Google Unveils New Google Voice iPhone App
While the real Google Voice app remains in Apple/AT&T purgatory
by Karl Bode Tuesday 26-Jan-2010 tags: business · wireless · alternatives · VoIP · content
In July of last year, the FCC sent letters to Apple, AT&T, and Google exploring why Apple had banned the Google Voice App. In response, AT&T insisted they had nothing to do with the block, while Apple claimed the application wasn't blocked -- it just, uh, hadn't been approved yet. As more data emerged, it became clear that Apple rejected the app because they "believed the application duplicated the core dialer functionality of the iPhone." We're now still well into 2010, and the app remains blocked. However, Google today released a new version of the application, according to Reuters:

Google already had a version of Google Voice available through mobile Web browsers. But Google described the new version of Google Voice as a "Web app," noting that it is much more interactive than the previous browser-based version of the service, with the ability to listen to voice mails directly from within the browser and to dial phone numbers on an interactive on-screen keypad.

iPhone, Palm Pre or Android users (anybody with an html5-capable phone) eager to give the upgraded service a try can head to this URL, then tell us what you think in our comment section below.

Well....?

What I want to know is when can we start using that to actually make calls? I tried the new interface and tried making a call. I still needed to use my regular voice service for the call to go through.

You will always use your regular voice service unless you connect to GV via SIP.

The Google Voice switch calls you back on your cell phone; then connects to the party you want to talk to; and in effect sets up a conference call thru their switch. So it still costs you minutes on your cellphone plan.

The SMS feature, however, does bypass your cellphone companies text msging function. So you can do text msgs without a text msg plan from AT&T - saving you money there.

And their are some ways to set up voicemail so that all your voicemails go to Google Voice and their voice to text transcriber. You can read about the Google Voice features here:

Re: Well....?

The only problem is that the Safari browser can't do push notifications like the Google Mobile app can. That makes a GV wweb app kinda tough to be a true SMS replacement.

Re: Well....?

You can set up GV to send you an email when you get a text. If you have a Yahoo or other push enabled account this will give you an instant notification, but I agree it's less than ideal.

You can also set up GV to send a SMS to your phone when you receive a SMS at GV, but that defeats the purpose if you are trying to save money.

Their forward to e-mail solution works pretty much the same if you have push e-mail. Responding to the e-mail sends the response back as an SMS.

Maybe if/when they integrate GizmoCall functionality into Google Talk... that'd be nice.

There is Gizmo capability now available with Google Voice:

Re: Well....?

I know--I already use it (since early GrandCentral days). GizmoCall, though, is a purely browser-based "connection"... doesn't really work all that well call-quality-wise ('cause it's a rather low-bandwidth process), but it's good enough in a pinch... lots of room for improvement.

I think it's odd that there is no official application for google talk or google voice on the windows mobile platform. That being said, windows mobile is the best marketing for every other smartphone OS that is on the market right now.

Just tried it now...

...and while the interface is clean and easy to use, I thought I'd be able to make free calls to land lines which I found I cannot (nor had I tried previously). I did successfully send a couple of text messages and this browser based app will create a short cut to itself on the home page so it looks and acts just like any other app, except that it's in the Safari browser. Very clever Google.

Jailbreak the iphone and spend $1.99 on 3G Unrestrictor. Works like a charm on any iPhone app.

Pretty nice

I wish it was a "real app", but that's easy enough to overcome .. just add it to the home screen as a bookmark and it's pretty much the same thing. Calls work fine, voicemail the same. Not bad.

I am on a 3GS and I can't get the VM to play either out the speakers or the headphones. I press play and nothing happens -- no "data activity" indicator on the bar or anything.

What do you do?

Re: Pretty nice

I've got the 3GS model as well, when I hit play it launches a quicktime type window (similar to the youtube interface) and plays the message by default through the speaker.

If it's not launching, maybe try rebooting the phone? Low on memory or something? Just guessing.

Me too, 3.1.2 (7D11). Does the youtube app work, or have you tried emailing yourself a .mov file and try to open it on the phone? I'm guessing they all use the same basic framework.

Got plugins and javascript turned on in the Safari prefs pane? Maybe try turning on the debug console, see what it spits out at you when you try the google page.

Safari problem on iPod Touch

This definitely looks nicer than before, but it won't work with my iPod Touch. I dial the number, and when I hit the green call button, I get an error:

"Cannot Open Page
Safari cannot open the page because the address is invalid."

Re: Safari problem on iPod Touch

That's probably because the Touch isn't a phone.
The GV page uses the phone to dial the GV number.

That shouldn't be the case as far as I know. It worked just fine with the previous site before they updated. My understanding is that when you select a number to dial with the Google Voice website (certainly true from a PC and was true with the previous mobile site), Google Voice places a call to your phone (whichever number you had defined), and after you pick up, then dials the number you wanted to call. IOW, the mobile device does not need to be a phone.

Has something in this paradigm changed?

Yes for the iPhone, the phone actually dials the GV number which automatically dials the number you enter. So the iPhone shows an outgoing call. I guess the site is mistaking the iTouch for an iPhone.

Interesting that they can cause the phone to dial from Safari. I hope they ressurect the old site for other mobile devices. Or better still, add an option to the new site that will cause GV to dial the call rather than the phone.

roses and chocolates

I've owned & developed for windows mobile, iphone, and have been playing around with android for the past few weeks... some thoughts...

If I were apple, I would be buying Google roses, chocolates and some super-expensive jewelry right now in order to apologize and woo them back into publishing new iphone apps (especially for some of the new labs stuff). I would back this up with a blank check in terms of approving their new apps.

Apple needs google, much much much more than google needs Apple!

Some thoughts :
- Google has already replicated ALL iphone functionality in android (and more). They have a very viable mobile platform with support from at least half a dozen giants in the handset business (motorola, htc, sony-ericcson, etc.). They have devices on every major US carrier right now (and are about to add dozens more in the coming year). They are already co-branding these other "droid" devices, and are even releasing their own "nexus" htc device. Looking at the lineup of (cheap and cool) android smartphones about to be released, I predict market share for android is about to skyrocket.

- Google just acquired admob. They ALREADY have advertising (even on the iphone) nailed! Since this is their primary source of revenue, they would definitely be open to the possibility of pushing new apps for the iphone (if apple allowed it)

- Apple cannot easily replicate google functionality. Google currently supplies maps, voice search, and youtube to iphone users. However basic apps (such as gmail, calendar, talk), and newer more innovative apps (such as voice) have been blocked. The apps that do exist are simple webkit wrappers around a webpage that are slow and don't integrate with anything else on the iphone.

- Apple cannot "easily" replicate any of the really cool newer google labs products that are already on android. They aren't a search engine company, and simply don't have the data to do it.

In android, all of the standard google stuff is seamlessly integrated (search, voice search, maps, gmail, youtube, calendar, contacts, voice, talk etc.) All of the upcoming google labs stuff (goggles, sky, nav, translate etc. etc.) is SUPER cool and customers WILL BEGIN TO NOTICE that it's missing on the iphone! Even right now when I show someone my phone, the android set is way more impressive than my previous iphone. Even other colleagues with iphones are impressed. The new google labs apps are largely responsible!

IMHO, apple needs to start kissing some major Google ass instead of blocking google apps, or risk increasing irrelevance in the smartphone market.

There's only 3 reasons I can think to use it:

1. Free SMS
2. If you want your GV number instead of your phone's number to show up on other people's caller id.
3. Checking GV voicemail.

Other than that, there's really no point.
