Google Voice Now Available To Everyone
Well, at least everyone in the United States

We've discussed how Google Voice is the slightly-clunky beginning of a number of platforms that have some truly-game changing potential in the voice space. Google Voice (and the more elegant platforms that will follow) take away calling, voicemail and other platform mechanisms away from your phone company, potentially relegating them to their worst nightmare: a dumb pipe in an age where voice is just data and it's the other guy who develops profitable services.

Click for full size
Those who've yet to tinker with Google Voice but didn't get an invite now have a chance to figure out what the fuss is about if they head over to the Google Voice website. A post to the Google Voice blog notes that they've opened up the Google Voice platform to everybody (well, everybody in the United States):

A little over a year ago, we released an early preview of Google Voice, our web-based platform for managing your communications. We introduced one number to ring all your phones, voicemail that works like email, free calls and text messages to the U.S. and Canada, low-priced international calls and more—the only catch was you had to request and receive an invite to try it out. Today, after lots of testing and tweaking, we’re excited to open up Google Voice to the public, no invitation required.

Google's also offering up this video for those who still don't quite get what Google Voice does. After buying Grand Central in 2007 for $50 million, Google now says their service has one million users. Next up? Google's currently testing GMail integration that would incorporate desktop VoIP with Google Voice and GMail in a serious attempt to take on Skype.

I've had an account since the GrandCentral days

I've had an account since it was GrandCentral, and this service is quite useful.

Granted, there used to be frequent service issues, but I haven't experienced ANY issue in the past year.

Check the terms of service as to whether or not you can use this to get free calls- I know at least with T-Mobile MyFaves it is against the ToS to use something like this to get around using your general minutes.

I've had it since GC too, but i barely use it. Just have it as a show off number or when posting phone number on craigslist or unknown sites.

Re: I've had an account since the GrandCentral days

When i had TMO i used them as a Fav. I had 300 minutes per month and ended up with unlimted by making all my calls thru GV and all my calls coming into it.

But the topic on that is moot now due to Favs have gone away unless you stay on your calling plan that is more expensive than the prices now.

User beware

Before you go ahead and sign up multiple times thinking that you'll get a ton of free phone numbers, think again. Each GV number has to be linked to a physical phone number, and it cannot be another GV or Gizmo number. And don't think you can just assign your number to a new GV account and pull it back to your old one. Google is not that stupid. I had the experience of my real number got stuck with a second GV account, and I couldn't move it back to my original GV account as Google wanted a physical number. If this already happens to you, grab a skype-in number as your "temporary" physical phone number.

FYI.

No 603

No New Hampshire area code numbers though. Told my friends about it, but none of them could get 603 area codes (although, I was able to get one about 10 months ago when I got voice).

216 of Cleveland, OH is not available either. They're issuing 440 which are many other cities than CLE. But it all works though.

Awesome

This is awesome.

Have been using Google Voice for over a year now, and while it still needs a lot of work to become more user friendly has quickly become one of these things I can't live without.

I can now use any phone or device I want for voice and text messages no one has to know the difference. Also sending text messages for free if you have internet access anywhere in the world it's simply amazing.

Go Google!

But no intl sms

I wish they'd also offer international SMS.
They kinda do, as SMS to some countries do come through and work fine, but sometimes they don't, and lately this feature has been turned off for more carriers (attempt to send SMS to international number would get message that it's not successfully delivered)

Apparently Google doesn't know how to bill for it (I suppose it's "we don't know what's per-sms charge)

Yeah i used that feature all the time to text my wife for free in the Philippines. They shut it down June 1st without any warning. I'd be willing to pay if its cheaper than Verizons international texting, but sadly they didn't have a pay per ready to go. I use Skype now for that.

Re: But no intl sms

Paying international sms are coming.

It was possible to text for free to some places with Google overlooking that usage, but it got to a point were they had to stop it before a proper billing system is put in place.

They say that their international sms fees will 'very low'. We will see.

GV transcribing

Everyone, please submit your non-personal voice mails to Google to help "improve" their transcribing service. Currently, IMO, it sucks !

Yeah, I never got a transcribed voice mail that I could understand. And when a friend with a heavy foreign accent leaves a message, it gets hilarious.

They have a loooooong way to go.

I agree with this as well. The only reason I keep this feature active is I get a good laugh with every voice mail.

Other then this I really love Google Voice.

I turned off that feature the day they introduced it. yea it's super hilarious to see what it transcribes.

I've had this since it was grandcentral. I've never had issues with it at all, and it has an app that I use on my blackberry so i can make calls from the number on my phone.

i hate my gate to my phone once, but could never buzz anyone in (have to dial 9). there are key codes that google uses while on a call and it would never let me do anything, i kept recording the call at the gate tho lol

Sound Quality not up to par with landline

While I love the no-cost feature of domestic call with Google Voice, I have experienced choppy conversations in ~ 70% of my calls.

I certainly would not recommend the service as a primary business line due to the poor quality experiences.

Do you have a useful something to post, or just padding your count? Google locks you in for life on their services and gives you no out. There is no reason to make it that a person cannot cancel their "extras" if they do not want them.

nope tired it. That doens't work. I havent used my account in over a year now and the number doesn't show up in the control panel or locked to my cell phone anymore but I can use the actual number GV assigned me before Google took over.

Will not work that way. You cannot remove your "forwarding" phone number from the account. Only way, is to cancel your complete Google account, which has now been said and done.

Google Voice VoIp

I'm waiting for them to fully become a VoIp (Voice over IP) Services provider. Currently I have my Google Voice Number as my primary number.

Google Voice Number rings my VoIp.ms number & cell phone, but could never tell you what my cell of VoIp.ms number is, because I only give out Google Voice.

Love using it to block people, easy access voice mail, free text, e-mail updates, and hear if the message someone is leaving is really important (while they record it, just like the old days).

Magic Jack and Google Voice ( great partners !)

We use MagicJack here , however MJ has no local numbers in our area code , so I give friends and family my Google Voice # to call and that number is associated with my MagicJack phone. So my dad who lives 5 miles away gets no long distance charge on his home phone when he calls my local Google Voice number. Google Voice is an awesome service and I do not mind paying my $20 a year to Magic Jack.

"GOOGLE" - beware!

Be careful how much "in bed" you really want to get with Google apps.
This is a company turning to collecting info of any type about you and will sort it and sell it to anyone! Offering pictures of your property is one thing but collecting wi-fi info presumabily ip addresses as they are cruising by and probabily more info is outragious!

The public should protest these intrusions into your privacy by having nothing to do with Google apps except their search engine, maybe they will turn to other ways of making money than sell your privacy to the highest bidder.

GV>Gizmo5>Voip.ms

This integration is fantastic if you already have a G5 account of course. With the Voip.ms virtual SIP inbound DID for 25 cents per month and inbound calls are $.0002 per min outbound at .0125. You just have GV call G5, G5 sip forwards to your Voip.ms virtual number. I also set up a sub account for my smart phone(free) and a sip program running on the smartphone. If in a open wifi area inbound and outbound are all at that same rate just mentioned. All outgoing calls of course are spoofed to the Google Voice phone number. If not in a wifi area it would just ring the cell phone, home voip.ms phone. My smartphone was bought off of e-bay for about $50 and is a t-mobile prepay with no data plan averages about $8 per month, home phone about $3.00. This is my $11 per month Home and Smartphone plan. Others have done better but even a nub like me could get this up and running with a bit of fiddling. Now that Starbucks is going to have free wifi for everyone I am sure no one there will be impressed with me talking on my outdated smart phone...but they should be(umm I ment McDonalds).

Re: Dont get it

it's set so you can forward the GV number to more than just one number. So basically you turn it into your "home number" and it points to your house, your cell and any other number you want it to go to.

I use mine for my business. The number goes to my store, my home office and my cell phone. All without anyone knowing where I am at. Plus I can keep all of my private life separate from my work life due to not giving out my cell phone number.
