whatever you are watching using the components you already own (for example providing subtitle translation into all the languages available through google translate), and is going to be able to remote control every TV / PVR / DVD / Cable / audio component and satellite box. It will display Android and Chrome, including all the apps and plugins for Android and Chrome. If you think Google TV is just a way to watch youtube videos, then you are vastly underestimating it. Unless they overprice it everyone is going to have to buy it. It doesn't even compete with Boxee box--if you own a Boxee box you will still need Google TV unless either they price it too high or screw it up or if God prevents them from succeeding.
