Google's Project Fi Wireless Service No Longer Needs Invites

Google says that the company's Project Fi wireless service will no longer require invites starting today. The service leans heavily on Wi-Fi, but also utilizes the Sprint and T-Mobile networks when Wi-Fi isn't in range. Project Fi was announced a little more than a year ago, and since last summer has existed as largely an invite-only beta. The company has yet to specify just how many users have signed up for the service.

"We launched Project Fi as an invitation-only Early Access program to make sure we could deliver the best quality of service to our first customers," the company said in a blog post.

"Today, we’re excited to be exiting our invitation-only mode and opening up Project Fi so that people across the U.S. can now sign up for service without having to wait in-line for an invite."

For $20 a month users get unlimited talk, text, tethering and international roaming in 120+ countries. After that, it's a flat $10 per each additional gigabyte of GB for cellular data whether in the U.S. or abroad (read: $10 for 1 GB, $20 for 2 GB, or $30 for 3 GB) up to 10 GB per month. To spur interest, Google says it's offering its Nexus 5X smartphone for $200 for the next month if bought and activated through Project Fi.

Had Google Fi for about 6 mos; love it

Had Google Fi for about 6 mos and love it. Coverage in Philly Metro area has been great. Switching from WiFi to TMO(best coverage in Philly area vs Sprint) has been seamless. It isn't for everyone. If you are a HEAVY data user, you could cut a better deal straight with TMO. But my data usage off of WiFi always runs less than 1GB/mo. My avg monthly bill, incl taxes & FCC, runs about $23 to $24/mo. Test speeds are usually 20/12 mbps on TMO when off of Wifi. Moving to Fi from AT&T cut my monthly bill from about $60/mo down to $24/mo. Reliability in the home and on the road has been excellent. No dropped calls, or lost txts whether on WiFi or TMO LTE.

I love it

I've had Fi for nearly a year now and wouldn't switch for anything.
