Google To Patch Nexus One 3G Issue Soon
Testing the fix, should be released 'in the next week or so...'
by Karl Bode Tuesday 26-Jan-2010 tags: coverage · business · wireless · bandwidth
Google has supposedly been looking into why many Nexus One users have been struggling with poor 3G coverage on the device, and has two answers for you. One of them is something you already knew: the device uses T-Mobile's network, which, while improving quickly, remains the smallest of the major wireless carriers. Posts to the Google suport forum indicate that the other major culprit is a software glitch. "Our engineers have uncovered specific cases for which a software fix should improve connectivity to 3G for some users," says a Google employee. "We are testing this fix now, initial results are positive, and if everything progresses as planned, we will provide an over-the-air software update to your phone in the next week or so."

"some users"?

"...a software fix should improve connectivity to 3G for some users"...

What about the other users? Does that indicate that the SW glitch is not the only reason?

It means that not ALL users were experiencing the problem. So the fix will only help those users who were seeing the problem.

the software was only an issue on certain firmwares. I believe only one of the 3 release firmwares.

Small network

When is T-mobile going to build a real network outside of the cities AND in the cities?

when physics changes and it doesn't cost them 3x as much to cover an area with 1700/1900 as it does for verizon to cover it with 850/700.

Or maybe when demographics change, and when more than 95% of people no longer lives in cities.

If either of those happens, maybe then it would be a "smart" business decision to build out in Nowhere, ID. Until then, join the rest of us with ATT, TMO, or Sprint, and get used to roaming.

Verizon wouldn't have the coverage it has today if it weren't for the mandatory buildout requirements on 800 mhz licenses. I believe an 800 license has a 75% of the area buildout requirement. PCS/1900 has a 75% of the population buildout requirement. Cover the highways and downtowns, and your done with PCS. You do need less towers with 800 than with 1900, but you can bet that if 1900 licenses had a 75% buildout requirement, it would have been built out. The profitability of the mobile phone market is too strong.

Never. Not profitable. Aslong as 90% of calls connect, TM's customers will tolerate TM because of TM's lower prices compared to ATT/VZ.

Not many problems here..

On day 1 I had a problem connecting to the 3G network for the first time. Almost 3 weeks later, I have no other network issues to speak of. And luckily no customer service issues.

I'm an iPhone ex-pat and I can honestly say that my 3G experience on T-Mobile has been better overall.

My Nexus One experience has been very good so far...

Re: Not many problems here..

Tmobile's california and new york city network was a joint venture with Cingular before Cingular bought ATT and got access to ATT's 800 network. Cingular made sure that Tmobile didn't cheapen out on expansion/building out. So TM NYC and TM CA are well built networks unlike other areas of TM.

Howsa Boutsa Link?

Where is the link to this Google support forum discussing this software fix? The link in the article is not correct.

My buddy just sent me photo of his new Nexus One about 20 minutes ago, on his Blackberry. The Nexus is still charging.

Re: Howsa Boutsa Link?

It sounds like another case of Google blaming their mistakes on someone else, like they did last week to Microsoft, when they blamed IE for hackers getting into their system and it was actually the backdoor they built into Gmail so law enforcement could have easy access to peoples email that was exploited.

"robust t-mobile 3g network" = 94,300 results.

"robust at&t 3g network" = 50,100 results.

Who is more robust? I'll give you a hint, NOT AT&T.

It figures karl would take a swipe at T-Mobile

I guess Karl couldn't resist taking a swipe at T-Mobile even though the problem is not with T-Mobile coverage.

It's not the network

You have 2 phones next to each other. Eg. A G1 and Nexus 1

The G1 has 3G and the Nexus 1 has edge.

Sounds like a hardware/software problem. You guys should no better than that come on. It's not ATT LOL

I love the blame game...

It is always easier to blame someone else for the phone's problems than it is to take the blame onto yourself...sounds to me it wasnt fully tested before being deployed.

Fix coming for Nexus One this week + multi-touch for all

Google's just outed a very, very significant update to the Nexus One that includes Google Goggles on board and a re-upped version of Google Maps that includes suggestions and a dedicated night mode. Much more significantly, though, they've capitulated and enabled multitouch in Browser, Gallery, and Maps -- great news and a big win for the Android community at large. Finally, there are some 3G improvements in there
