Google Unveils Free Wireless Broadband
'Dark porcelain' project: free broadband routed via plumbing...
by Karl Bode Sunday 01-Apr-2007 tags: business · wireless
Tipped by Dee Bee See Profile
We've always said that rumors of Google becoming a national broadband ISP would eventually be proven true -- and now they have. Google tomorrow will officially launch the beta of their "Dark Porcelain" project: free wireless broadband for the masses that will be routed through home plumbing. According to the project FAQ, the service will come in three tiers (not all of them free), with speeds eventually as high as 32Mbps. We'll note there's some very impressive upstream speeds being planned for this project. That's surprising, given plumbing-based-broadband's reputation as an interference-prone niche solution for those who don't get decent fiber.

"I couldn't be more excited about, and am only slightly grossed out by, this remarkable new product," says Marissa Mayer, Google's Vice President of Search Products and User Experience. "I firmly believe TiSP will be a breakthrough product, particularly for those users who, like Larry himself, do much of their best thinking in the bathroom." The company also details how installations will work during the beta, here.

The 2000 flushes guy is the network admin. He uses a plunger when the network gets congested and theres lots of packet loss.

Google going to rollout broadband plumbing to public spaces

Google is also going to rollout plumbing broadband to public spaces around the cities for those who don't have plumbing at home(Arkansas, Georgia, & New Orleans are 1st on the list). Here is a photo of Google's staging ground for the new outdoor broadband plumbing rollout:

Can I use this service when I'm away from home?
Sorry, but no -- TiSP is not available outside the home at this time. We are, however, currently developing a mobile feature called TiSP on the Run (TiSPOTR), which we expect to make available in the near future.

They're also going to route bandwidth through actual feces running through the streets in the less sanitary, more noxious states in the union.

New Jersey, of course, is #1 on the list...

Google Unveils Free Wireless Broadband

The poop is getting real deep here. I think this could be a huge government conspiracy.

But what about the environment?

Not a problem. Gmail Paper is made out of 96% post-consumer organic soybean sputum, and thus, actually helps the environment.

You know this might really work !

I am buying my own fiber to flush down the pipe I just need an isp to connect to. Image that no need for truck roll outs to deploy to your house. The only thing I have a problem with is that the fiber is up my butt while im on the crapper and (crap) is getting all over the fiber node. Hmm, got be another portal to the sewer line but very innovative.

I think we will realy see this deployed long before Broadband over power line. I am all for this I will sign up for the service as long as I don't have to sign a contract because if I don't like the quality of the connection or plumbing then I will cancel.

Will there be limits on the use of this system? What if you, umm, err, uhhh, use too much, umm, err, upload? What if the system is busy and you really need to, umm, upload a lot? What then?
