Google's Desktop VoIP Service Lifts Off
Company promoting service with university, airport phone booths
by Karl Bode Thursday 26-Aug-2010 tags: business · alternatives · VoIP
Google yesterday officially announced Gmail VoIP integration for Gmail, which allows users to call cell phones or landlines from within their Gmail contact list. Google says calls to the U.S. and Canada will be free "for at least the rest of the year," while calls to other countries are subject to these rates. "We’re rolling out this feature to U.S. based Gmail users over the next few days, so you’ll be ready to get started once "Call Phones" shows up in your chat list," says Google, who notes you'll have to install their voice and video plugin. To promote Google Voice, the company's going to begin installing British style (watch out for Daleks) phone booths in universities and airports.

Not necessariliy competitive international rates

Romania (both fixed and mobile) and Spain (mobile) are not competitive at all. Better off with CallWithUs or Future Nine (among others).

It all comes down to using the service that gives the best rates for the country you ALWAYS call. Most people using VOIP services like this call 1 country only. They use it to keep in touch with family back in the old country. But the Google rates are competitive in most situations for many countries.

Based on source of US immigrant groups:

the people making international calls will be from these top 4 countries.

Rate for Mexico City - $.02/min
Rate for China - $.02/min
Rate for Philippines - $.11/min
Rate for India - $.06/min

Mexico City metro - 21 million people.
Mexico 111 million people.
I suspect there would be many calls to Mexico City(about 20%)

Exactly - more than 80% of callers will be paying a whopping $0.10/ minute. I say more than 80% because most calls will orginate from the border region.
I guess there is a good reason why the richest man in the world is America Movil's (read Mexican telecom) Carlos Slim Helu.

that is also due to him getting in the prepaid phone business in the USA. He owns TracFone/Net Ten and does own straight talk. with a few others.

These rates are about 50-100% higher than other providers. Not competitive at all. The international voice market is full of people looking for best bang for the buck - so even a penny more will make a huge difference. Simply put- Google will only get business from people who don't realize they have alternatives. (granted- there are a lot of people like that)

Looking at those numbers, Google is not the absolute cheapest, but they are certainly competitive.

So what. I don't make international calls so I don't really care if they charge $23420348023948 a minute or they give it away for free.

Yea, well I work for a voice provider so that's probably not going to be much of a problem.

Good, but I & others will indeed want more

said by OldschoolDSL:

Google Voice would really make a loud "bang" in the digital world if they offered something outside the desktop.

I'd like to see them take on Vonage and other VoIp Provided. The majority of people do not want to be stuck / tied to their desktop to make a phone call.

Personally speaking... I already use my Google Voice Number is my primary number, because of the services it provides. I do not even remember what my real home or cell number is.
I quote myself, because it seemed to be the general thought in which many agreed with & I do not think I can say it any better.

I know we have a few Google employees who watch this site, so this is my call out to them.

Yes but then the cost would change. The service would most likely then fall under taxes. Plus Google voice would need to charge. Then it would not be free and for some the glow would vanish.

Google has already quoted that the service will remain free for the rest of the year... ie ... After it will cost.

Yes, every phone company charges tax. But its a small price I'd be willing to pay.

I'd like to see them offer VoIp and not just an app for cell phones, but VoIp for home phone use.

Google will NEVER deploy a standalone device to replace the "phone". Why you ask? It is because they will be FORCED to offer actual support. Google has already said time and time again they WILL NOT do this. Look at what happened to N1. They never offered support or anything else for a device that had as much issues it did changing networks.

Google is staying where it is at. This product will never go beyond what it is today.

Two separate things:

- Google Voice = »google.com/voice (not voip; not handcuffed to computer; gives a free phone # of your choice and many areas have #s offered; voicemails archived like emails, call forwarding to one or multiple #s, different ways to deal with incoming calls, etc. Newly out of invite-only mode)

- Gmail VoIP = »gmail.com/call (newer feature; voip; can integrate with Google Voice calls and account features)

As for myself, I only use a mobile phone and I have been using Google Voice for a long time now. Gmail VoIP is a nice addition to now have, since I don't have a home phone and I wasn't in need of one enough to pay for any VoIP bundles\products that I have seen out there before now.

I love Google, even if Buzz and a few other things were dumb.

standalone VoIP software like Skype?

Will google also release a standalone VoIP software like Skype?

Or will you always need to use your gmail account with a browser?

Well they already have google talk which is an application on its own.
Can't see how it would be too tough for them to integrate this into that.

Ooma already has a Google Voice extension for your GV VM, displaying your GV number on your Ooma line, and other features. The downside is that it costs $10 a month or $120 yearly. Closest thing I've seen so far.

that maybe the downside but at least with Ooma you get support. Google doesn't offer that.

Browser plugin

I am sick of addons for browsers. Why couldn't they just do this under Java or Flash? It's great they support Linux, but every plugin you install is a potential liability and there is nobody who can verify the security of this one. No thanks.

Funny you should mention that... because I downloaded the plugin last night from gmail, and spybot flagged it as casino.bellini on a WinXP laptop...

I'm sure its a false positive... but it effectively illustrates your point about the security risks associated with browser plugins.

I would even go so far as to say that there probably is something a little "stealthy" about it, although most folks will overlook it because of the free calls.

Re: Browser plugin

I am pretty sure it's a false positive. I was referring more to web exploits that could use the plugin as a vehicle of delivery, especially since it has to do with calling actual phone numbers, probably making an exploit potentially lucrative. Every plugin has that potential for exploitation, like most sets of code that were ever written. It has been illustrated with Flash too, hence why I have it and my browser sandboxed. Now that we have a new proprietary plugin(Gmail talk), you would need a profile to sandbox that. However, with it being new and proprietary, it can be hard for the community to make a sure-fire profile to contain every part of it without interfering with its operation. It can be done, but look how long it took for AppArmor to sandbox Flash(which it really does by sandboxing the entire browser as well as the plugin loader), as an example.

Google Voice

I'm tired of Canada being a second class country. There is absolutely no reason why they need to block Canadians from signing up... I'm not asking for a Canadian phone number, just to be able to access the service like an US person.

We never should have given back the Ohio Valley and Michigan and Washington State after the War of 1812. The British may have lost the war but we gained all the territory.

The service works fine from Canada, it works almost exactly like "Skype-Out" you just don't get an incoming number.

So it isn't like google voice in that sense but you get full functionality in Canada.

I only care for an app for this

Really, that's it. If there is no app that I can use this with then I don't care. I already pay for skype out (which worked great today while Google's VoIP didn't) and have free calls to canada and mexico.

BUT I don't want to be lugging my damn laptop across the countryside just to make a damn phone call to avoid ridiculous roaming.

yes, yes i am fully aware of buying prepaid sim cars.

Calling international

I currently use Google Voice to call Philippines. The rate is .17 per min. to cell. land line is .11; cell is the predominate phone service there.

The advantage is calling directly from computer and not ringing my cell. I'm hoping the call will be better.
Sometimes the call quality is not that good, however that might be in the Philippines side.

Who needs it anyways, First you have to open a Gmail account than download there plug-ins (more processors running in the back round) than you figure the first of the year (2011) they will start charging you a fee to use this service, not to mention Google tool bars and spyware that might be hidden, no thanks I will stick with my OOL Voip.
