Google Unveils Provo Google Fiber Pricing

Google has released an update, on their plans for Google Fiber in Provo Utah. After buying the existing $39 billion iProvo network for all of $1 (albeit with strict build out conditions), Google has a bit of a leg up on the build out compared to other launch locations like Kansas City and Austin -- and hopes to have the first Provo Google Fiber connected before the end of the year. Google says they're working to get the first Provo customer signed up before the end of the year. According to the company, Google Fiber pricing in Provo will mirror the pricing we've already seen elsewhere:

quote:
Free Internet. Get today’s basic broadband speeds (up to 5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps upload) for free for at least the next seven years.

Gigabit Internet. Connect to the web at speeds up to 100 times faster than basic broadband (up to 1 Gbps download and upload) for $70/month.

Gigabit Internet + TV. Get 100 times faster Internet plus hundreds of HD channels. Record up to 8 shows at once and store up to 500 hours of HD content on your Storage Box for $120/month.
The company states that customers on the existing Veracity network in Provo will need to tack on a $30 construction fee to connect. As we exclusively noted yesterday, Comcast has already started offering new triple play promotions including 105 Mbps broadband and home security options.

I'm Happy for Provo

It is good to here that Google's fiberhoods are progressing.

Can't wait to hear announcments like that for Austin.

If it reaches that far. Agreements don't mean services will happen let alone everywhere in those areas they "plan" to service.

Re: I'm Happy for Provo

Given Kansas City's progress the fiberhoods will do nothing but expand.

Google is already mapping out fiber and drops to 4 new fiberhoods here in KC that were previously unannounced until about 1 month ago with the other fiber hoods moving right along.

Given Time Warner's absolutely abysmal track record in KC, gaining market share is relatively easy for Google at the moment. Time Warner knows they were so bad they are running an "Were better now" advertising campaign.

They have nothing to do but expand. If the progress on their website is even remotely accurate, then they are doing one of the slowest build outs in history. Two and a half years after it is announced and the majority of the city is still listed as planned.

Slow?

They are building out as fast as their contractors can lay fiber. There are currently 4 contractors working and they are all on overtime/rush schedule from what I understand

I think you underestimate what is involved in the Google fiber project.

Re: I'm Happy for Provo

I really don't think I am. They are overbuilding in an area where they have zero of their own existing infrastructure to worry about and strong cooperation from the city. For the most part they get to choose if they deploy above ground or below ground with free reign to deploy pretty much wherever they wish and have unparallelled cash to get the job done. Most companies can only dream about having those conditions and at the end of the day still get the job done in less time.

If you are going to deploy a cutting edge product and want to shame the incumbents you should actually get the product on the market to more than a small area after two and a half years.

Google isn't just throwing money at this. They are a publicly traded company and cannot "Waste" stock owners money. They must have a VERY good business plan.

Spend anytime in Kansas City and you will see the ENORMOUS volume of construction crews working 24/7 for this fiber project.

I'm honestly mystified at silbaco's opinion of a slow roll out. I don't think any major Competitor could do it any quicker. It's certainly not any slower than Surewest's fiber deployment.

Billion?

"After buying the existing $39 billion iProvo network " Doesn't sound right. They could wire the entire country for that, or at least a large portion of it.

The connection charge should be free if a customer signs up for a year. Also, they should begin to taper the $300 fee elsewhere down to begin eliminating it altogether. As customers start paying their bills the network begins to turn profitable.

Can't wait until the NEXT city is announced.. please let it be in the northeast... apparently there isn't a much desire in the southwest for REAL broadband. Otherwise people would be tar & feathering their politicans to get something done.

I think they let you pay off the $300 in 12 monthly installments.

Free? I wonder how much is tacked on to the tax bill to continue paying down the $38,999,999 that's left on the bond after Google cuts it's check for the network. 'Course you have to pay that even if you don't want the service.

I wonder how good "today's basic speeds" are going to look in 7 years.

38-40 million dollars peanuts in a municipal budget. That's about 200 overpaid Senior level administrative positions of power like Police Chief, Superintendent of Schools, Supervisory council chiefs, etc. You'd be surprised how local government pads payroll and makes no excuses on how high paid these positions are compared to entry level workers making near minimum wage (guess which one gets cut to pay for the other?)

It is likely that google will bump the free tier to something faster than 5/1. I think in 2014, the new standard will be something closer to 10/2 as the MINIMUM definition of broadband.

Looking at the FY 2013 (just ended) Provo, UT budget; that is not 'peanuts.' In fact, it is really darn close to the budgeted revenue figure for the city -- $ 39,022,135.

Looking further in, it appears that the telecom debt service payments were expected to be right around $3,000,000. That's a bit more than $100 per household per year (based on Wikipedia's 2010 Census data for the city). Don't have any data on how long the bond will take to pay off (is it gone after the 7 years?).

Increase the free speed too much and people won't subscribe to the paid tier.

Would be better if there's cheaper option for Google Fiber.

$70 for 1 Gbps connection is such an amazing prize, but however, not everyone can afford to pay $70 just for internet. If they were making a lower tier, like 200 Mbps for $30, that will seriously kill all competition around the entire USA if Google plans to cover the entire USA.

Re: Would be better if there's cheaper option for Google Fiber.

Indeed, $70 is steep and 5/1 for free is too slow for an average family. But the project would probably never break even if it operated at $30 per month.
