Beefing up servers to handle heavy load...
02:01PM Friday Aug 14 2009 by Karl Bode

While the largest ISPs may be shying away from more than $7 billion broadband deployment funds, the NTIA and USDA have extended the deadline for the first round of funding in order to deal with "heavy volume," according to the agencies. According to a statement (pdf), capacity has ironically been a problem for the agency as it tries to handle grant requests. According to the government, they've "added additional servers to address these capacity issues," and any outfit with a grant already in the system will have their deadline for finishing it extended to August 20, 2009. If you've yet to start an application, you have until 5PM (EST) today.

Why would ANY of them want it?

This administration and congress has been INCREDIBLY unstable in many of the things they're trying to do... I think the BB providers saw what happened to the banks, even those not in trouble.. the government has been dealing a TON of mis-information and mis-trust with their programs.. they are half-assed, no one is reading these bills, there are lots of unknowns out there.. can anyone blame the ISPs for not wanting dirty money?

... who knows, maybe they also don't want a 7 billion dollar burden tossed back on them in the future.. remember, the govt has no money.. WE are the government. All money spent today has to come out of our pockets tomorrow, and the next day, year, decade, etc.

Right there, there is nothing detrimental in the industry that the big boys need to worry about as they are holding their own. The smaler players, I'm sure, are worried about being powned by the government and say no as well..

When is Queen Pelosi, Prince Reed, and the NWO President going to get it that he can keep his dirty money?

Additionally - they talk about this flood and rush of requests.. is that FUD? Are they, once again, inventing a crisis to create a need? There's a so-called health care crisis in America however, it only affects a small percentage of the population - EVERYTHING today is a crisis.. while I'll admit this country is not on the greatest of stable footings, WE THE PEOPLE can dig out of it and will SO LONG as the government keeps its nose to itself and stops trying to micro-manage everything.

I had SOME confidence in this administration going into it.. I don't want our leaders to fail as it only hurts us all.. but seriously, I have NEVER dis-trusted a single word from the government (which is now THEM vs US) as I ever have in my life..

Seems that every day they open their mouth and a lie falls out.

Companies, organizations, and state and local governments are eligible to apply in the first round.
While the major ISPs have not shown interest, I bet there are plenty of state & local gov'ts and some non-profit orgs looking to get on the gravy train.

Dirty money?

You think the government *now* is less trustworthy than it was before? You think the administration now is "creating a crisis" that doesn't exist? Do the phrases 'WMD' and 'Iraq' mean anything to you?

I guess what bothers you is the massive amount of oversight and thousands of auditors set up by the Obama administration over the TARP funds.

The health care crisis is partly a function of people paying 2 to 3 times as much as other countries for what amounts to worse healthcare on average. The crisis is also related to future projections of our national GDP being eaten alive by healthcare costs.

Re: Why would ANY of them want it?

Worse healthcare? Where do people go for relatively instant treatment using cutting-edge technology? The U.S.

Additionally, look at other countries. You might be paying 2-3x what they are for healthcare, but guess who can actually go to an ER and get problems fixed right away. That's right, the people who pay more in the U.S.

Re: Why would ANY of them want it?

@lanstix-

You really do not know anything about this topic. The U.S. pays substantially more for all of our healthcare and we are only 37th on the list of quality outcomes! There are many nations on this planet providing high quality care, and there are Americans going overseas to obtain new methods and better prices for their procedures.

It is time to stop thinking that this country's past glories are our current glories, because they aren't. We skated on our past reputation too long, lulled by political ads and ranting Fox network type airheads making careers off of our ignorance. We've thought our grandparents' and parents' successes were our own, but they weren't. We've dropped the ball!

I have friends and relatives in Canada, France, England, and Australia and not a one of them would trade their healthcare system for ours. They are amazed we've accepted it. Our French friends never even think about how they will pay for their healthcare, or how they will pay for their children's college educations, so they live with less stress in that regard as well! The French don't fight over private issues like abortion either, so there's another area of ongoing stress they manage to avoid.

I lived next to the Canadian border most of my life, but never met a Canadian who came over the border to obtain our healthcare over his or her own. In fact, I've never met a Canadian who complained about his or her healthcare system! Same with our British relatives.

We invented the internet, but now we have the slowest internet speeds in the world. The U.S. has slower speeds than backwater, poor countries with recent civil wars or wars with neighboring invaders they've survived!

Germany is kicking our butts over wind power, and other European countries as well as China have a leg up on us in alternative energy because they haven't been such sellouts to the oil industry.

Even scientists do not look to the U.S. as necessarily the best place to go to do research anymore because in addition to our many other problems, we descended into an anti-science mentality that interfered, giving other countries a leg up on competing against us. While we were fussing over who other people sleep with, marry, do to their bodies, and so on, other countries stepped into the vacuum created. Even our money is no longer considered the most valuable and the international finance world is turing away from us!

As for the world's immigrants all lined up to get into our country before all others, that's changed too. Yes, we still have immigrants, but the numbers changed during the George W. Bush years so the majority are not coming here anymore, but spreading out to other countries as their first choice, and that includes some of the best and the brightest. They don't all want to come here anymore, which is absolutely our loss since that was one of the aspects of our country that helped us reach our status of world leader as quickly as we did.

We manufacture very little anymore so we are nation of buyers not sellers, which means we've lost countless jobs.

The one area we have become more successful than all other nations, including repressive dictatorships, is in imprisoning more of our citizens than all the rest. Our criminal justice system industry and prison builders are doing very well for themselves.

So, child, read and learn something instead of spouting old bumper sticker statements, if only to protect your own future.

Most large ISPs will skip it ...

Say they take the money, as soon as they take it ... You
will have RIAA and the MPAA ... complaining about piracy ... An
then will try to force the ISP to monitor and filter traffic on their
part of the network. Then the government will have them
meter all the users.

Before you know what hit you ... you ISP will have to raise
the rates due to all this extra monitoring.

As far as I'm concerned they made the right choice not to
take the money ...

Re: Most large ISPs will skip it ...

Whereas the small ISPs are willing to serve rural areas with decent net neutrality provisions, because their employees actually have to use the connections they create.

I'm kinda happy that the bigwigs and their astroturfers are declining the cash. Leaves more for the little guys.
