Android 6.0 Marshmallow available starting Monday, Oct 5» 9to5google.com/2015/09/2 ··· fficial/Google confirmed that Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be rollout out to users from October 5th, just as previously rumored. As with any new OS update from Google, Nexus devices will be among the first to get Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Those included from October 5th will be the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, 2013s Nexus 7 and the Nexus 9. Older devices will not be receiving the update. While Nexus phones will be the first to have Android 6.0, were expecting an influx of press releases from third party OEMs telling us how soon, or perhaps how late, they will be rolling out Marshmallow to their customers.

Re: Android 6.0 Marshmallow available starting Monday, Oct 5I looked into CyanogenMod when I had my S3 but I was wary of the problems others had with it. Either way you shouldnt have to root yer android phone to get a new OS...

Re: Android 6.0 Marshmallow available starting Monday, Oct 5I've used CM for years, since CM7. I gave Galaxy S3 to a relative who is now running CM12.1 (Android 5.1.1) on it, a 2012 device. CM12.1 works fine, Samsung never released latest Android for it.
Have always rooted every phone/tablet I've had since first getting each - all devices always have latest Android well before the maker releases the latest.

But if your device has a locked boot loader like most devices come with these days, good luck doing that kind of manual update.

I tried CM a few times and there was always stuff that was broken. I started buying GpE (HTC M8 and now M9) and those have gotten updated a couple weeks after the nexus line

That's why I went with the iPhone. Guaranteed software updates regardless of your carrier. Best decision I ever made.

Re: Android 6.0 Marshmallow available starting Monday, Oct 5Yep generally with iPhones it has to be an ancient model to not get updates. My iPhone 5S came with iOS 7 and had 9.01 on it when I traded it for a 6S and it ran just fine. Cant be said for most android devices.

Re: Android 6.0 Marshmallow available starting Monday, Oct 5Well if you stick to Nexus devices, you also get the latest fairly quickly with no delay from carriers - iOS has not advantage on that point. Supposedly Samsung and LG are committing to regular updates but have yet to prove it.
Problem with iOS is that is it much much too simplistic for power users, but obviously has its place for avg joe consumers. I have my phone setup to show a couple dozen pieces of information in a few swipes (via widgets). It would take dozens of taps on iOS and you can't get consolidate view - 3D Touch won't solve that issue.

Re: Android 6.0 Marshmallow available starting Monday, Oct 5I have weather and other kinds of news accessible from the notification drop down shade on iOS. Easy to use.

Re: Android 6.0 Marshmallow available starting Monday, Oct 5Not really the same... Thousands of Android apps allow creating widgets on home screen and can have scrolling lists within home screen like see email, vmail, text, weather, news all next to each other in consolidated view and scroll through them. Can have direct dial icons, hotspot switch on same page. Can build pages based on themes of information. Is countless how it can be configured. I have an iPad but never use it because it's too much tapping and can't set it up the way I want to view information, especially in consolidated view.
iOS definitely has its place and is great for those who don't want to mess with customization, but Android has its place too. And if you stick to Nexus, you also always get latest official updates.

No MicroSD Card, no buyFirst thing I did when I read about the new Nexuses (Nexi?) on another site was Ctrl+F through the page and comments for "SD Card". Bummer that it doesn't have one.
The rest of the specs look cool though, but the lack of a MicroSD Card slot is a deal-breaker to me.

Re: No MicroSD Card, no buySame here, but I after google declared war on them in 4.x in favor of their cloud options I just stopped looking. I am still very happy with my Galaxy S4 running Cyanogen or the Google Play rom depending on my mood. Still upset about shattering the screen on my Asus Zenfone 2.

said by AmericanMan:\ The rest of the specs look cool though, but the lack of a MicroSD Card slot is a deal-breaker to me. I would agere with you that a lack of micro sd is a bummer but its just not so, the bummer is the limited memory it comes with standard. If it started at 32GB and $350 and then a 64GB ($375) or 128GB ($399) option for the 5x no one would care about the lack of Micro SD slot, it would be fine, However 16GB is one step backwards as far as I'm concerned. Id like to upgrade to the 6P however My gripe is no QI charging out the box! ... Ive become very accustomed to that over the last 2 years and all my main locations have QI chargers in place already and I dont want to go back to cords!

Re,This is a DUMB idea from Google. They better off a finance option like the carriers. I don't have $600 I can blow at the drop of a hat. Not to mention they better have a nice insurance like Apple Care on the iPhone 6S if you get it through Apple.

And that is a reason their phones fail. They never set out to change the market like they claimed they would to start off with. If they don't have some device payment option their phones will NEVER take off. Hell they aren't that widely used now as it is. And they're stupid for outsourcing the builds of the phones when they could have had Moto do it before they gutted them and sold everything off but the papers they wanted.

Half the Job is DonePhones being separate of the service providers. This is a great thing for consumers.
All we need now if for the carriers to start competing for customers who can now switch by swapping sim cards.

Re: Half the Job is DoneYou just swapped service provider with Google. Removable battery and SD card went out the window. Things aren't great.
If you want competition, tell verizon to shutdown their CDMA voice network.

I'd rather pay everything up frontHonestly, I'd almost rather save up and spend the $600 for one of these new phones out right than be forced to pay a monthly prorated amount over two years on my cell phone bill. Monthly bills are already expensive as it stands and I don't need another $30 a month tacked on to it on top of the normal service charges. It's basically a way for the carries to have a two year contract without actually having one and I'd be free to switch carriers too. I usually keep a cell phone for a good three to four years anyways, and by that point, I will have gotten my monies worth out of it.

I prefer to buy from the carriersIs there a Google Store in your neighborhood to service the phone if it goes bad, No.
Is there a Verizon or Apple Store nearby, Yes.
With my iPhone if it goes bad I take it to an Apple Store and a half hour later I'm out with a replacement. No waiting for the delivery truck.
Buying from the Verizon store they activate the phone for you, set everything up and transfer everything over. While I'm diving into the online shopping party with Amazon, a smartphone is something I'll buy in person at Verizon. I can probably get a better deal on accessories at Amazon though than VZW store.

Too expensive, and are LTE-made phones any good?> the LTE-made Nexus 5X, and the Huawei-made Nexus 6P
> The 5X starts at $379, the 6P starts at $499.
Too expensive for 16GB, when One Plus phones could be had for so much less.
Besides, I've never heard of LTE making any phones, where is the company based? Is it any good?

LTE Band 12 700mhz t mobileIt looks like both the Motorola Nexus 6 and the new Nexus 6p support LTE 700 mhz band 12 which is on T mobile. But not clear on this. Does anyone know for certain that on t mobile both support band 12. I also assume both will do wifi calling on t mobile as well

They'll work with VerizonThe N5 didn't have Band 13, but the N5X and N6P do. So the phone will work on basically every US carrier at full capacity, with the exception of AT&T WCS, which the N5X doesn't cover but the N6P does.

Not Sold by Carriers?Where did Google say they were not being sold by carriers? I keep reading this story but nobody sources anything but another website with no source. I cant imagine this will be true for long because the iPhone 6s is selling like hot cakes. This seems like a surefire way to tank your sales. Completely idiotic by Google.

No longer controlled introductionAbout the only thing the carriers had going on was to do the equivalent of the electric company selling you all your products that use electricity or the water company selling you all your faucets and toilets.
When you're initially trying to manage network loads and also gather data about variation in loads and usage patterns, this is helpful.
It also streamlined the whole shopping process when there was an initial introduction of technology the government wants and has wanted in the hands of everybody.
Now that it is becoming commonplace to have a mobile device, I can say that at least in the case of my employer, every service that is offered is being moved to software-based platforms.
PBX phone systems are now in the cloud with end users being able to make their smartphones do what was once reserved for desk phones. Business service packages now come with entire point of sale systems that run on tablets and phones. The same packages have optional bundling of things like Microsoft Office in the Cloud, anti-virus solutions, web-based advertising solutions and networking solutions to allow telecommuting.
To me, it looks like the "phone companies" aren't going to be selling phones and cable TV packages are going to be an app in your Smart TV or tablet/phone wirelessly streaming to your TV.
For non-business purposes, I have a feeling a voice and text plan is going to be governed by whose app you pay to have monthly. The data connection for all of it is going to depend on either who you prefer or else the government is just going to take over the infrastructure.
The government operation might end up running like the interstate system and local road systems in the United States:
States maintain internet backbone according to federal standards, along with state highways. Rural wireless or wireline infrastructure might be handled by the county or state. Municipal infrastructure might be handled by cities.
One thing is for sure, separating hardware from service providers is about like separating vehicle purchases from the highway department. It doesn't leave much for service providers to do besides some monthly software-based services and infrastructure.
It is hard to tell how much things will continue to bill based on data usage. Every other utility in the U.S. is billed based on a percentage of your income that goes to road maintenance, or is billed by usage in road rolls or water used or electricity or gas consumed.
The only exception is trash pickup, where you are given a set limit on how much can be picked up, type and size. Exceptions can be made, for an additional fee.
I can't see them making it unlimited for everybody and charging a flat rate that is the same everywhere. I also can't see them telling a town of 200 addresses in rural Kansas that it is going to need to pay upkeep costs for fiber, copper and cellphone tower via the town's tax revenue.
More political showboating is in the works for this, to be sure.

WiFi Calling May Be LackingSince these are carrier unlocked phones, I have yet to see any carrier with WiFi calling offer the service on such handsets. If I could buy any Nexus and have WiFi calling functionality on Sprint/T-Mobile, these would certainly be scoops.
